Taxonomy & naming
Macrognathus fasciatus was described by Plamoottil and Abraham in 2014 from specimens collected in the Manimala River at Karuthavadasserikkara, Kerala, India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences — the governing authority for valid names) records it as a valid species in the genus Macrognathus, the Asian spiny eels, within the family Mastacembelidae and order Synbranchiformes. Its placement in Mastacembelidae is the key taxonomic fact: the fish is a spiny eel, not a true eel. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes and are only distantly related; the elongate, eel-like form of Macrognathus is a product of convergent evolution on a burrowing lifestyle, not of shared ancestry with marine or catadromous eels.
The genus Macrognathus encompasses the smaller Asian spiny eels — distinguished from the larger Mastacembelus by a somewhat shorter, more compressed body — and ranges across India, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, and parts of Sundaland. The species epithet fasciatus is Latin for 'banded' or 'striped', a direct reference to the conspicuous yellow vertical bands that run along the flanks. No previous combinations or synonyms are recorded for this recently described species.
Morphology
Macrognathus fasciatus reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 12 in according to FishBase, making it a medium-sized member of the genus. The body is greatly elongate and sinuous, scaleless to casual inspection, and covered with tiny embedded scales and a coat of protective mucus typical of the Mastacembelidae. A row of 28 to 30 short, isolated dorsal spines runs ahead of the long soft dorsal fin, which merges with the anal fin around the tapering tail — the 'spiny' characteristic that names the family. Dorsal soft-ray counts of 60 to 72 have been recorded.
The most striking colour feature is a series of 26 to 27 yellow vertical bands running down the lateral surface, with 8 to 9 whitish-yellow spots positioned between the adjacent band pairs. This banded pattern is the source of the specific epithet and distinguishes fasciatus from other Macrognathus species in the Indian subcontinent. The snout is drawn out into a fleshy, trunk-like proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, typical of the genus, used to probe sand and gravel for concealed prey. Females are likely broader in the body when ripe, though detailed sexual dimorphism data are sparse for this recently described species.
Habitat
Macrognathus fasciatus is known from the Manimala River in Kerala, a medium-sized river draining the southern Western Ghats to the Arabian Sea. Within this system it occupies demersal zones of slow to moderately flowing freshwater reaches, at depths recorded to 26 ft, over substrates of sand and sandy gravel with moderate to dense riparian vegetation. This combination of soft, loose substrate and abundant plant cover near the banks is typical of the genus, providing both burrowing opportunities and nocturnal foraging habitat among roots and leaf litter.
The Manimala River is a tropical lowland river, warm year-round, and the species is expected to experience the monsoonal flooding that drives seasonal breeding in Macrognathus across southern Asia. Water chemistry in the riverine habitats of Kerala's lowland reaches is generally warm and soft to near-neutral, influenced by the laterite soils and dense vegetation of the catchment. Like all Mastacembelidae, fasciatus is sensitive to the scaleless skin's vulnerability to copper-containing medications, poor water quality, and abrupt parameter swings.
Feeding
Macrognathus fasciatus is a nocturnal benthic predator in the Mastacembelidae mould, using the sensitive, probing snout to root through sand and sandy gravel in search of concealed invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and similar benthic prey. Feeding takes place primarily after dark, when the fish emerges from the substrate to work the riverbed and margins.
In the aquarium, related Macrognathus species accept a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, earthworms, tubifex, and similar meaty items offered in the evening. Feeding at or after lights-out is advisable because newly imported spiny eels are often reluctant to emerge and feed while visible. High-quality sinking pelleted foods may be accepted once the fish is settled, but fresh and frozen invertebrates form the core of a good diet.
Mating
Macrognathus fasciatus is a spiny eel and spawns as a substrate egg-scatterer in fresh water — it is not a true eel and undertakes no sea-going migration. Spawning in the genus is understood to be triggered by the onset of the monsoon rains, when rising water levels, increased current, and the flooding of marginal vegetation provide the environmental cues that bring adults into breeding condition. Courting pairs of related Macrognathus species have been observed circling and entwining among fine vegetation before scattering adhesive eggs.
There is no nest construction and no lasting pair bond. The eggs are left to develop among plant stems, roots, or leaf litter without adult attendance. Specific courtship observations for M. fasciatus have not been published, and most understanding of its likely behaviour is inferred from close congeners.
Breeding
As a Mastacembelid spiny eel, Macrognathus fasciatus is an egg-scatterer in fresh water, depositing adhesive eggs among fine vegetation or submerged roots, with no parental care from either parent after spawning. This is the standard Mastacembelidae reproductive mode and stands apart from both the bubble-nest guarding of the swamp eels (Synbranchidae) and the semelparous, catadromous sea migration of true eels (Anguillidae). Breeding in the wild is almost certainly tied to the monsoon season, with the flooding of riparian margins and temperature increases serving as the proximate spawning cues.
Macrognathus fasciatus has not been reported as bred in captivity, and its congeners are only rarely spawned in the aquarium. The combination of a restricted known range, a 2014 description date, and sparse trade presence means that essentially all aquarium knowledge of the species would need to be extrapolated from closely related species such as Macrognathus zebrinus. A large, mature, soft-substrate aquarium with rainfall-simulation water changes and a seasonally adjusted temperature drop would represent the starting point for any serious captive breeding attempt.
In the aquarium
Macrognathus fasciatus is a very rare fish in the aquarium trade, and most hobbyists are unlikely to encounter it outside of specialist importers dealing in Indian subcontinent oddities. As with its congeners, any specimen obtained would require a soft sand substrate deep enough to permit burrowing, ample cover in the form of clay pipes, smooth rocks, and dense plantings, and a fully sealed, escape-proof lid — spiny eels are notorious escape artists that can squeeze through the smallest gap, and will die on the floor if given the opportunity.
The fish is scaleless and acutely sensitive to copper-based medications, so the aquarium must be copper-free and any disease treatment chosen with care. It is nocturnal, retiring by day and active after dark, and should be fed meaty foods — worms, bloodworm, crustaceans — in the evening. At a maximum of around 12 in it is manageable in a well-filtered tank of moderate size, but it needs calm, non-competitive tankmates that will not claim food before the eel emerges at night. Given appropriate care it is likely a long-lived fish, as is typical of the Mastacembelidae.
Conservation
Macrognathus fasciatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2014 and its known range is currently restricted to the Manimala River in Kerala, India — a single river catchment. This narrow documented distribution, combined with the limited time that has elapsed since description and the scarcity of population data, means a formal assessment has not yet been completed.
The Manimala River, like many rivers of the Kerala lowlands, faces pressure from agriculture, sand extraction, damming, and riparian habitat degradation that have reduced the quality and continuity of the soft-substrate, vegetated reaches that spiny eels require. Endemic single-river species are inherently vulnerable to localised threats, and the absence of an IUCN evaluation does not imply that the species is secure. Field surveys to establish its full range within Kerala river systems and to document population status would be a necessary first step toward a conservation assessment.
