Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda maccuneae was formally described by Jenkins, Buston and Allen in 2000 from specimens collected in Lake Kutubu, Papua New Guinea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places it in the genus Mogurnda and the family Eleotridae. This is not a true goby. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae) bear their pelvic fins fused into a cup-like sucker disc; the eleotrids, including Mogurnda, keep their pelvic fins entirely separate, and that single character separates the two lineages at a glance. The hobby and some older literature group both lineages loosely as 'gobies', but the distinction matters scientifically and in care.
The species name maccuneae honours Amy McCune, an ichthyologist at Cornell University. The genus Mogurnda is the principal group of gudgeons in Australia and New Guinea, allied with other Australasian eleotrids such as Hypseleotris (carp gudgeons) and Oxyeleotris (sleeper perch). No junior synonyms have been recorded for this species. The authority is sometimes abbreviated as Jenkins et al. 2000, but all three describer names are Jenkins, Buston and Allen.
Morphology
Mogurnda maccuneae is a small, elongate gudgeon reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. The body is pale grey overall, with dusky, lightly pigmented fins — a more cryptic, washed-out colouration than most of its more vividly marked congeners such as the purple-spotted gudgeon M. mogurnda. The most distinctive external feature is the unusually spatulate snout, described as 'duck-billed', which gives the head a flattened, broad profile that sets it apart within the genus.
Meristic details recorded at description include dorsal spines VIII–XI and 12–13 soft dorsal rays; a single anal spine and 12–13 soft anal rays; and 31–32 vertebrae. As in all eleotrids, the pelvic fins are separate rather than fused, the caudal fin is rounded, and the body is covered in ctenoid scales. Sexual dimorphism within the species has not been formally characterised in the scientific literature; the closely related M. mogurnda shows the usual Mogurnda pattern of males being somewhat brighter and larger than females, which may apply here, but no published description for M. maccuneae confirms this.
Habitat
Mogurnda maccuneae is known exclusively from Lake Kutubu, a highland lake in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, at roughly 2625 ft above sea level. It occupies the near-bottom zone of the lake, recorded at depths around 16 ft, where it is benthopelagic — living close to the substrate in the lake's littoral and sub-littoral margins. Lake Kutubu is a clear, ancient lake fed by rivers draining forested limestone karst, and its endemic fish community evolved in relative isolation.
The lake's waters are fresh, with parameters reflecting its highland, limestone-influenced catchment — likely moderately hard and near-neutral to slightly alkaline, in contrast to the soft, acidic lowland blackwaters of many other New Guinea fish. The species shares this habitat with at least twelve other endemic fish species, making Lake Kutubu one of the most significant endemic freshwater systems in the western Pacific. The broader catchment was long relatively undisturbed, but hydrocarbon extraction activities in the Kutubu oil field, which drains partly into the lake's watershed, have degraded water quality significantly since the 1990s.
Feeding
Mogurnda maccuneae is a micro-predator, consistent with the feeding strategy of the genus and of eleotrids generally. Its natural diet in Lake Kutubu has not been formally documented in the published literature, but the closely related Mogurnda species eat small aquatic invertebrates — bloodworm, mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, aquatic insects and their larvae — taken from among the bottom substrate and benthic vegetation. The spatulate, broad-snouted head of M. maccuneae may be adapted to foraging in particular substrate types or crevices along the lake floor.
In any aquarium context this species would require small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops and similar items. Mogurnda species typically show limited interest in dried flake or pellet diets, and a fish maintained solely on dry food tends to lose condition; varied small meaty foods are the standard recommendation for the whole genus. Its small adult size means foods should be sized down accordingly.
Mating
No published study of the mating behaviour of Mogurnda maccuneae exists, given the species' extreme rarity and the logistical difficulty of observing or collecting it in a deteriorating lake system. However, the genus Mogurnda is well characterised as a group of resident freshwater cave-spawners with male parental care — the same broad strategy used by many small eleotrids across the Australasian region. Males of Mogurnda species typically establish and defend a cave, crevice, overhanging rock ledge or firm substrate surface, and court females there with fin display and colour intensification.
The courting male of the related M. mogurnda is known to show intensified colour and to guard his chosen site against rival males while actively soliciting females. A ripe female is drawn into or onto the spawning site where the adhesive eggs are deposited. Because M. maccuneae is a resident of a single enclosed lake — it does not undertake any marine larval phase — its reproductive biology is expected to follow the same in-lake pattern, with the whole cycle completing in fresh water.
Breeding
Based on what is known of the genus, Mogurnda maccuneae is a cave or substrate spawner in which the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on a hard surface — a cave roof or wall, beneath a flat stone, in a rocky crevice or on overhanging bark — and the male then takes sole charge of guarding and fanning them until they hatch. The breeding mode is 'resident freshwater cave-spawner with male parental care', not egg-scattering and not mouthbrooding. Because the larvae do not require a marine larval phase, the complete life cycle can occur within the lake (or, in theory, within a suitable aquarium).
In practice, M. maccuneae is not available in the aquarium trade and is not known to have been bred in captivity. Hobbyists interested in breeding within the genus would find the closely related M. mogurnda (the purple-spotted gudgeon, which appears in specialist Australasian fish keeping) a more accessible species that follows the same cave-spawning pattern. Should M. maccuneae ever be established in a captive-breeding conservation programme — a logical step given its critical status — the approach for other Mogurnda (small caves or coconut shells, conditioning on live foods, male-only guard of eggs) would form the starting point.
In the aquarium
Mogurnda maccuneae is not available in the aquarium trade and should not be sought commercially — it is a Critically Endangered endemic of a single highly threatened lake, and any trade collection would directly harm wild populations. This article describes its biology for educational completeness, not as a keeping guide.
For hobbyists drawn to the genus, the purple-spotted gudgeon Mogurnda mogurnda is the most commonly encountered congener in Australian specialist circles and shares M. maccuneae's basic needs: a small, well-covered aquarium with caves and line-of-sight breaks for males, warm fresh water without added salt, a varied diet of small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, Artemia, daphnia, mosquito larvae), and a tight-fitting lid, as Mogurnda species can be active jumpers. Males of Mogurnda can be territorial, so providing multiple retreat sites is important where more than one male is kept. Like all eleotrids, Mogurnda keeps its pelvic fins separate and does not use a sucker disc — it is not a climber of glass surfaces as some true gobies are.
Conservation
Mogurnda maccuneae is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published on 4 December 2019. It is endemic to Lake Kutubu, a lake that also supports twelve other endemic fish species — one of the highest concentrations of endemic freshwater fish in the western Pacific. The principal threat is environmental degradation tied to oil and gas extraction in the Kutubu oil field, whose drainage catchment partially overlaps with the lake's watershed. Multiple documented fish-kill events and chemical pollution episodes have affected the lake since production began in the 1990s.
Lake Kutubu's endemic fish community has no refuge population elsewhere: every individual of M. maccuneae lives within this single lake system, making local extinction events irreversible. Conservation measures would require stringent regulation of hydrocarbon waste management and catchment protection upstream of the lake, alongside monitoring of the endemic fish populations. No captive insurance population is known to exist. The species receives no protection from the aquarium trade — it is not in commerce — but the broader challenge of governing industrial activity in Papua New Guinea's highlands remains the overriding conservation concern.
