Macrognathus circumcinctus, the belted spiny eel, is a slender, banded fish of the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia — a compact member of the family Mastacembelidae that is small enough for a community aquarium yet carries all the distinctive habits of the spiny-eel clan. Despite both its common name and its sinuous profile it is not a true eel at all: it belongs to the order Synbranchiformes, kin to the swamp eels rather than to the marine and catadromous Anguilliformes, and its elongate shape is a convergent adaptation for life in substrate and dense vegetation. The species was described by Hora in 1924 from Peninsular Siam and ranges today from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of Thailand through the Malay Peninsula into Sumatra — a nocturnal, burrowing predator that wears a series of dark encircling bands across a pale or ochre body.

Taxonomy & naming

Macrognathus circumcinctus was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1924 as Mastacembelus circumcinctus, based on material from the Talé Sap (a large shallow lake in Peninsular Siam, present-day Thailand), in his account of fishes collected during a tour of the Far East. The species has since been transferred to Macrognathus, a genus distinguished from Mastacembelus largely by details of dentition and the form of the preopercular spine, and the current accepted name recorded in GBIF and used in recent literature is Macrognathus circumcinctus (Hora, 1924) — the parenthetical authority indicating the genus has changed from the original description.

Macrognathus and Mastacembelus together form the core of the family Mastacembelidae, the spiny eels, which are placed in the order Synbranchiformes alongside the swamp eels (Synbranchidae). That placement makes the relationship plain: the spiny eels are far more closely related to the air-breathing Monopterus and its kin than to the true eels of the order Anguilliformes. The eel-like body of M. circumcinctus is a case of convergent evolution suited to burrowing and threading through dense substrate — not evidence of kinship with marine eels.

Morphology

Macrognathus circumcinctus is a small to medium spiny eel, typically reaching 3.5–5 in in standard length in the aquarium, with an exceptional record of around 11 in total length reported in at least one source. The body is greatly elongated and laterally compressed toward the tail, scaleless in appearance (small embedded scales are present beneath a heavy mucus coat), and tapers to a pointed caudal region where the dorsal and anal fins merge. Along the back runs a row of short, isolated dorsal spines — the defining feature of the family — ahead of the soft dorsal fin. The snout is produced into a fleshy, probing proboscis with tubular nostrils used to detect prey in substrate.

The common name "belted spiny eel" refers to the most conspicuous feature of the patterning: a series of dark brown to black bands or saddles that encircle the head and body, giving the fish a striped or banded appearance quite unlike the longitudinal striping of many of its relatives. The background colour is pale tan to ochre. Sexes are externally similar; ripe females may appear fuller-bodied, but reliable sexing outside of that is not practical.

Habitat

The belted spiny eel is native to the freshwater lowland systems of mainland and insular Southeast Asia. It occurs in the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of Thailand, throughout the Malay Peninsula (including Malaysia), and on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Within these systems it occupies slow-moving to moderately flowing rivers, streams, and associated floodplain habitats with sandy or soft substrates and abundant shelter in the form of roots, leaf litter, and submerged vegetation.

Water conditions across this range are warm and soft to moderately hard, broadly neutral: FishBase records a temperature range of 75–81 °F (with aquarium guides extending that to roughly 80–85 °F under maintained conditions) and a pH range of 6.4–8.3, reflecting the variety of lowland habitats the species can occupy. At least one care guide notes a preference for areas with moderate water movement and shaded cover. Like all Mastacembelidae, M. circumcinctus is scaleless and sensitive to copper and to deteriorating water quality.

Feeding

Macrognathus circumcinctus is a carnivore that forages primarily by probing the substrate and among plant stems with its sensitive fleshy snout. In nature it takes benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small worms, crustaceans and similar prey — detected by touch and chemical cues rather than sight. Ambush predation is also recorded, with the fish remaining still among cover and striking at passing prey.

In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet of insect-based dry and gel foods, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and similar invertebrates, and live offerings such as earthworms and small aquatic invertebrates. Feeding in the evening or after lights are dimmed aligns with its nocturnal activity pattern and generally produces better results than daytime feeding, particularly for newly acquired specimens still adjusting to captivity.

Mating

As a member of the Mastacembelidae, Macrognathus circumcinctus is an egg-scattering spawner that provides no parental care — the biology that applies to spiny eels as a group, distinct from the bubble-nest guarding of swamp eels (Monopterus) or the semelparous ocean migration of true eels (Anguilla). Spawning in the wild is likely triggered by seasonal environmental cues, particularly the onset of monsoon rains and associated rises in water level and temperature that flood marginal vegetation and shallow banks where eggs can be scattered.

No published detailed accounts of courtship in this species are available. By analogy with related Macrognathus species, the pair likely entwine and move together through fine vegetation or root mats during spawning, scattering adhesive eggs that attach to plant surfaces or settle into the substrate. There is no nest-building, no pair bond that persists beyond spawning, and no adult attendance of the eggs or larvae.

Breeding

There are no published breeding records for Macrognathus circumcinctus in the home aquarium, and the species appears to be rarely if ever bred in captivity at the hobbyist level. This is in keeping with spiny eels generally: substrate egg-scatterers that require carefully mimicked seasonal conditions, sufficiently mature and compatible adults, and appropriate fine-leaved vegetation or equivalent substrate for egg deposition.

Where breeding is attempted with related small Macrognathus species, a period of conditioning on varied meaty foods followed by a larger water change with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate the transition toward the wet season is the standard approach. Eggs are small and adhesive; hatching takes a few days at tropical temperatures, and the larvae require very fine live foods before they can accept larger items. Because captive breeding is so uncommon, virtually all M. circumcinctus in the aquarium trade are wild-caught or commercially pond-raised rather than tank-bred.

In the aquarium

The belted spiny eel is one of the more aquarium-practical spiny eels by virtue of its modest adult size — at 3.5–5 in in standard length it can be housed in a well-planted aquarium of moderate dimensions, unlike the large Mastacembelus species that demand tanks measuring two metres or more. It does still require the hallmarks of good spiny-eel husbandry: a soft sand substrate deep enough to allow burrowing, caves and hiding places, dense planting or other cover, subdued lighting, and a tight-fitting, sealed lid. Spiny eels are notorious escape artists that climb silently out of any gap, breathe at the surface, and perish on the floor — a secure cover is non-negotiable.

Temperament is reported to be variable: some individuals are tolerant of conspecifics and of peaceful community tankmates, while others prove territorial or aggressive; caution is warranted when mixing with very small fish that could be taken as prey. The species is sensitive to copper in any form and to salt concentrations above a low brackish level, so medications must be chosen carefully and the system kept well filtered and stable. Water parameters should be maintained within the species' natural range — warm (roughly 75–84 °F), soft to moderately hard, and broadly neutral pH. Evening feeding with meaty invertebrate foods suits the fish's nocturnal habits.

Conservation

Macrognathus circumcinctus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species' range spans several countries across Southeast Asia — Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia (Sumatra) — and it occupies a variety of lowland freshwater habitats, which may confer some resilience compared with narrow-range endemics.

Nonetheless, the lowland river systems of the Mekong basin, the Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra face well-documented pressures including damming, intensive land conversion for agriculture, sedimentation, pollution from pesticide runoff, and continued collection for the ornamental fish trade. Deforestation in Sumatra and peninsular Malaysia in particular has altered many stream systems that support species such as this. Until a formal assessment is carried out, the conservation status of M. circumcinctus remains unknown, and monitoring of wild populations in conjunction with developing captive-bred supply chains would benefit both the species and the hobby.
