Mogurnda mosa is a small sleeper gudgeon endemic to freshwater streams of Papua New Guinea — and, despite its common placement in the aquarium trade alongside gobies, it is not a true goby at all. It belongs to the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, a sister lineage to the true gobies in which the pelvic fins remain separate rather than fusing into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines a real goby. Described by Allen and Renyaan in 1996 from a Papuan mountain stream, it is a compact, benthic micro-predator that stays close to the substrate, foraging among rock and debris for small invertebrates. Like others in the genus Mogurnda it is a resident freshwater cave-spawner with genuine male parental care — a cycle that plays out entirely in fresh water, which is what makes it tractable for the home aquarium where so many amphidromous stream gobies are not.

Taxonomy & naming

Mogurnda mosa was formally described by Gerald R. Allen and J. Renyaan in 1996, the species epithet mosa referring to a locality in Papua New Guinea from which material was collected. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — the governing authority for valid names — places it in the genus Mogurnda, family Eleotridae, and no junior synonyms or subsequent re-combinations are on record. It has been a stable, valid species since its original description.

The family placement is the first thing to understand about this fish. Eleotridae is the family of sleepers and gudgeons, a lineage that is closely related to, but distinct from, the true gobies of the family Gobiidae and their near-relatives the Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae. The easiest morphological marker separating the two lineages is the pelvic fins: in true gobies they are fused into a cup-like suction disc used to anchor the fish to rock and current; in the sleepers and gudgeons — including every Mogurnda — the pelvic fins remain separate. Despite carrying the trade label 'goby,' M. mosa is correctly a sleeper gudgeon.

The genus Mogurnda is largely an Australasian and Melanesian group, concentrated in Australia and Papua New Guinea, where it occupies upland and montane freshwater streams. Mogurnda mosa is distinguished from the sympatric M. variegata by differences in colour pattern and morphology noted at the time of description.

Morphology

Mogurnda mosa is a small, benthic fish reaching approximately 1.5–2.5 in standard length. The body plan is typical of the Mogurnda genus: somewhat cylindrical and slightly laterally compressed toward the caudal peduncle, with a rounded head, a broad, blunt snout, and large eyes set high on the head — an adaptation for surveillance from a bottom-resting position. The dorsal coloration is darker, providing counter-shading against the stream bed; the flanks show variable patterning with diffuse markings or blotches.

The diagnostic character of the family is visible externally: the two pelvic fins are separate, lying side-by-side below the body without fusing, which distinguishes sleepers from the true gobies at a glance. The two dorsal fins are separated, the first short and spinous, the second longer and rayed. Fin coloration is variable and may carry faint banding or spotting, as is typical across the genus.

Sexual dimorphism in Mogurnda follows the genus pattern: males are generally larger and develop more vivid coloration and more extended fins during breeding condition, while females are smaller and rounder-bodied when gravid. The degree of dimorphism in M. mosa specifically is not extensively documented given the species' limited coverage in aquarium literature, but the genus-level pattern is well established.

Habitat

Mogurnda mosa is endemic to Papua New Guinea, where it inhabits freshwater mountain and upland streams. The type locality is a montane drainage in PNG, and the species is associated with clear, well-oxygenated flowing water typical of highland Papuan stream systems — shallow riffles and runs over rock, gravel and organic debris, with moderate to brisk current and high dissolved oxygen content.

Water conditions in montane PNG streams are generally cool relative to lowland tropical rivers, clear, and close to neutral pH. The Mogurnda genus as a whole favours temperatures in the range of roughly 64–77 °F, cooler than the warm lowland waters preferred by many other freshwater eleotrids, reflecting the upland character of its native drainages. This is strictly a freshwater species; it is not estuarine, not brackish, and unlike many tropical eleotrids such as Dormitator or Eleotris, it has no association with tidal or coastal environments.

