Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda pardalis was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1875 on the basis of material from New Guinea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names, places it in the genus Mogurnda within the family Eleotridae — the sleepers and gudgeons. Several older combinations exist in the literature; the species has at various times been referred to Eleotris and Vaimosa before settling in Mogurnda, and workers consulting older references should be aware of that synonymy.
The family Eleotridae is the first and most important thing to understand about this fish: it is not a true goby. The true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) carry their paired pelvic fins fused at the base into a cup-like adhesive disc; the sleepers keep those fins separate, a character visible on any live fish. The Gobioidei as a whole have been extensively revised in recent years, and the broad grouping sometimes marketed as "gudgeons" in the aquarium trade spans several eleotrid genera native to Australasia and the Indo-Pacific.
Within Eleotridae, Mogurnda is an Australasian lineage. The roughly twenty valid Mogurnda species are distributed across Australia and New Guinea, and several have been popular in specialist freshwater aquariums, particularly the purple-spotted gudgeon (M. mogurnda) of eastern Australia. M. pardalis is less frequently exported but occasionally appears in the specialist trade.
Morphology
Mogurnda pardalis is a moderately sized, thickset gudgeon with the broad head and large mouth characteristic of the genus. Published data on maximum size are sparse; like most Mogurnda it is likely to reach somewhere between 8 and 4.5 in total length, with males typically larger than females, though reliable figures for this specific species should be confirmed against a current FishBase or primary-literature record. The body is cylindrical forward, tapering to a compressed caudal peduncle, and the two dorsal fins — a typical eleotrid character — are well separated.
The name pardalis (Latin for 'leopard' or 'spotted like a leopard') refers to the spotted or mottled pattern on the body and fins. Colouration in Mogurnda is variable and often intensifies in breeding condition, with males developing brighter or more contrasting markings than females. The separate pelvic fins, held slightly apart rather than united into a disc, immediately distinguish this fish from any true goby of similar size and build.
Sexual dimorphism is present, as in other Mogurnda: males tend to be larger and more vividly coloured, with extended finnage, while females are smaller and rounder-bodied when gravid. Breeding males may develop pronounced colour or fin development — data specific to M. pardalis are sparse, but the pattern holds across the genus.
Habitat
Mogurnda pardalis is a freshwater fish native to New Guinea. It inhabits rivers, streams and associated still and slow-moving waters of the lowland and foothill zones, where it lives close to the bottom among submerged vegetation, wood, leaf litter and rocky crevices that provide both shelter and spawning sites. These are warm tropical fresh waters: temperatures in lowland New Guinea are consistently high, with little seasonal variation, and the waters range from clear-running streams to more turbid lowland rivers.
Like all Mogurnda, M. pardalis is a strictly freshwater animal — it does not require added salt and is not an estuarine or brackish-water species, in contrast to some other eleotrids such as Dormitator or Eleotris. It is also not amphidromous: its entire life cycle is completed in fresh water, which is ecologically significant and also means it is in principle breedable in the aquarium without access to salt water or simulated tidal conditions.
Habitat specifics for M. pardalis are not well documented in the open literature; the broader New Guinea gudgeon fauna occupies a wide variety of lowland fresh waters, and the species is expected to tolerate a range of conditions within the tropical freshwater envelope.
Feeding
Mogurnda pardalis is a micro-predator, as is typical of the genus. In the wild it forages on the bottom and among cover, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other benthic invertebrates — as well as opportunistic small fish when body size permits. It hunts by sight and by ambush, lying in wait near shelter before striking.
In the aquarium this translates to a diet of live and frozen foods: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and similar small invertebrates form the staple diet. Gut-loaded live foods are particularly valuable for conditioning a breeding pair. Like most gudgeons, M. pardalis tends to ignore or take poorly to dry flake food and may refuse it entirely; a keeper who attempts to maintain it on flake alone will find the fish declining in condition and colour. Small sinking pellets of good quality may be accepted by an acclimated fish, but live and frozen food should always be the core of the diet.
