Mogurnda variegata, the variegated gudgeon, is a freshwater sleeper endemic to Lake Kutubu in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea — and, like all members of genus Mogurnda, it is not a true goby at all. It belongs to the family Eleotridae, the sleepers and gudgeons, whose pelvic fins remain separate rather than fusing into the cup-shaped sucker disc that distinguishes the true gobies. Known from this single lake, it is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and represents one of the most range-restricted of all the freshwater gudgeons in this atlas. Small, laterally compressed, and attractively patterned, it inhabits the shallow vegetated margins of its lake home, where it hunts small invertebrates and spawns as a cave or substrate brooder with male parental care.

Taxonomy & naming

Mogurnda variegata was first described by the Scottish-Australian ichthyologist William John Macleay in 1888, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places it in genus Mogurnda, family Eleotridae. This is the crucial first fact about the fish: it is not a true goby. The true gobies (families Gobiidae, Gobionellidae and Oxudercidae) have their pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc; the sleepers and gudgeons of Eleotridae retain separate pelvic fins, and that single character separates the two lineages at a glance. The hobby term 'goby' is used loosely across both families, but Mogurnda sits firmly with the gudgeons.

Genus Mogurnda is the largest of the Australasian gudgeon genera and spans Australia, New Guinea and some adjacent islands. Several species were described under older combinations — early workers placed New Guinea gudgeons in Gobius, Eleotris or the catch-all Vaimosa — but modern classifications consolidate them firmly in Mogurnda. The specific epithet variegata is a Latin participle meaning 'variegated' or 'marked with different colours', alluding to the mottled pattern that distinguishes this species from its congeners.

Within the Mogurnda assemblage, M. variegata appears to be a lacustrine specialist rather than a riverine or estuarine form, and its restriction to a single lake makes it biologically and conservationally exceptional among the New Guinea gudgeons.

Morphology

Mogurnda variegata reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in, placing it among the larger species in its genus. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed with two distinct dorsal fins — the first spiny, the second soft-rayed — a characteristic shape shared across the Eleotridae. The pelvic fins are set apart, not joined, which immediately marks it out from any true goby.

The common name 'variegated gudgeon' reflects a distinctive mottled or marbled patterning across the flanks, produced by irregular blotches and spots over a paler ground colour. This cryptic colouration is typical of the genus and likely functions in camouflage among the aquatic vegetation and substrate of shallow lake margins.

Sexual dimorphism in Mogurnda species generally follows the gudgeon pattern: males tend to be slightly larger and more intensely coloured, and in breeding condition they typically develop heightened colour and behavioural display, while females are rounder-bodied and somewhat plainer when not gravid. Given the scarcity of published morphological detail specific to M. variegata, precise dimorphic characters beyond general size difference are not documented in available sources.

Habitat

Mogurnda variegata is known only from Lake Kutubu, a clear, deep tectonic lake in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, situated at an elevation of approximately 2625 ft above sea level. The lake is renowned for its exceptional water clarity and diversity of endemic aquatic life. Within the lake, M. variegata occupies the shallow, vegetated areas close to the shoreline rather than open water or deeper benthic zones.

Water conditions at Lake Kutubu are warm-temperate to tropical, with surface temperatures in the range of 73–82 °F. The lake is freshwater throughout, fed by highland streams, and shows no salinity influence. Its shallows support a rich growth of aquatic macrophytes which provide shelter, hunting terrain and spawning sites for the gudgeon.

As a strict lake endemic — the smallest possible geographic range for a freshwater fish — M. variegata has no capacity for dispersal to other systems, making it entirely dependent on the ecological integrity of Lake Kutubu.

Feeding

Like all Mogurnda species, M. variegata is a micro-predator. In its shallow, vegetated lake habitat it hunts small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates — that live among the plants and on the substrate. It is a visual, ambush-oriented predator rather than an active pursuit hunter.

