Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda mogurnda was originally described by the English naturalist and surgeon John Richardson in 1844 under the combination Eleotris mogurnda, placing it in the broad and historically catch-all genus Eleotris. The name Mogurnda was eventually erected to receive a group of Australasian and New Guinean eleotrids, and the Catalog of Fishes — the governing authority for valid names — now places this species as Mogurnda mogurnda (Richardson, 1844). Older literature, aquarium books and some museum labels may still list it as Eleotris mogurnda or under the intermediate genus Vaimosa; these are synonyms.
The family is Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons — a pantropical sister lineage to the true gobies (Gobiidae and their kin). The key distinction in the hand is the pelvic fin: sleepers have two separate pelvic fins, while true gobies have them fused into a single cup-like adhesion disc. Despite bearing the common name "goby," this species is unambiguously a sleeper. The genus Mogurnda contains several Australian and New Guinean species of purple-spotted or patterned gudgeons; M. mogurnda is the most widespread and the one most frequently encountered in the hobby.
Morphology
Mogurnda mogurnda is a small, robust, somewhat cylindrical fish. FishBase records a typical maximum of around 1.5–2 in standard length, making it a genuinely small fish suited to modest aquaria. The body is pale to medium brown with a pattern of reddish-brown or purple spots and blotches along the flanks — a pattern that gives rise to the "trout gudgeon" vernacular name, though the resemblance to a trout is superficial. The pelvic fins are clearly separate and not joined into any disc, which instantly distinguishes it from the true gobies.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate. Males tend to be slightly larger, more vibrantly coloured and develop more elaborate fin colouration and extension during breeding condition. Females are fuller-bodied when gravid and may show a somewhat plainer, rounder profile. The two sexes are not always easily told apart outside of breeding condition, but a conditioned pair is usually distinguishable by body fullness and relative intensity of colour.
Habitat
The northern trout gudgeon occupies the coastal drainages of eastern Australia — including Queensland and northern New South Wales — where it inhabits a range of low-gradient freshwater to brackish environments. It is found in small streams, ditches, ponds, backwaters and estuarine margins, often in shaded, slow-moving or still water with abundant aquatic vegetation, submerged wood and leaf litter.
The species tolerates a wide range of water conditions by Australian gudgeon standards, including both purely freshwater and mildly brackish reaches. It is a subtropical to warm-temperate fish; aquarium care sources cite a preferred temperature range of approximately 64–75 °F, reflecting its origins in coastal Australian climates that experience cooler winters. This cool-water tolerance is an important care consideration: it does not want the high tropical temperatures that suit many other aquarium fish.
Feeding
Mogurnda mogurnda is a micro-predator. In its natural habitat it hunts small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans and other benthic organisms, taking prey from the bottom and among plants and debris rather than from the water column. It is not an algae grazer and not a scavenger of dried or processed food in any meaningful sense.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live and frozen foods: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops and similar small invertebrates. It typically refuses dry flake or takes it only poorly and reluctantly, and a fish kept exclusively on flake will lose condition and colour over time. Conditioning pairs for breeding specifically calls for generous live and frozen feeding. Its small mouth dictates small prey; food items should be appropriately sized.
Mating
Mogurnda mogurnda is a resident freshwater cave and substrate spawner — not an amphidromous species — and so its entire reproductive cycle takes place in fresh (or brackish) water. This is important: unlike many of the stream gobies and some sleepers whose larvae must develop at sea, this gudgeon can complete its life cycle entirely in captivity and can be bred in a well-managed aquarium.
A conditioned male claims and defends a spawning site — a rocky crevice, a cave, a length of pipe, a coconut-shell or a similar enclosed shelter — and courts females with fin displays and colour intensification. Spawning takes place inside the chosen cavity, where the female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs and the male takes over guardianship. Males can be territorial, so a tank kept for breeding benefits from multiple cave options and sufficient territory separation.
Breeding
Once a pair has spawned, the female's role ends and the male takes sole responsibility for the clutch. He guards the cave entrance, fans the adhesive eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation, and drives off intruders. Hobbyist accounts confirm successful breeding with this cycle in aquaria; the whole process is achievable without intervention in a well-set-up tank with appropriate cave furniture.
Egg incubation time varies with temperature — cooler conditions slow development relative to tropical fish, which is expected given the species' subtropical origin. Newly hatched fry are small and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria or similarly minute live organisms initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm as they grow. Many breeders separate the clutch to a rearing tank once the male is guarding, to improve fry survival and reduce the male's stress load.
In the aquarium
The northern trout gudgeon is one of the more accessible Australian native fish for the home aquarium. Its small adult size (1.5–2 in), tolerance of a range of water conditions, willingness to breed in captivity and relative hardiness once established make it appealing to keepers interested in Australian fauna. A tank of modest size — appropriate for the fish's adult dimensions and natural behaviour — is suitable for a pair or a small group, provided caves and line-of-sight breaks are included to manage male territoriality.
Water should be clean and well-oxygenated, at temperatures in the 64–75 °F range; this species should not be kept at the high tropical temperatures of 79–82 °F that are default for many community tanks — it is a subtropical fish and will suffer in sustained heat. The pH range of 6.5–7.5 covers most tapwater conditions and it tolerates mild brackishness, so a small amount of aquarium salt may be used if desired but is not required for purely freshwater populations. The tank must be well-covered, as gudgeons are capable jumpers. Diet is the critical keeper requirement: live and frozen foods are not optional but essential for this micro-predator, and a varied invertebrate-based diet should be the default from day one.
Conservation
Mogurnda mogurnda has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category in this atlas; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than assign a speculative status. It is an endemic of eastern Australian coastal drainages, a range that, while not globally tiny, is subject to ongoing pressures common across Australia's freshwater systems — water extraction, catchment degradation, agricultural runoff, invasive species (particularly carp and tilapia in relevant drainages) and climate variability.
There is no evidence of a trade-driven decline; aquarium populations are maintained in part through captive breeding, and the species is regularly reproduced by hobbyists in Australia and abroad. The broader concern is catchment-level habitat quality in its native drainages, which falls outside the aquarium trade's direct influence. Keepers are encouraged to source fish from captive-bred stock where available and to avoid releasing aquarium specimens into Australian waterways — a precaution that applies to all non-native introductions regardless of the species' native origin.
