Taxonomy & naming
Macrognathus aculeatus was first described by the German-Russian naturalist Marcus Eliezer Bloch in 1786, making it one of the earliest-described spiny eels from Asia. The specific epithet aculeatus is Latin for 'prickly' or 'spined', a reference to the row of short isolated dorsal spines that characterise the spiny eels as a group. The original combination placed the fish in a broad Linnaean genus that was later refined, and it was at various points treated as Mastacembelus aculeatus before being restored to Macrognathus — the genus that groups the smaller, more slender Asian spiny eels distinguishable from the heavier-bodied Mastacembelus by proportional features and the arrangement of dorsal spines.
The family Mastacembelidae sits within the order Synbranchiformes, the same order as the swamp eels (family Synbranchidae). These fishes are thus not closely related to the true eels, which are the Anguilliformes — a wholly separate and distant lineage of mostly marine and catadromous fishes. The elongate, scaleless body of a spiny eel is a convergent adaptation to burrowing rather than evidence of shared ancestry with Anguilla. Macrognathus contains roughly fifteen recognised species of small to medium Asian spiny eels, of which M. aculeatus is the most widely distributed and the type most frequently encountered in the ornamental fish trade.
Morphology
Macrognathus aculeatus is a moderately sized spiny eel, reaching around 12–15.5 in standard length (and up to approximately 19.5 in total length) at full size, making it substantially smaller than the large Asian species such as Mastacembelus erythrotaenia or M. armatus. The body is greatly elongate, laterally compressed toward the tail, and appears scaleless to the eye; in common with all mastacembelids the scales are tiny and embedded, and the body is coated in protective mucus. The snout is produced into a short, fleshy proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, used to probe the substrate for prey.
A row of short, isolated spines runs along the dorsal midline ahead of the soft dorsal fin — the hallmark of the family. The most distinctive marking of M. aculeatus is a series of dark-edged ocelli ('eye-spots') along the base of the dorsal fin, often described as peacock spots; the flank ground colour is tan to olive-brown, typically with a longitudinal dark stripe or series of blotches. The fins are often edged in darker pigment. Ripe females become noticeably fuller in the body, but the sexes are otherwise difficult to distinguish externally.
Habitat
Macrognathus aculeatus is native to the freshwater lowlands of mainland and insular Southeast Asia, with records from Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra and Java. It is a fish of slow to moderately flowing lowland rivers, floodplain channels, swamps and seasonally inundated ground, preferring soft substrates — sand, mud and leaf litter — into which it can burrow. By day it lies concealed in the substrate or wedged beneath submerged roots and debris, often with only the head exposed.
The species inhabits warm, soft to neutral water — temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F and a pH broadly around 6.0–7.0 — consistent with the lowland equatorial climate of its range. It is associated with still or slow water bodies, paddies and drainage channels as much as with flowing rivers, and its tolerance of turbid, organically rich environments makes it a common fish in heavily modified lowland landscapes across Southeast Asia. Like all mastacembelids it is scaleless and therefore more sensitive to deteriorating water quality than scaled species of equivalent size.
Feeding
Macrognathus aculeatus is a nocturnal carnivore and insectivore. In the wild it forages after dark over and within soft substrates, using the sensitive fleshy snout to detect benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and aquatic insects — which it extracts from the sediment or leaf litter with a probing, rooting action. Small fish may also be taken opportunistically.
In the aquarium, bloodworm, tubifex, small earthworms and similar invertebrate foods form the dietary core. Many individuals accept frozen bloodworm and other frozen invertebrates readily, and some learn to take sinking carnivore pellets in time. Feeding should be timed for the evening or after lights-out, when the fish is naturally active; it is a poor competitor for food in bright, busy community tanks where faster-moving species take first pick.
Mating
Like other mastacembelid spiny eels, Macrognathus aculeatus is a substrate egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. It is not a true eel and does not migrate to sea to breed; spawning takes place entirely in fresh water. Spawning is believed to be triggered by rising water temperatures and increased water levels associated with the seasonal rains, when adults in the wild move onto flooded marginal ground rich in aquatic vegetation and roots.
A courting pair entwine among plants or submerged vegetation before scattering small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots or leaf litter. There is no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and the adults take no further interest in the eggs. Wild-state courtship and mating are poorly documented, as the fish is nocturnal, lives in turbid water, and spawns in shallow, vegetated margins difficult to observe.
Breeding
Macrognathus aculeatus is rarely bred in the home aquarium, and most specimens in the ornamental trade are wild-caught or commercially pond-raised rather than captive-bred. Triggering spawning requires a well-established, mature set-up with fine-leaved plants, roots or spawning mops, a soft sand bed, and the simulation of seasonal change — typically a prolonged period of slightly cooler, lower water followed by warm partial water changes to mimic the onset of rains.
When spawning occurs, the pair scatter adhesive eggs among vegetation; the eggs hatch within a few days. The tiny larvae require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial fry foods of equivalent particle size — before they are large enough to accept newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care is given at any stage, and in the absence of separating the adults the eggs may be eaten. Successful captive rearing remains uncommon outside specialist breeding operations; the species is not available as captive-bred stock in the mainstream trade.
In the aquarium
Macrognathus aculeatus is one of the more manageable spiny eels for the home aquarium by virtue of its modest adult size — 12–15.5 in rather than the metre or more reached by the large Asian species — but it demands the same core conditions as its larger relatives. A soft sand substrate deep enough for burrowing is essential; it will not thrive long-term over coarse gravel. Plenty of hiding places — caves, PVC pipes, dense planting, tangles of driftwood — should be provided so the fish can retreat during the day. Dim lighting and a predictable feeding schedule aid acclimatisation.
The most important requirement is a fully sealed, tight-fitting lid. Spiny eels are accomplished escape artists: they climb sponge filters, push through foam seals, and squeeze through any gap large enough to admit the snout, and they die rapidly once out of water. An unsecured tank will eventually mean a dead eel on the floor. The species is scaleless and therefore highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to chronically poor water quality, so a mature, well-filtered system and careful use of any treatments are non-negotiable. It is best kept with peaceful, robust tankmates too large to be swallowed, as it will take small fish after dark. It can be kept with its own kind in larger tanks, though individual territorial behaviour varies.
Conservation
Macrognathus aculeatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is therefore listed as Not Evaluated (NE). The species is widespread across the lowland freshwaters of mainland and insular Southeast Asia — Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Borneo) — and appears to tolerate the heavily modified, turbid and organically enriched conditions typical of lowland agricultural and peri-urban landscapes across much of its range.
That broad tolerance provides a degree of buffer against the habitat pressures — drainage, floodplain conversion, water pollution and extraction — that threaten more specialist freshwater fishes across Southeast Asia. The species is harvested in quantity for the ornamental fish trade and as a local food fish in some parts of its range. Given its wide distribution and apparent resilience to modified habitats, the species is unlikely to face range-wide decline, though localised pressure from over-collection or acute habitat loss cannot be ruled out in the absence of formal population assessment.