In the aquarium, congeners such as M. adspersa accept small live and frozen foods readily: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and similar invertebrate-based feeds. Dry flake is typically taken poorly or refused by Mogurnda species, and a diet relying primarily on flake tends to produce fish in poor condition. Live or frozen foods form the nutritional backbone of successful Mogurnda husbandry, and this principle applies to M. variegata by close analogy.

Mating

Mogurnda species are resident freshwater cave or substrate spawners, a breeding guild that stands in sharp contrast to the amphidromous gobies and some gudgeons whose larvae must develop in the sea. In M. variegata, as in other Mogurnda, the species completes its entire life cycle within fresh water, making captive reproduction theoretically possible in a way that is simply not achievable for amphidromous gobies.

Breeding behaviour extrapolated from the well-documented congener M. adspersa follows a pattern typical of the genus: a male claims and defends a spawning cave, hollow, or firm substrate surface, courting females that enter his territory with fin displays and intensified colouration. He drives females away after spawning and assumes sole guardianship of the eggs. Males of Mogurnda can be aggressive to one another, and in a tank holding multiple males the provision of multiple cave or crevice sites is essential to prevent damaging fights.

Breeding

Based on data from close congeners — particularly M. adspersa — the breeding mode for M. variegata is cave or substrate spawning with male parental care. The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs (approximately 20–40 have been recorded per spawning in M. adspersa, though this varies) on a flat surface, cave ceiling, or underside of a rock or piece of bogwood. Immediately after spawning, the male drives the female away and takes over sole care of the clutch, guarding the site from intruders and fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation until they hatch.

Hatching typically occurs within a week to ten days at tropical temperatures. Fry are initially small and require correspondingly small first foods. The resident freshwater cycle — no marine larval phase — means that a pair kept in a well-furnished aquarium with caves and stable water conditions may spawn without deliberate intervention, though the keeper should monitor the male's guarding behaviour and be prepared to remove either the female or the egg-clutch if aggression becomes severe.

Because M. variegata is Critically Endangered in the wild, any successful captive breeding of this species in specialist collections carries genuine conservation value.

Mogurnda variegata is not in regular trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside of specialist conservation or research collections; its Critically Endangered status and extreme range restriction mean that wild collection is wholly inappropriate. Aquarium requirements follow the Mogurnda template: a warm freshwater setup (73–82 °F) with ample rockwork, bogwood, and robust vegetation to create caves, crevices, and sight-line breaks. A tight-fitting lid is advisable — gudgeons can jump. Males are territorial, particularly around spawning sites, so multiple refugia are necessary in any multi-male setup. The fish is not a community animal in the conventional sense; similarly-sized and non-competing tank mates from equivalent water parameters are the safest companions, though combining them with other species should be approached with care given the size (up to 5 in) and predatory nature of larger Mogurnda.

Diet must centre on live and frozen invertebrate foods. Water quality should be maintained to a high standard, as a lake-adapted endemic is not accustomed to the pollutant loading a stream fish might weather. Freshwater throughout — no salt required or appropriate.

Conservation

Mogurnda variegata is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment), reflecting the catastrophic vulnerability that comes with being a single-lake endemic. Lake Kutubu is its entire world: if the lake is degraded, the species has nowhere to go.

Lake Kutubu faces pressures from human settlement expansion around its shores, agricultural runoff, the introduction of exotic fish species, and historically from petroleum extraction activities in the broader Southern Highlands region. The lake supports a broader community of endemic fish, amphibians and invertebrates, making its conservation an issue well beyond a single gudgeon species, but M. variegata's extreme restriction amplifies the urgency.

The species is not in the established ornamental trade, and the combination of CR status and single-lake endemism means that any wild collection would be indefensible from a conservation standpoint. Conservation priority lies with protecting Lake Kutubu's water quality and catchment integrity and, where feasible, establishing captive assurance populations in specialist institutions. This gudgeon stands among the most imperilled freshwater fish in Papua New Guinea's already species-rich highlands fauna.
