Taxonomy & naming
Macrognathus caudiocellatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1893 — the parenthetical authority notation indicating the species has since been transferred to a different genus from the one Boulenger originally placed it in. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) accepts the combination Macrognathus caudiocellatus, placing it within the genus Macrognathus, which groups the spotted and half-banded spiny eels of South and Southeast Asia within the family Mastacembelidae.
Mastacembelidae sits within the order Synbranchiformes — the same order that contains the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). This is the key taxonomic fact: spiny eels are not true eels at all. The true eels belong to the Anguilliformes, a wholly different lineage with a dramatically different life history. The eel-like shape of Macrognathus caudiocellatus is convergent, the result of selection for a burrowing, elongate body plan in benthic freshwater habitats, not shared ancestry with Anguilla or any marine eel.
The species epithet caudiocellatus derives from the Latin cauda (tail) and ocellatus (spotted, from ocellus, a little eye), referring to an ocellated or eye-spot marking near the tail base that is characteristic of the species and distinguishes it from related Macrognathus of the region.
Morphology
Macrognathus caudiocellatus is a small member of its genus, reaching approximately 8–10 in in total length. Like all spiny eels the body is greatly elongated and laterally compressed toward the rear, with the dorsal and anal fins running as long, low fringes that merge around the tapered tail. The snout is drawn out into the fleshy, probing rostrum characteristic of Macrognathus, tipped with short tubular nostrils used to investigate the substrate. A row of short, isolated dorsal spines precedes the soft dorsal fin — the feature that gives the family its common name.
The ground colour is brownish to olive with darker mottling or banding on the flanks, and the tail region bears the ocellated spot (or spots) referenced in the species name. Aquarium observations note two apparent phenotypes: larger, darker individuals and smaller, brownish ones — an external difference that may correspond to sex, though this has not been formally confirmed. Like all mastacembelids the body is functionally scaleless to the eye, covered instead in tiny embedded scales and a thick mucus coat that makes the fish slippery and offers some protection but renders it highly sensitive to copper and other chemical irritants.
Habitat
Macrognathus caudiocellatus is endemic to the Inle Lake basin in Shan State, Myanmar, within the Salween River drainage. Inle Lake is a shallow, highland freshwater lake sitting at approximately 2887 ft elevation, notable for its floating gardens (the Intha people's cheraw cultivation system), extensive reed beds, and a community of highly endemic fishes, birds, and invertebrates. Of the 31 fish species recorded from Inle, 16 are endemic — an extraordinary concentration of local biodiversity in a geologically and hydrologically isolated basin.
The species inhabits the lake's marginal shallows and associated wetland channels, where it buries in soft sediment and shelters among aquatic vegetation and roots. Water conditions in Inle Lake reflect a highland environment: the water is typically medium-hard to moderately hard and slightly alkaline, differing from the soft, acidic lowland rivers that many Southeast Asian mastacembelids prefer. Temperature ranges are moderated by elevation. During a 2016–2020 ichthyological survey conducted across four seasons, only two specimens were collected, from the Hopong Town area, confirming the species' rarity within what is already a small and isolated range.
Feeding
Macrognathus caudiocellatus is a carnivore in the manner of all spiny eels, hunting benthic invertebrates along the substrate using its sensitive, probing snout. In the wild its diet likely consists of small insect larvae, crustaceans, worms and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates found among the reed roots, soft sediment and organic debris of Inle Lake's littoral zone.
In the aquarium, members of the genus Macrognathus accept live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: bloodworm, brine shrimp, earthworm pieces, and blackworms are all suitable. Like most spiny eels, M. caudiocellatus is nocturnal and will feed most actively in the evening or after lights-out. New arrivals can be reluctant feeders in unfamiliar settings; small live foods offered in dim conditions usually help the fish settle. Dry or pellet foods may be accepted eventually by acclimatised individuals but are not the natural preference.
Mating
Spiny eels are egg-scattering spawners that provide no parental care, and Macrognathus caudiocellatus follows this pattern. It is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine or long-distance spawning migration; breeding occurs in fresh water within or near its home habitat. Aquarium Glaser records that spawning takes place among floating plant roots near the water surface, consistent with observations of other small Macrognathus in the hobby where courtship involves the male actively pursuing and nudging the female before the pair entwine to release adhesive eggs among vegetation.
