Macrognathus aureus is a small, recently described spiny eel endemic to the upper Ayeyarwaddy River drainage of northern Myanmar, known only from Lake Indawgyi and a single hill stream in Kachin State. Despite its common trade name and sinuous build, it is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels of the order Synbranchiformes, a group far more closely related to the swamp eels than to the marine and catadromous true eels of the order Anguilliformes. Its elongate form is convergent, an adaptation to a burrowing life in shallow freshwater habitats. Described formally by Ralf Britz in 2010, M. aureus is distinguished from its relatives by a striking pattern of large white-rimmed dark-brown to black blotches and a specific count of rostral tooth plates and dorsal-fin spines.

Taxonomy & naming

Macrognathus aureus was described by the German ichthyologist Ralf Britz in 2010, published in Zootaxa (volume 2514), based on specimens collected from the upper Ayeyarwaddy River drainage in Kachin State, northern Myanmar. The type locality is Lake Indawgyi and an unnamed hill stream south of Mogaung. The species belongs to the M. aculeatus species group within the genus Macrognathus, the Asian spiny eels, which is placed in the family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes.

The genus Macrognathus is the principal genus of Asian spiny eels alongside Mastacembelus, and both sit within Mastacembelidae — a family that is not related to the true eels (Anguilliformes) despite sharing their elongate body plan. The eel-like shape in Mastacembelidae is a convergent adaptation to a burrowing lifestyle in freshwater substrate, not evidence of shared ancestry with marine or catadromous eels. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid names; M. aureus has not been subject to subsequent taxonomic revision.

The species epithet aureus is Latin for 'golden', though the specific application to this species — whether referring to a golden tint in live coloration or simply a descriptive flourish — is not elaborated in the original description. Distinguishing characters from congeners include 8–10 rostral tooth plates, 21–22 dorsal-fin spines, and the distinctive blotch pattern.

Morphology

Macrognathus aureus is a moderately sized spiny eel, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 8.5 in. The body is elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, with a scaleless appearance owing to tiny embedded scales overlaid with a mucous coat. The snout is drawn into the characteristic fleshy rostral proboscis of the genus, tipped with tubular nostrils used to probe the substrate for prey.

Along the dorsal surface runs a series of short, isolated spines — the 'spiny' of spiny eel, numbering 21–22 in this species — ahead of the soft dorsal fin, which merges with the anal fin around the pointed tail tip. The defining feature of M. aureus is its color pattern: large white-rimmed dark-brown to black blotches distributed along the flanks, a marking that separates it visually from the spotted or striped patterns of its closest relatives in the M. aculeatus group. As in most Macrognathus, the sexes are externally similar, though ripe females are expected to be noticeably more robust around the abdomen.

Habitat

The known range of Macrognathus aureus is restricted to northern Myanmar — specifically Lake Indawgyi, a large shallow lake in Kachin State, and at least one hill stream south of Mogaung in the same upper Ayeyarwaddy drainage. Lake Indawgyi is the largest inland lake in Myanmar and sits at approximately 509 ft above sea level, drained by the Indaw River into the upper Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwaddy) system.

As a Mastacembelid in a lowland-to-hill-stream setting in tropical Southeast Asia, M. aureus almost certainly inhabits warm, soft to neutral freshwater, burrowing into soft sandy or muddy substrate along lake margins, stream beds and vegetated shallows. The hill-stream locality implies it can tolerate somewhat faster, clearer water than purely lacustrine congeners. Specific temperature, pH and hardness data have not been formally documented for this species; aquarium care parameters for this species are extrapolated from closely related Macrognathus.

Feeding

Like other members of the genus, Macrognathus aureus is a nocturnal carnivore. The genus as a whole uses the sensitive, probing rostral organ to detect benthic invertebrates hidden in substrate — insect larvae, small worms and crustaceans are the typical prey. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.3 for M. aureus, placing it as an intermediate carnivore consistent with this invertebrate-dominated diet, with occasional small fish taken opportunistically.

In the aquarium, congeners such as M. aculeatus and M. zebrinus are fed bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms and other soft-bodied live or frozen invertebrates. M. aureus would be expected to share these preferences. Feeding is best offered after lights-out when the fish is naturally active; newly acquired specimens may be reluctant to feed in bright conditions or while observed.

Mating

Macrognathus aureus is a spiny eel, and spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners that scatter adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation, roots or leaf litter and provide no parental care beyond the act of spawning. This is not the breeding mode of the catadromous true eels, which migrate to sea to spawn once and die; M. aureus is strictly a freshwater breeder throughout its life cycle.

Spawning in Macrognathus species is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature, the onset of rains, or an influx of soft, slightly cooler water — mimicking monsoon conditions in their native range. A courting pair entwine and press together among vegetation before scattering small adhesive eggs. There is no nest construction, no guard behavior and no pair bond sustained after spawning. Specific mating observations for M. aureus are not documented in the literature.

Breeding

As a spiny eel, Macrognathus aureus scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots or bottom debris in fresh water, with no parental care given to either eggs or larvae. Eggs hatch within a few days in warm water, and the larvae are tiny, requiring infusoria-grade or very fine foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. This mode — egg-scattering in fresh water, no parental care, rain or flood-season triggered — is consistent across the Mastacembelidae and differs entirely from the once-in-a-lifetime marine spawning migration of the true eels.

Macrognathus aureus is not reported as bred in the home aquarium. Its restricted and poorly studied range, recent description date (2010), and the general rarity of captive Mastacembelid spawnings together mean that virtually no captive breeding data exist. Any aquarium-kept specimens are almost certainly wild-caught. Best practice for encouraging spawning in related Macrognathus species involves large water changes with soft, slightly cooler water, a mature planted set-up, and conditioning the pair on varied live and frozen foods.

In the aquarium

Macrognathus aureus is an uncommon species in the aquarium trade, owing to its restricted endemic range in northern Myanmar. Its husbandry requirements are consistent with other small to mid-sized Macrognathus: a soft sand substrate deep enough to allow burrowing, caves, driftwood and shaded retreats, a tight-fitting and fully sealed lid (spiny eels are notorious escape artists that can squeeze through minimal gaps and will leave an open tank), and excellent, stable water quality.

As a scaleless fish, M. aureus is sensitive to copper-based medications and should not be treated with standard ich remedies containing copper; salt-based or heat treatments are safer options. It is a nocturnal carnivore and should be fed live or frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, tubifex, small earthworm — in the evening. Its modest adult size of around 8.5 in SL makes it suitable for smaller aquaria than the large spiny eels, but it still requires a well-filtered, mature tank and will not thrive with fast or aggressive tankmates that outcompete it for food. Water parameters extrapolated from congeners suggest 72–82 °F and soft to neutral pH; sharp fluctuations and poor water quality should be avoided.

Conservation

Macrognathus aureus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated. This reflects its recent description (2010) and the limited time for conservation assessment, rather than any evidence that the species is secure. Its known range is highly restricted — confined to Lake Indawgyi and one hill stream in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — which makes it inherently vulnerable to any localised threats.

Lake Indawgyi is recognized as an important biodiversity site and is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, which affords some degree of habitat protection. However, pressures including agricultural runoff, artisanal fishing, and water-level modification in the catchment are present. The species has not been formally monitored, and its population status is unknown. Given the narrow endemic range, a formal IUCN assessment would likely result in a threatened or Data Deficient listing. The aquarium trade impact on wild populations is unknown, and collection for export is plausible given hobbyist interest in unusual Macrognathus species.
