Taxonomy & naming
Rhinogobius brunneus was described by the Dutch zoologists Coenraad Jacob Temminck and Hermann Schlegel in 1845 from Japanese material, entering the literature under the genus Gobius before being transferred to Rhinogobius Gill, 1859 — the snout-gobies, a large, predominantly East Asian genus of freshwater and amphidromous gobies that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, places in the family Oxudercidae. That family, together with the Gobiidae and Gobionellidae, makes up the Gobioidei, and the classification has been revised considerably in recent decades as molecular data have rearranged the group.
The critical distinction for any goby is whether its pelvic fins are fused. In Rhinogobius, as in all true gobies, the pelvic fins form a cup-shaped sucker disc on the belly — the character that separates the Oxudercidae lineage from the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae), whose pelvic fins remain separate. Although the two groups are frequently muddled in the aquarium trade under the label 'goby', they are distinct lineages and the sucker disc is the quickest way to tell them apart.
Rhinogobius is a speciose genus across East and Southeast Asia, and the taxonomy of several regional populations formerly lumped under R. brunneus has been revised; the name as used here applies to the widespread Japanese and Korean populations first described by Temminck and Schlegel.
Morphology
Rhinogobius brunneus is a compact, bottom-hugging fish that reaches 2–3 in standard length. The body is cylindrical and slightly flattened ventrally — a shape suited to life on the bottom of fast-flowing streams. Coloration is predominantly brown to olive-brown across the back and flanks, with irregular darker mottling that provides camouflage against the gravelly and rocky substrates the fish favours; the belly is pale. The species name brunneus is simply Latin for 'brown', naming this overall coloration.
The pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc characteristic of the true gobies, used both to anchor against current and to cling to smooth rock surfaces. The head is blunt and slightly flattened, with large eyes set high, and a broadly rounded mouth angled slightly downward for picking invertebrates from the substrate. Males in breeding condition show more vivid patterning on the cheeks and fins, often developing reddish or orange tones; outside breeding they are similar in colour to females, though males tend to be slightly larger and more robustly built.
Habitat
In the wild, Rhinogobius brunneus occupies clear, fast-running streams and rivers across Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), Korea and the coastal rivers of China, where it lives in the benthic zone — the bottom layer — of well-oxygenated, cool upland and foothill watercourses. The substrates it favours are gravel, cobble and bedrock, with plenty of interstitial spaces among stones that provide refuge and spawning caves. The natural water is cool and clean: water temperatures in the wild run roughly 64–75 °F across the seasons, with colder winters in the more northerly parts of the range.
This is a strictly freshwater, non-amphidromous species. Unlike many of its relatives in the genus — which release larvae downstream to the sea and depend on juvenile fish migrating back upriver — R. brunneus completes its entire life cycle in fresh water, which has direct implications for aquarium care and breeding. Water chemistry is moderate: pH 6.5–7.5, with well-oxygenated, hard-running conditions being the key parameter rather than specific soft or hard water chemistry.
Feeding
Rhinogobius brunneus is a micro-predator. In the wild it forages on the stream bed, picking small crustaceans, copepods, insect larvae (chironomid midges, mayfly nymphs and the like) and other small benthic invertebrates from among stones and gravel. It hunts visually, and its broad, slightly downturned mouth is well adapted to snatching prey from the substrate rather than pursuing it in open water.
In the aquarium, the fish does best on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp, and similar items — fed in quantities it can consume within a few minutes. Like many gobies, it typically refuses dry flake outright or accepts it only grudgingly, and a fish kept solely on dried foods will lose condition and colour over time. Regular offerings of live or frozen invertebrates are particularly important for conditioning a pair for breeding.
Mating
Rhinogobius brunneus is a resident freshwater cave-spawner. Pairs form when a male establishes a territory around a suitable spawning site — a cavity beneath a stone, a crevice in rock or a provided ceramic cave — and courts a ripe female by displaying with spread fins and enhanced coloration on the cheeks and gill covers. The male will defend his territory against rival males, but within a well-furnished aquarium with sufficient line-of-sight breaks and multiple caves, aggression tends to be mild and localised.
Females in breeding condition are noticeably full-bellied. Courtship involves the male leading a receptive female into the chosen cave, where spawning takes place on the ceiling or walls of the hollow. Because this species completes its entire reproductive cycle in fresh water, a conditioned pair in a suitable aquarium will spawn without any special amphidromous-larval provisions — a straightforward advantage over the many Rhinogobius that cannot be bred in captivity.
Breeding
Spawning takes place inside the cave, the female depositing a clutch of small, adhesive eggs on the roof or walls. Once spawning is complete, the female plays no further role; the male takes sole charge, guarding the cave entrance and fanning the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and prevent fungal growth. Incubation at the species' preferred temperature range of 64–75 °F takes approximately 7–10 days to hatching.
The newly hatched fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria or paramecia initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm as the fry develop. Because the male provides genuine attentive care — actively chasing away intruders and fanning throughout incubation — a mature aquarium with stable conditions and a designated cave can produce fry with limited intervention. For higher survival rates, many keepers carefully move the egg-laden cave to a separate, well-aerated rearing container shortly after spawning.
In the aquarium
Rhinogobius brunneus is a rewarding aquarium fish for keepers who can meet its two non-negotiable requirements: cool water and high oxygen. A temperature of 64–75 °F is the correct target range — this is a temperate East Asian species, not a tropical fish, and prolonged warmth above 75 °F will stress it and reduce its lifespan. A power head or spray bar providing good surface agitation and moderate current replicates the well-oxygenated stream conditions the fish needs.
A minimum tank of around 10 US gal suits a pair; more space with additional caves benefits a small group. The aquascape should prioritise cover and spawning structure over open swimming space — smooth river pebbles, cobbles, flat stones and ceramic caves arranged to break sightlines between males. A finer gravel or sand substrate suits the benthic lifestyle. The fish will jump, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. It is generally compatible with other temperate or subtropical stream fish that share its water-temperature requirements, but it is a poor fit for a standard tropical community tank. Diet should emphasise live and frozen small invertebrates; flake is at best a supplement. Given appropriate conditions, it is a hardy and long-lived goby that will breed with little additional encouragement.
Conservation
No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been located for Rhinogobius brunneus, and we record its status as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a category. The species is widely distributed across Japan, Korea and coastal China, and it occurs in numerous river systems across those ranges, which suggests it is not in immediate danger as a whole, though localised populations in heavily modified or polluted rivers may be under pressure.
The primary threats to East Asian stream gobies of this type are the familiar ones: river channelisation, dam construction disrupting flow and connectivity, agricultural runoff, and water extraction reducing base flow in upland streams. Because R. brunneus is a resident freshwater breeder rather than an amphidromous species, it is more tolerant of barriers like weirs than migratory relatives, but it still depends on the clean, well-oxygenated, structurally complex stream habitats that are being degraded across much of East Asia. The fish is not widely traded in the international hobby and is more commonly encountered in Japanese and Korean aquarists' circles than in the Western trade.
