Mogurnda pulchra, the beautiful mogurnda, is a sleeper gudgeon — not a true goby — endemic to the lowland streams and swamps of Papua New Guinea. Like all members of the family Eleotridae, it keeps its pelvic fins separate rather than fusing them into the cup-shaped sucker disc that defines the true gobies; the distinction matters because it sets the whole biology and care approach apart from the marine-derived goby lineage. A small carnivore reaching around 3 in, it belongs to a genus of handsomely marked Australasian gudgeons that are male-guarders and substrate-spawners — able to complete their entire life cycle in fresh water and, in principle, captive-breedable by a keeper prepared for their micro-predator diet and need for cover.

Taxonomy & naming

Mogurnda pulchra was described by the German aquarists and ichthyologists Horsthemke and Staeck in 1990 from specimens collected in Papua New Guinea. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the governing authority for valid names — places the genus Mogurnda in the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons. This is a key distinction: despite being marketed as a "goby" in the hobby, M. pulchra is not a true goby. True gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) carry their paired pelvic fins fused into a cup-like sucker disc, a character absent in eleotrids, whose pelvic fins remain free and separate. The sleepers and gudgeons form a sister lineage to the true gobies within the broader Gobioidei assemblage.

The genus Mogurnda encompasses around two dozen species of colourful freshwater gudgeons distributed across Australia and New Guinea, and M. pulchra is one of the New Guinea endemics. The GBIF authority record confirms the combination Mogurnda pulchra Horsthemke & Staeck, 1990 and the family Eleotridae. The species epithet pulchra is Latin for 'beautiful' or 'handsome', an apt name for a genus known for vivid colour patterns. An alternative common name, Moresby mogurnda, reflects the species' occurrence in the Port Moresby region of Papua New Guinea.

Morphology

Mogurnda pulchra is a small, robustly built gudgeon reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in. Like other members of the genus it has two separate dorsal fins, the first spiny, the second soft-rayed, and an overall elongate-fusiform body shape typical of benthic ambush hunters. The pelvic fins are not fused — the clearest morphological marker separating eleotrids from the sucker-bearing true gobies.

The species' name pulchra alludes to its colour pattern, and Mogurnda gudgeons in general are among the more attractive freshwater fishes in the Australasian region, typically showing combinations of red or orange spotting, bars, or streaks on a pale or olive background. Sexual dimorphism is characteristic of the genus: males tend to be larger, more intensely coloured, and develop more extended unpaired fins than females, while females are plumper-bodied when gravid. Precise chromatic details for M. pulchra specifically are not extensively documented in the available literature, but the general Mogurnda pattern applies.

Habitat

Mogurnda pulchra is endemic to Papua New Guinea, where FishBase records it from lowland streams and swamps at elevations up to approximately 1640 ft. iNaturalist records confirm it from the Port Moresby area, consistent with south-eastern Papuan lowlands. It is a strictly freshwater benthopelagic species — not estuarine or brackish — that inhabits still or slow-flowing waters with abundant vegetation, submerged wood, and leaf litter.

FishBase lists water parameters of 73–82 °F and a pH above 7.6 for the species, reflecting the often slightly alkaline and warm nature of New Guinea lowland stream water. These are not blackwater soft-acid conditions; the fish comes from moderately hard, near-neutral to mildly alkaline fresh water. Being a benthic species, it spends much of its time close to or on the substrate, using plant cover, root tangles, and woody debris as refuges.

Feeding

Mogurnda pulchra is a carnivore. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 3.3, consistent with a micro-predator diet of small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other benthic organisms. Like other Mogurnda species it is not an algae grazer and does not subsist on organic detritus.

In the aquarium this translates to a need for small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops, insect larvae, and small crustaceans. Most gudgeons in the genus are reluctant to take dry flake consistently, and a diet of dry food alone will result in poor condition and colour. Offering a varied menu of live and frozen invertebrate foods is the key to keeping the fish in prime health, and it is particularly important when conditioning a pair for breeding.

Mating

Mogurnda pulchra shares the breeding strategy common to the genus: it is a resident freshwater substrate-spawner with male parental care. There is no amphidromous marine larval phase of the kind seen in many stream-dwelling gobies — M. pulchra completes its whole reproductive cycle in fresh water, which is why the species can, in principle, be bred in an aquarium.

A conditioned male takes up a territory centred on a firm surface — a flat stone, a piece of bogwood, the underside of a cave entrance, or the glass of a tank — and displays to gravid females by intensifying his colour and spreading his fins. Courtship involves the male guiding the female to the chosen spawning site, where he repeatedly brushes and cleans the surface before spawning takes place. Data on the congener Mogurnda adspersa and the broader genus indicate that females may lay anywhere from about 20 to 200 adhesive eggs per clutch; clutch size for M. pulchra specifically is not well documented, but falls within this range for the genus.

Breeding

Egg-laying in Mogurnda is adhesive surface-spawning rather than cave specialisation, though the male guards the clutch in situ against all comers. After spawning, the female's role ends and the male takes full charge of the eggs, fanning them continuously with his fins to keep them oxygenated and free of fungus. At 73–82 °F — the species' natural temperature range — the eggs typically hatch within five to seven days. The larvae are small at first and require appropriately tiny first foods.

For aquarium breeders the key steps are conditioning the pair on varied live and frozen foods, providing the male with a flat surface or low cave to spawn on and defend, and giving the fry infusoria or other micro-foods in their earliest days, moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm as they grow. Because the male actively guards the clutch and the cycle is entirely freshwater-based, a well-set-up species tank with stable water quality can yield consistent spawning results. Separating a fry-laden spawning tile into a small rearing vessel is an option when predation or disturbance is a concern.

In the aquarium

Mogurnda pulchra is best kept in a dedicated species tank or with similarly-sized, non-boisterous companions that will not compete aggressively with it for food or territory. A tank of moderate size — suited to a fish reaching 3 in — with warm (73–82 °F), slightly alkaline (pH ~7.6–8.0) fresh water, gentle filtration, and a natural-style setup of plants, bogwood, smooth stones, and leaf litter reflects its lowland Papuan habitat and encourages natural behaviour.

Caves, flat stones, and line-of-sight breaks are important: males can be territorial with one another, and providing multiple refuges and visual barriers reduces aggression in a group. The tank must be covered — gudgeons are competent jumpers and escapes over open gaps are common. Diet should focus on small live and frozen foods rather than dry flake; a flake-only diet results in slow decline. Do not add salt or attempt to keep this species brackish: it is a strictly freshwater fish. With stable conditions, high-quality food, and appropriate cover, M. pulchra is a rewarding and manageable species for a keeper prepared for its carnivore diet.

Conservation

Mogurnda pulchra is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (June 2020 assessment). This reflects the absence of evidence of a major population decline and the species' tolerance of the broad range of lowland freshwater habitats found across southern Papua New Guinea.

Nonetheless, M. pulchra is a range-restricted island endemic, and the lowland streams and swamps of Papua New Guinea face ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and infrastructure development. The species is not widely bred in captivity at commercial scale compared with its congener M. adspersa, so the trade likely draws on wild-caught material. Continued monitoring of habitat condition in its Port Moresby-region range would be prudent, even given the current LC assessment.