Feeding

Mogurnda mosa is a micro-predator, hunting small aquatic invertebrates from and near the substrate in the manner typical of the genus. In the wild it takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other benthic invertebrates, foraging by sight with a sit-and-ambush or slow-prowl strategy along the stream bed — behaviour consistent with its nocturnal tendencies and bottom-oriented body form.

In the aquarium, like other Mogurnda, it requires small live and frozen foods to thrive. Bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops, and small aquatic insect larvae form the core of a good diet. Dry flake is typically refused or only reluctantly taken, and fish kept solely on dry food tend to lose condition. Offering a varied rotation of frozen and live foods is important both for general health and for bringing a pair into spawning condition. Its mouth size constrains prey dimensions — foods should be appropriately small.

Mating

Mogurnda mosa is a resident freshwater cave-spawner in which the male takes responsibility for the spawning site and subsequent brood care. Males establish and defend small territories around a suitable cavity — a crevice between rocks, a hollow beneath a stone, a piece of pipe or an artificial cave in an aquarium — and court gravid females there by displaying intensified colour and spread fins.

Courting males are territorial and will spar with rivals that approach the nest site; in an aquarium housing more than one male, providing multiple caves and line-of-sight breaks among decor reduces conflict. A ripe female, identifiable by her fuller body when gravid, is led or coaxed into the selected cavity where spawning takes place.

Breeding

Spawning follows the Mogurnda genus pattern: the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on a firm surface inside the cave — the roof or wall of the cavity — and then typically departs. From this point the male assumes all parental duties, fanning the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation, removing any that fail, and guarding the entrance against intruders. Hatching generally occurs within 3–6 days depending on temperature.

Because Mogurnda mosa is a resident freshwater species — not amphidromous — the full breeding cycle takes place in fresh water and can be completed in the home aquarium. This places it alongside Tateurndina and the resident Rhinogobius species as gobies and gudgeons that are realistically breedable in captivity, unlike the amphidromous cling-gobies whose larvae must develop at sea. Fry are small at hatching and benefit from micro-foods such as infusoria before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm. Separating a spawning cave to a rearing vessel after the eggs are laid can improve survival rates if other tank inhabitants are present.

In the aquarium

Mogurnda mosa is an infrequently seen species in the hobby, and detailed keeper accounts are sparse, but the genus-level requirements are clear and applicable here. A modest, well-filtered freshwater aquarium suits a small group or a pair. The tank should be set up as a highland stream biotope or equivalent: clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow, a substrate of sand or fine gravel with rounded stones, some larger flat rocks creating crevices, pieces of bogwood, and if desired, hardy low-light plants. Multiple cave structures are important both as shelter and as spawning sites.

Water temperature should reflect the cooler, upland origin of the species — the genus is comfortable in the range of approximately 64–77 °F, distinctly cooler than the standard tropical setting many aquarists default to. pH near neutral (approximately 6.8–7.2) and good water quality are the other key parameters. The species is strictly freshwater; salt is not needed and should not be added.

Mogurnda mosa is a benthic ambush predator and a jumper — a tight-fitting lid is essential. It is territorial at the male level (caves) but generally peaceful toward fish it cannot swallow. It should not be mixed with very small fish that fall within prey size. Diet must centre on live and frozen foods; flake will largely be refused. Given its rarity in the trade, specimens encountered are likely wild-collected from PNG, and extra attention to acclimatisation and water quality is warranted on arrival.

Conservation

Mogurnda mosa has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assigning a speculative status. The species is a narrow endemic of Papua New Guinea, restricted to montane freshwater drainages, and like many such restricted-range eleotrids it is inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat change — sedimentation from upland agriculture, mining run-off, or deforestation altering stream hydrology and water clarity in its native drainages.

Because data on the species' distribution, population size, and the condition of its specific catchments are limited, it is impossible to characterise its status with confidence. It is rare in the aquarium trade; specimens that do appear are likely wild-collected from Papua New Guinea. The broader montane freshwater biodiversity of Papua New Guinea remains one of the world's least-surveyed, and small stream endemics like M. mosa represent a category of conservation concern that is poorly captured by existing assessment frameworks.
