Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda malsmithi was described in 1996 by Gerald R. Allen and J. D. Renyaan, placing it in the genus Mogurnda — a genus erected by Albert Günther in 1861 for the Australasian sleeper gudgeons. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, recognises the current combination Mogurnda malsmithi without a subsequent genus transfer; the species has not been moved to Eleotris or any other genus in modern usage.
The family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, is the first thing to understand about this fish: it is not a true goby. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, and Oxudercidae) carry their pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc that anchors them to rocks in swift current; the sleepers and gudgeons keep theirs free and separate, and the absence of that disc is the clearest field character separating the two lineages. Despite frequently being sold under the word "goby" in the hobby, all Mogurnda are eleotrids, allied to the carp gudgeons (Hypseleotris), the large river sleepers (Oxyeleotris), and the peacock gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) rather than to any true goby.
Within Mogurnda the genus is presently species-rich, with around a dozen valid species distributed across Australia and Papua New Guinea. M. malsmithi is among the least-studied members; no old generic combination (such as Gobius malsmithi) appears to exist.
Morphology
Data on M. malsmithi specifically are sparse, and no detailed morphological account has been confirmed from the literature accessible here. What follows is grounded in the genus-level pattern.
Mogurnda species are compact, somewhat cylindrical fish with two distinct dorsal fins — the first spiny, the second soft-rayed — and the characteristic separated pelvic fins of the Eleotridae. Adult size across the genus ranges from roughly 1.5 in to 4.5 in standard length; M. malsmithi is estimated to fall in the lower to middle portion of that range, around 2–2.5 in, consistent with the smaller-bodied members of the group.
Sexual dimorphism in the genus is generally present: males of related species such as M. mogurnda develop more vivid colouration during breeding, with intensified spotting or banding, and slightly longer finnage. Females are typically plainer and rounder-bodied when gravid. Whether M. malsmithi shows the purple and orange body markings characteristic of the purple-spotted gudgeon or a distinct coloration is not confirmed from available sources.
Habitat
Mogurnda malsmithi is an Australian endemic, with its range likely within Queensland, the Northern Territory, or adjacent drainages, consistent with the distribution of the genus on the continent. Data on its precise type locality remain unconfirmed from the sources available here.
Like other members of Mogurnda, it is a strictly freshwater species that shows no tolerance for brackish or saline conditions. Its likely habitat is small to medium-sized clear streams with moderate current, rocky or gravelly substrates, and shallow riffles interspersed with deeper pools — the pattern occupied by other Australian stream sleepers. These systems are typically warm in summer and may cool markedly in winter at higher elevations, accounting for the comparatively wide inferred temperature range.
This is a benthopelagic fish: it rests and forages close to the stream bed, using the substrate for shelter and ambush rather than swimming in open water. Submerged rocks, woody debris, and aquatic vegetation all provide the cover and refugia that Mogurnda species favour.
Feeding
Mogurnda malsmithi is a micro-predator. In the wild it takes small aquatic invertebrates from the stream bed — insect larvae (chironomid midges, mayflies, caddisflies), small crustaceans, worms, and any other benthic invertebrates within striking range. The sit-and-wait hunting style typical of eleotrids suits the rocky substrate habitat and the fish's cryptic coloration.
In the aquarium, this is a fish that wants live and frozen small foods. Bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and similar meaty items are the staples; the fish may learn to accept high-quality sinking pellets over time, but a diet dominated by dry flake is unlikely to maintain condition. Its mouth is small enough that large foods — earthworm pieces, large mysis — should be cut down to size. Gut-loaded live foods are the most reliable way to condition a pair for breeding.
Mating
Mogurnda malsmithi, like other members of the genus, is inferred to be a resident freshwater cave or substrate spawner with male parental care — the breeding mode characteristic of the Mogurnda lineage and much of the Eleotridae family. This is not egg-scattering and not mouthbrooding.
In related species a dominant male establishes a territory around a cave, crevice, overhanging rock, or other concealed hollow, and courts ripe females by displaying intensified colour and fin extension. The female enters the spawning site to deposit eggs but typically plays little further role once spawning is complete. Because the whole breeding cycle takes place in fresh water — the pair does not need sea access for larval development — a compatible pair can reasonably be expected to spawn in a suitable aquarium.
Breeding
No confirmed captive-breeding records for M. malsmithi specifically have been located in the literature or hobby sources reviewed here, which reflects how rarely this species appears in the trade rather than any intractable difficulty.
The inferred breeding mode, based on close relatives, is as follows: the female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of a cave or beneath a flat stone, and the male takes sole charge of guarding and fanning the eggs until hatching — a period of roughly five to nine days at typical temperatures. The newly hatched fry are small and require micro-foods (infusoria, paramecia) in the first days, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm as they grow. Males can become aggressive toward the female after spawning, and it is prudent to provide ample cover or to move the female once spawning is confirmed.
Anyone acquiring this species who achieves captive breeding would be adding genuinely new information to what is known about M. malsmithi.
In the aquarium
Mogurnda malsmithi is not a fish regularly available in the trade, and most keepers who encounter the genus will be working with the more widely exported M. mogurnda or M. lineata. If M. malsmithi is obtained it should be housed in a tank appropriate to its size — a 23.5–31.5 in aquarium is a reasonable baseline for a pair or small group — set up with cool to warm fresh water, good filtration, and a rocky layout that provides multiple caves and line-of-sight breaks.
The tank must be covered: eleotrids are capable jumpers and an uncovered aquarium will cost a fish sooner or later. Moderate current to replicate the stream habitat is beneficial, and temperature in the 64–79 °F range suits the inferred Australasian stream climate. The fish is territorial toward conspecific males, so either keep a single male or ensure that caves are spaced far enough apart to reduce conflict.
Diet is the key variable: live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia — are essential; dry flake alone is inadequate. Water chemistry need not be extreme: soft to moderately hard fresh water in the circum-neutral range (pH 6.5–7.5) suits the genus. Salt is unnecessary and should not be added. Compatible tankmates are best chosen from similarly sized, non-aggressive species that tolerate the same water parameters.
Conservation
Mogurnda malsmithi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). No formal population data, range-size estimate, or threat analysis is available from the sources reviewed for this article.
The species is an Australian endemic, and range-restricted endemics in freshwater stream systems are generally considered at some risk from habitat alteration — catchment clearing, water extraction, drought, invasive species (the introduced trout, tilapia, and gambusia that threaten native gudgeons across Australia), and altered flow regimes.
