Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda kutubuensis was described by Gerald R. Allen in 1991 from specimens collected at Lake Kutubu, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places the species in the genus Mogurnda and the family Eleotridae. It is one of several Mogurnda species endemic or near-endemic to New Guinea, a genus that has been revised repeatedly; earlier workers placed various purple-spotted gudgeons in the synonymy of Old World genera such as Eleotris or the hobbyist catch-all Mogurnda mogurnda, but modern accounts recognise M. kutubuensis as a distinct species.
The key taxonomic point for aquarists is that Mogurnda is emphatically not a true goby. True gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae) carry the pelvic fins fused into a sucker disc; eleotrids keep their pelvic fins free and separate. The genus name Mogurnda is a Latinisation of a vernacular name used in Australia for the purple-spotted gudgeon group. The epithet kutubuensis is straightforward Latin toponymy: of Kutubu, referring to Lake Kutubu, the type locality and — so far as is documented — the sole or primary home of this species.
Morphology
Like other members of the purple-spotted gudgeon complex, Mogurnda kutubuensis is a small, elongate-bodied sleeper with a rounded caudal fin and the typical two-dorsal-fin arrangement of eleotrids: a short first dorsal of stiff spines and a longer, soft-rayed second dorsal. The body is pale to tan, patterned with darker spots or blotches arranged in loose rows or irregular clusters along the flanks — a cryptic pattern suited to a benthic fish resting on or among substrate.
Precise maximum size data are sparse in the published literature accessible here, but Mogurnda species in this size class typically reach 2.5–4 in in total length. Males of the group are generally more boldly coloured than females during the breeding season, with heightened fin pigmentation and sometimes a slight swelling of the nape. The pelvic fins are clearly separate — the defining character distinguishing this gudgeon from any true goby — and the first dorsal spine is not particularly elongate.
Habitat
Mogurnda kutubuensis is known from Lake Kutubu, a highland lake in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, situated at an elevation of roughly 2625 ft above sea level. Lake Kutubu is a tectonically formed lake with relatively clear water, moderate hardness, and an equatorial highland temperature regime that keeps it cooler than the lowland lakes and rivers of New Guinea — likely in the range of 72–79 °F, though precise published figures are not available from accessible sources.
The species is benthic in habit, as all Mogurnda are, living among submerged wood, rock and leaf debris in the shallows and margins of the lake. It is a strictly freshwater fish; Lake Kutubu has no marine connection and the species has no amphidromous phase. Its restricted range to a single lake or lake system makes it a habitat specialist in ecological terms, even if its microhabitat within that lake appears to be the generalist benthic fringe typical of the genus.
Feeding
Mogurnda kutubuensis is a micro-predator in the manner of all purple-spotted gudgeons. In the wild it forages opportunistically on the bottom and among debris for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and similar benthic fauna. It is not an algae grazer and is not adapted to filter or scavenge detritus.
In aquarium husbandry, Mogurnda should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops and similar invertebrates. It will often accept good-quality sinking micro-pellets or small granules in time, but conditioning for breeding and maintaining long-term health call for regular live or frozen feeds. Dry flake offered alone is likely to be ignored or result in poor condition.
Mating
Mogurnda kutubuensis, like other resident Mogurnda, is a cave-spawning gudgeon with courtship behaviour structured around male territory. A dominant male selects and defends a small cavity — a hollow under a rock, a length of pipe or a crevice in submerged wood — and actively courts ripe females that enter his territory. Courtship involves colour intensification and fin-erection displays by the male, who attempts to entice the female into the chosen spawning site.
In an aquarium setting, providing several cave-like structures will both reduce aggression between males competing for prime sites and give a ripe female a choice, which can make the difference between successful courtship and repeated rejection. The female's readiness to spawn is typically signalled by a fuller abdomen and, in species where it has been documented in the genus, heightened colour contrast on the body or fins.
Breeding
Breeding follows the pattern universal among resident Mogurnda: the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof, wall or floor of the selected cave, then leaves the site. From that point the male takes full responsibility for the clutch, guarding the cave against intruders and fanning the eggs with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygenation and remove fungal spores until hatching occurs. The whole cycle takes place in fresh water with no marine phase.
Because the male's parental behaviour is consistent and attentive, breeding Mogurnda in a well-set-up aquarium is realistic in principle. Newly hatched fry are small and require fine first foods — infusoria or rotifers at first, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and microworm. Breeders with other Mogurnda species report that separating the egg-laden cave to a rearing vessel improves survival. Specific reproductive data for M. kutubuensis are sparse in the accessible literature, and hobbyist experience with this particular species is limited given its rarity in the trade.
In the aquarium
Mogurnda kutubuensis is rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby; most purple-spotted gudgeons in trade are the more widespread Mogurnda mogurnda from Australia or, occasionally, New Guinean Mogurnda species without confirmed identification. If obtained, the basic husbandry follows the genus template: a tank of at least 23.5–31.5 in for a pair, with a dark substrate, plenty of cave-forming structure (rocks, driftwood, clay pots, ceramic tubes), and generous cover to break lines of sight between males.
Water should be warm, clean fresh water — targeting the highland lake conditions of the type locality, so around 72–79 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline pH (reflecting the moderate hardness of Lake Kutubu), and good filtration without strong flow. The fish does not need or tolerate salt. Feed on small live and frozen invertebrates; a varied diet is essential for condition and colour. The tank must be covered — Mogurnda, like most gudgeons, will jump from open aquaria. Males may quarrel over caves, so providing multiple retreat sites for any group is important.
Conservation
Mogurnda kutubuensis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List as far as is documented in accessible sources; we record it as Not Evaluated here rather than guess at a status or year. This is a concerning gap: the species appears to be endemic to a single lake — Lake Kutubu — which in conservation biology immediately raises the question of vulnerability. A range confined to one water body means any catastrophic change to that lake (pollution, invasive species, hydrological alteration, watershed deforestation) could affect the species' entire global population.
Lake Kutubu has faced pressure from oil and gas development in the Southern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea, and from introduced fish species. The related Mogurnda fauna of New Guinea has been identified in broader ichthyological literature as among the groups most at risk from habitat loss and the introduction of tilapia and other alien fish. A formal IUCN assessment — particularly a range and population survey — would be valuable for this species and the other narrow-range New Guinea Mogurnda. There is no indication that the aquarium trade exerts significant pressure on wild populations, as the species is not regularly exported.
