Taxonomy & naming
Macrognathus meklongensis was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson Roberts in 1986; the type locality is the Kwae Noi River in the Kao Lam Dam area of the Meklong River basin, western Thailand. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it as a valid species in the genus Macrognathus, the second major genus of the family Mastacembelidae alongside the larger genus Mastacembelus. Both genera belong to the order Synbranchiformes, which also encompasses the swamp eels (Synbranchidae); the placement is what makes the fish's eel-like shape a matter of convergent evolution rather than close kinship with the true eels of the order Anguilliformes.
The genus Macrognathus is centred on tropical Asia and is distinguished from Mastacembelus primarily by meristic and anatomical details of the dorsal spine series. ITIS (TSN 650151) confirms the current placement in Macrognathus, family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes. No synonyms have been recorded for this species, and its assignment to Macrognathus has not been challenged in subsequent revisions. The specific epithet meklongensis is a Latinised toponym referring to the Meklong (also spelled Mae Klong) drainage, the river system from which Roberts drew his type material.
Morphology
Like all spiny eels, M. meklongensis has a greatly elongated, sinuous body that tapers to a pointed tail, with the dorsal and anal fins reduced to low ribbons that merge around the caudal region. The body is smooth to the eye — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded — and clothed in mucus, giving the fish a slippery, near-scaleless texture. The snout is produced into a short, fleshy proboscis tipped with sensory nostrils that the fish uses to probe the substrate; ahead of the soft dorsal fin runs a series of isolated short spines, the "spiny" feature that names the family.
Maximum recorded standard length is 7 in, with most sources rounding this to approximately 7 in total length — a compact size for a spiny eel. No detailed colour description is available in the accessible literature for wild specimens, but trade sources note banded or striped flank patterning consistent with the genus Macrognathus, and one regional name — Mekong Red Fin Zebra Eel — hints at reddish fin margins and zebra-like barring. Ripe females are generally more full-bodied than males; otherwise the sexes are externally similar.
Habitat
Macrognathus meklongensis is endemic to the Meklong (Mae Klong) River basin of western Thailand, with the type locality in the Kwae Noi River near the Kao Lam Dam. This is a warm, lowland freshwater system draining the western slopes of the Tenasserim Hills into the Gulf of Thailand. The fish inhabits slower-flowing reaches of rivers and streams, as well as floodplain areas, where it shelters among rocks, aquatic vegetation, and accumulations of leaf litter on a substrate of sand or fine gravel.
Water conditions in the Meklong basin are typical of mainland Southeast Asian lowland rivers: warm year-round, soft to moderately soft, and slightly acidic to neutral in pH. Aquarium sources report comfortable parameters of 72–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.5, consistent with the regional hydrology. The Meklong basin is subject to monsoon-driven seasonality — rising waters and cooler overnight temperatures in the wet season likely trigger reproductive behaviour, as is typical of the spiny-eel family. Like all Mastacembelidae, this species requires clean, well-oxygenated water and is intolerant of the copper-based medications that are lethal to scaleless fishes.
Feeding
Macrognathus meklongensis is a carnivorous benthophage. In the wild it forages nocturnally along the substrate, using its sensitive, probing snout to detect small aquatic invertebrates — mosquito larvae, bloodworms (chironomid larvae), and other small benthic organisms — in the leaf litter, among plant roots, and in crevices between stones.
In the aquarium, meaty foods offered in the evening suit it well: frozen bloodworm, live or frozen mosquito larvae, and small earthworm pieces are reported as reliable diet items. As with most spiny eels, newly imported fish may be reluctant to feed by day or under bright lighting; feeding after the tank lights dim or with a dim red night-light reduces stress and encourages normal foraging behaviour. It should not be forced to compete with fast, assertive mid-water species at feeding time.
Mating
Spiny eels of the family Mastacembelidae are egg-scattering spawners that give no parental care, and all evidence — taxonomic, biological, and from the limited captive literature on close relatives — places M. meklongensis firmly in that mould. It is not a true eel and does not undertake the semelparous oceanic migration of Anguilla; it breeds in fresh water without any marine phase.
Spawning in the genus Macrognathus is generally triggered by seasonal cues: falling barometric pressure, heavy rain, rising water levels, and the slight cooling of temperatures that precede the wet season in lowland Thailand. A courting pair is believed to entwine among fine-leaved plants or root tangles before scattering adhesive eggs across the vegetation and substrate. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and the adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae. Wild observations specific to this species have not been published in the accessible scientific or aquarium literature.
Breeding
Breeding records for Macrognathus meklongensis in captivity are essentially absent from the published literature, and the species is not a common aquarium fish. By analogy with the better-documented smaller Macrognathus species (such as M. aculeatus and M. siamensis), captive spawning would most likely be triggered by a significant partial water change with slightly cooler, softer water simulating seasonal rainfall, followed by the introduction of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg-deposition sites.
Adhesive eggs would be expected to hatch within two to four days at tropical temperatures; the larvae are typically very small and require infusoria or commercial micro-foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care occurs at any stage: the adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. The practical barriers — the species' rarity in the hobby, limited breeding documentation, and the need for a dedicated, mature soft-substrate set-up — mean that most fish in trade are wild-collected rather than captive-bred.
In the aquarium
At roughly 7 in, Macrognathus meklongensis is among the smaller spiny eels and suits an aquarium of moderate size — a well-planted 20–30 US gal tank with a deep bed of fine sand is a reasonable minimum for one or two adults. Sand is important: like all spiny eels, this species burrows, and a coarse or sharp substrate prevents it from doing so and stresses it. Dense planting with fine-leaved or stem plants, along with driftwood, smooth stones, and PVC pipe shelters, provides the daytime refuges it needs as a nocturnal animal.
The most important hardware consideration is a tight-fitting, fully sealed lid. Spiny eels are notorious escape artists: they locate and squeeze through any gap, can climb filter pipes, and will leave an open tank and die on the floor. A single night's oversight with an unsecured lid can cost the fish its life. Water quality should be stable and clean — the scaleless skin is sensitive to copper-based treatments, and poor water quality quickly causes skin lesions or fungal infection. It is generally peaceful with tankmates too large to be eaten and does not bother fishes it cannot swallow, making it compatible with a range of community species that share its soft-water preferences.
Conservation
Macrognathus meklongensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2011. A Data Deficient listing means the available information was insufficient to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk — not that the species is necessarily threatened, but that its population size, trend, and the extent of any threats were unknown at the time of assessment.
As a Meklong basin endemic, the species has a geographically restricted range that makes it inherently vulnerable to localised change. The Meklong basin has been significantly altered by dam construction — the Kwae Noi River, source of the type locality, is impounded by the Khao Laem Dam (also rendered Kao Lam), and the effects of that impoundment on spiny-eel populations upstream and downstream have not been studied. Water extraction for agriculture, lowland deforestation, and the broader degradation of floodplain habitat are additional pressures common to Thailand's river systems. Until a proper survey of the species' population within the basin is carried out, its true conservation status cannot be resolved.