In the wild, spawning is probably triggered by seasonal changes — shifting water levels, temperature fluctuations, or increased rainfall associated with the monsoon — that signal the beginning of a productive wet season. Reliable field observations are lacking given the species' rarity and the difficulty of studying nocturnal fish in a turbid lake environment, so most inferences about mating behaviour rest on the generalised Macrognathus pattern and limited aquarium accounts.
Breeding
Like the majority of spiny eels, Macrognathus caudiocellatus is rarely bred in the home aquarium. Reports from Aquarium Glaser note that spawning among floating plant roots is possible in captivity, making it somewhat more tractable than the largest mastacembelids that require enormous tanks, but successful rearing to adulthood remains uncommon. Eggs are adhesive and scattered among plant material near the surface; no parental care is given and the adults may be removed after spawning to protect the eggs.
Where aquarium hobbyists have succeeded in spawning related small Macrognathus, the trigger has typically involved a shift to slightly softer or cooler water mimicking the onset of the rainy season, combined with fine-leaved floating plants or spawning mops for egg deposition. The larvae are minute on hatching and require infusoria-grade live foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Commercial or specialist breeding of this species specifically is not reported in the available literature; most or all specimens in the trade, if they appear at all, will be wild-collected from Inle Lake — a concern given the fish's documented rarity.
In the aquarium
Macrognathus caudiocellatus is occasionally encountered in the ornamental trade as a Burmese or Myanmar spiny eel, though its Inle Lake endemism and documented rarity in recent surveys make it a species that demands careful consideration before purchase. Its small adult size — around 8 in — means it is physically manageable in a modest aquarium of 20 US gal or more, but the tank must provide what all spiny eels require: a deep bed of fine, soft sand for burrowing, ample caves, pipes and shaded retreats, and above all a completely sealed, escape-proof lid. Spiny eels are relentless escape artists, able to squeeze through the smallest gaps, breathe at the surface, and travel considerable distances out of water before desiccating.
Water conditions should reflect the species' highland lake origin — medium-hard, slightly alkaline, well-oxygenated water at around 72–79 °F rather than the warm, soft, acidic water suited to lowland Indo-Malayan spiny eels. The scaleless body is sensitive to copper-based medications and poor water quality; a mature, stable filter and careful husbandry are essential. The species appears to be relatively peaceful toward conspecifics and similarly sized tankmates but will prey on very small fish or invertebrates. Evening feeds of live or frozen invertebrates should be offered, and tankmates should be robust enough to hold their own without out-competing the eel at feeding time.
Given the species' very restricted wild range and the pressure its population faces, hobbyists acquiring M. caudiocellatus carry an implicit responsibility: long-term care, not impulse purchases, and ideally supporting or encouraging any captive-breeding effort to reduce reliance on wild collection.
Conservation
Macrognathus caudiocellatus has no current IUCN Red List assessment, but the evidence assembled from recent field surveys points clearly toward a species under serious pressure. A 2016–2020 systematic survey of Inle Lake's fish fauna, conducted across multiple seasons and sites, yielded only two specimens — among the lowest abundance figures of any fish recorded — and the authors noted that endemic species in the lake require urgent conservation attention.
Inle Lake itself is in ecological decline. Decades of intensive agricultural activity on its catchment, including widespread use of agrochemicals and pesticides that drain directly into the lake, have degraded water quality and reduced the health of the lake's shallow-water habitats. Sedimentation from the catchment continues to fill the lake. Most critically, the introduction and explosive proliferation of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) has devastated the endemic fish community: tilapia outcompete native species for food and habitat and in some parts of the lake have essentially replaced the endemic fauna. This is the pattern that has collapsed endemic lake fish communities around the world, and Inle Lake is now living through it.
For a species confined to a single, geographically tiny lake that is undergoing rapid environmental change, the combination of a naturally small range and multiple stacking threats places M. caudiocellatus in a precarious position. A formal reassessment and targeted endemic-fish conservation programme for Inle Lake are overdue.