The large mouth relative to body length is an adaptation for seizing prey, and larger individuals will prey on small fish or fry in the aquarium — tankmates should be chosen accordingly.
Mating
Mogurnda pardalis follows the typical eleotrid resident-freshwater reproductive strategy: it is a cave or substrate spawner in which a male defends a territory and a spawning site. In the genus Mogurnda, males take up a hollow, a crevice, a length of pipe, a clay pot, or any suitable enclosed space and defend it against rival males, courting receptive females with fin displays and body posturing. Because males in this lineage are capable of aggressive territorial defence, keeping multiple males in a small tank without adequate structure and visual barriers leads to conflict.
Courting males intensify in colour and actively display. A receptive female, recognisable by her fuller abdomen, will enter the cave to spawn. The pair complete spawning within the shelter, and the female subsequently leaves or is driven off; from this point the male takes over.
Breeding
Breeding in Mogurnda pardalis is the cave/substrate-spawning mode characteristic of resident freshwater eleotrids: the female deposits adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the chosen cave or hard surface, and the male guards and fans them until hatching. This is a genuine form of paternal care — the male aerates the clutch with fin movements, removes infertile or fungused eggs, and defends the site against intrusion. Incubation time varies with temperature but typically spans several days to a week at tropical temperatures.
Hatching produces small larvae that require fine first foods; in the aquarium, infusoria, paramecia or commercially prepared micro-foods are appropriate initially, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) as the fry grow. Because the whole reproductive cycle is completed in fresh water and the male actively tends the eggs, M. pardalis can be bred in the home aquarium when conditions are right — a meaningful contrast with the amphidromous gobies elsewhere in this atlas, whose larvae must develop at sea and which are consequently wild-collected rather than captive-produced.
Breeding success improves markedly with pre-conditioning on live and frozen foods, stable warm water, and the provision of multiple cave options to allow the male to choose and defend a preferred site. Separation of the female after spawning is not always necessary but may improve egg survival if the male is inexperienced or the tank is cramped.
In the aquarium
Mogurnda pardalis is an intermediate-level freshwater fish best suited to a specialist gudgeon setup rather than a generalist community tank. The tank should be sized to the fish's adult length — a pair or small group needs a tank of at least 20 US gal, and more is better given the males' territorial tendencies. Filtration should be efficient but the flow gentle; the fish is not a powerful swimmer and prefers still or slow water over its natural bottom-dwelling haunts.
Furnishing should emphasise caves and sheltered retreats: clay pots on their sides, lengths of PVC or bamboo pipe, flat stones stacked to form crevices, and driftwood with hiding places. A darker substrate and subdued lighting suit the fish's colouration and reduce stress. Plants are not harmful and add cover, though a dedicated gudgeon tank need not be a formal planted aquarium.
Water parameters should be warm (75–82 °F) and in the neutral to slightly acidic to neutral range typical of lowland New Guinea rivers; the fish does not need salt and should not be kept brackish. It is an accomplished jumper for a bottom-dweller and the tank must be covered. Tankmates should be chosen with care: M. pardalis will eat anything small enough to swallow and will be harassed by or harass larger or more aggressive fish. Other gudgeons of similar size, robust tetras or barbs too large to be prey, and bottom-dwelling catfish that can hold their own are reasonable companions. The fish is not suited to a planted community containing small nano fish.
The most common keeper failure is attempting to maintain this fish on a dry-food diet; feeding live and frozen invertebrates is not optional if the fish is to thrive long-term.
Conservation

Where it does appear, it is likely wild-caught given the limited captive-breeding effort directed at this species, though it is in principle breedable as a resident freshwater cave-spawner. Hobbyists acquiring the fish are encouraged to prioritise captive-bred stock where available and to report any unusual trade volumes to the relevant wildlife authorities, given the uncertainty around its range and abundance.
