Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda larapintae was described by Edward Charles Stirling and Amandus Heinrich Christian Zietz in 1893 from material collected in the Finke River drainage of central Australia, where the Aranda (Arrernte) people know the river as Larapinta — the species epithet honours that name. The Catalog of Fishes places the species in genus Mogurnda, family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons.
This is not a true goby. The true gobies (Gobiidae and close relatives Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae) are united by a distinctive character: their pelvic fins are fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc used for clinging to surfaces. In the Eleotridae, including Mogurnda, the pelvic fins remain separate. The easiest field check is to look at the underside of the fish near the chest — a gudgeon shows two separate fins; a true goby shows a single fused disc. Some databases have listed the species under the authority (Zietz, 1896), but FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes confirm the authority as (Stirling & Zietz, 1893).
The purple-spotted gudgeons (genus Mogurnda) are an Australasian eleotrid group related to the carp gudgeons (Hypseleotris) and the larger sleepers (Oxyeleotris), all of which are primarily distributed across Australia and New Guinea.
Morphology
The desert gudgeon reaches around 5 in standard length — moderately sized for a Mogurnda. The body is stocky and somewhat compressed, with a rounded snout and a large mouth suited to ambush predation. Coloration is bluish or brownish with small red or reddish-orange spots scattered across the flanks, giving the fish a mottled, jewel-like appearance; there is also lighter, variable marbling or mottling depending on mood and substrate. The belly tends to be paler.
Fin counts are 9–10 dorsal spines followed by 10–14 dorsal soft rays, and 1 anal spine with 9–12 anal soft rays — the split dorsal (first spiny, second soft-rayed) is a typical eleotrid character. A sensory papillae system replaces the lateral line; the fish lacks a formal lateral line canal, instead detecting water movement through sensory rows on the head and body.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle in this species. Males and females are not dramatically different in colour or fin shape, though males are generally slightly larger.
Habitat
Mogurnda larapintae is endemic to the Finke River system — the upper reaches in the Macdonnell Ranges of central Australia, Northern Territory. The Finke River is considered one of the world's oldest river systems, and the waterholes it forms in the arid interior are permanent or semi-permanent refuges in an otherwise extreme desert landscape. The desert gudgeon lives in these larger, deeper waterholes, favouring rocky pools with abundant cover: submerged rocks, undercut banks, shallow vegetated margins, and woody debris.
This is a warm freshwater fish inhabiting the interior of the Australian continent, far from the coast and well above sea level in the ranges. Water temperatures in the Macdonnell Ranges waterholes swing considerably between seasons — warm in the long summer, cooler in winter — and the desert gudgeon is adapted to this thermal range. It is a strictly freshwater species; its deep-inland location means no contact with estuarine or brackish conditions.
Feeding
The desert gudgeon is a carnivorous ambush predator. In the wild it feeds on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and small fishes, hunting from cover in the rocky pools and waterholes it inhabits. It is an opportunistic micro-predator typical of the Mogurnda group, sitting still and striking quickly at passing prey.
In the aquarium it should be offered a varied diet of live and frozen meaty foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and chopped invertebrates. Larger individuals may also take small feeder fish or earthworm pieces. Like most eleotrids it is not a reliable taker of dry or flake food and does best when live and frozen items form the core of the diet; fish kept exclusively on flake tend to lose condition over time.
Mating
Mogurnda larapintae is a resident freshwater cave/substrate spawner with male parental care — the standard reproductive strategy in the Mogurnda group and in most resident eleotrid gudgeons. Spawning in the wild is triggered by warmer temperatures, occurring when water temperatures exceed 68 °F. Males secure and defend a suitable site: the underside of a flat rock, a crevice, an overhang, or any firm hard surface in the rocky waterhole environment.
Courtship involves the male displaying to females from his chosen site. Because the fish lives in permanent waterholes year-round, breeding opportunities may recur through the warmer months of the Australian summer whenever conditions are suitable and the fish are in good condition.
Breeding
Females lay 200–800 adhesive eggs on the underside of a hard surface — typically the underside of a flat stone or a cave roof — and then withdraw. The male takes sole responsibility for the clutch from that point: he guards the site against intruders and fans the eggs with his fins to maintain water circulation and prevent fungal colonisation until the eggs hatch. Newly hatched fry are reported to be approximately 0.5 in in length and will take newly hatched brine shrimp as a first food.
Because the complete breeding cycle occurs in fresh water with no marine larval phase, the desert gudgeon is in principle captive-breedable, unlike amphidromous gobies whose larvae must develop at sea. The provision of a warm tank (above 68 °F), flat rocks or cave spawning sites, and good live-food conditioning should bring a mature pair into spawning condition. The male's parental guarding means intervention is not necessary for eggs to hatch, though removing the male once fry are free-swimming prevents predation.
In the aquarium
The desert gudgeon is an uncommon species in the hobby — it is an Australian endemic with limited export availability, and most specimens are wild-collected from a restricted natural range. For those who obtain it, a tank of 20–30 US gal suits a pair or small group, with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, rocks to create caves and line-of-sight breaks, and robust filtration to maintain clean water. Being a warm-temperate to tropical freshwater fish from the Australian interior, it tolerates a broader temperature range than many tropical species, doing well from roughly 68–86 °F.
This is a predatory species and should not be kept with fish small enough to eat. Males will be territorial with each other, so provide multiple caves and visual breaks to distribute aggression. It does not need salt and is a strictly freshwater fish. Its diet should centre on live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, and the like — rather than dry foods. It is a sit-and-wait predator by temperament, more likely to be spotted lurking in a cave mouth than actively patrolling, which gives it a watchful, characterful presence in a species tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Mogurnda larapintae as Near Threatened in February 2019, reflecting its highly restricted endemic range within the Finke River system. As a species confined to permanent waterholes in a desert landscape, it is inherently vulnerable to any reduction in waterhole permanence — prolonged drought, groundwater extraction, or changes in flow regime in one of Australia's most arid catchments could impact populations significantly.
The primary documented threat is invasion by exotic species, particularly introduced fishes that compete with or prey on the desert gudgeon in its waterhole refuges. Although portions of its range fall within protected reserves and national parks in the Macdonnell Ranges, there is no formal ongoing population monitoring in place. The species' reliance on a small number of permanent waterholes as refugia in an otherwise inhospitable landscape means that individual waterhole loss could remove substantial proportions of the total population.
