Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda mbuta was described by Gerald R. Allen and J. Renyaan in 1996 from specimens collected in Lake Mbuta, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The genus Mogurnda belongs to the family Eleotridae — the sleepers and gudgeons — and is placed there by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names. The family Eleotridae is the first thing to understand about this fish: although the genus is sold and discussed under the vernacular term "goby" in many references, Mogurnda and its relatives are not true gobies. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) carry their paired pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc used to cling to surfaces; eleotrids keep the pelvic fins separate, and that single anatomical character separates the two lineages.
The genus Mogurnda is essentially Australasian in distribution, with species in Australia and New Guinea. The purple-spotted gudgeon (M. mogurnda) of Australia is the best-known member, and M. adspersa and several New Guinea endemics share the genus. M. mbuta is one of the more narrowly restricted members, known solely from the Lake Mbuta basin in the Bird's Head region of western New Guinea. The species epithet mbuta is a toponym: it takes its name directly from Lake Mbuta, the only water body from which it has ever been recorded.
Morphology
Mogurnda mbuta is a small, elongate, bottom-associated fish reaching a recorded maximum of 4 in standard length (SL). Like other eleotrids it has two separate dorsal fins — the first composed of spines (8–9 in this species), the second of soft rays (11–12) — and an anal fin with one spine and 12–14 soft rays. The vertebral count is 31–32. The body shape is the typical gudgeon plan: somewhat cylindrical and compressed posteriorly, with a broad, flattened head suited to a benthic lifestyle.
As in other Mogurnda species, the pelvic fins are separate and not fused, distinguishing the fish instantly from any true goby. Detailed colour descriptions from the original description are not widely reproduced in secondary sources, but the genus is generally marked with reddish-brown to orange spots and mottled patterning on a pale or olive ground — the purple-spotted pattern that gives M. mogurnda its common name is typical. Whether M. mbuta shows sexual dimorphism in the manner of other Mogurnda (males of several species develop vivid breeding colouration and extended finnage) is not documented in the available literature; data on this point are sparse for this species specifically.
Habitat
Mogurnda mbuta is a strictly freshwater, benthopelagic species confined to Lake Mbuta and its basin in the Bird's Head Peninsula of Irian Jaya (western New Guinea), Indonesia. FishBase records a depth range of approximately 7 ft and ambient water conditions of around 79 °F and pH 6.4, consistent with a warm, slightly acidic New Guinea lowland lake. The species is not tolerant of brackish water and has no documented salinity range beyond fresh water.
Lake Mbuta is a small water body with an area of roughly 12 mi², and M. mbuta appears to be confined entirely to this basin. This extreme endemism — known from a single lake — makes it one of the most geographically restricted gudgeons in the genus and explains its Critically Endangered status. The lake occupies a lowland setting in a region subject to habitat change from human activities and biological invasion by introduced species.
Feeding
FishBase records Mogurnda mbuta as carnivorous with a trophic level of 3.4, placing it firmly in the micro-predator guild. This is consistent with the diet documented across the genus: Mogurnda species take small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other benthic invertebrates — as their primary prey, hunting by sight at or near the substrate.
In an aquarium setting, M. mbuta would be expected to require small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and similar offerings — in line with other Mogurnda. Like most eleotrids it is unlikely to accept dried flake as a staple and would typically be reluctant to take it or refuse it entirely. Good conditioning calls for a varied diet of appropriately sized meaty foods.
Mating
No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Mogurnda mbuta specifically in the published literature. By analogy with the better-studied congeners — M. adspersa and M. mogurnda both of which are relatively well known to hobbyists and researchers — the genus is a resident freshwater cave or substrate spawner in which the male takes up a territory around a suitable cavity, crevice, shell, or undercut bank and courts ripe females there, displaying intensified colouration and extended fins.
The whole reproductive cycle takes place in fresh water. This is a resident freshwater breeder, not an amphidromous species, so its larvae do not develop at sea and the fish is not dependent on estuarine or marine connectivity. If kept and conditioned, a pair would be expected to seek out and defend a cave-like spawning site.
Breeding
No captive breeding data exist for Mogurnda mbuta, and it is effectively absent from the aquarium trade. From what is documented in the closely related M. mogurnda and M. adspersa, the genus is a cave or substrate spawner: the female deposits adhesive eggs on a firm surface — the roof or wall of a cavity, the underside of a flat stone, or a crevice — and the male then guards and fans them until hatching. Parental care is male-led from that point; the female's role ends at egg deposition.
Because M. mbuta is a resident freshwater species rather than an amphidromous one, the larval cycle is self-contained in fresh water and the fish should in principle be breedable in an aquarium if a conditioned pair and suitable spawning sites were provided. However, given that the species is Critically Endangered, wild-caught individuals are not legitimately available in the trade and no captive population is known. Captive breeding, should it ever occur, would represent a conservation contribution.
In the aquarium
Mogurnda mbuta does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade and should be considered unavailable to hobbyists under normal circumstances. As a Critically Endangered species known from a single small lake in western New Guinea, it has no legitimate pathway into the hobby via legal collection, and no captive-bred population is known to exist.
For reference: a congeneric like M. mogurnda or M. adspersa, which shares the same body plan and biology, would be kept in a warm freshwater aquarium at around 75–82 °F, pH near 6.5–7.5, with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, subdued lighting, and caves or crevices for cover and spawning. The dietary requirement is small live and frozen foods; flake is not an adequate staple. Males can be territorial with each other and benefit from visual breaks in the aquascape. These husbandry notes are extrapolated from congeners and offered as background context only.
Conservation
Mogurnda mbuta is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in December 2019 under criterion B1ab(iii): a restricted range estimated at roughly 12 mi² (extent of occurrence), with ongoing decline in the quality and area of its habitat. The species is known only from Lake Mbuta and its immediate basin in the Bird's Head Peninsula of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Threats identified in the assessment include habitat degradation and the introduction of non-native species — pressures that act with particular severity on a species confined to a single small lake with no other known populations.
The extreme endemism of M. mbuta means that any significant deterioration of Lake Mbuta's ecosystem could extirpate the species entirely. There is no buffer of populations elsewhere. The fish does not appear in the aquarium trade, so there is no captive safety-net population and no collecting pressure from the hobby — but equally no captive reserve exists if the wild population declines further. Conservation of M. mbuta depends entirely on the integrity of Lake Mbuta itself, making it a flagship for the protection of this small Papuan water body.
