Taxonomy & naming
Rhinogobius duospilus was first described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1935, from material collected in the Hong Kong region, giving it the original combination that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the governing authority for valid names — accepts today. The genus Rhinogobius is a large, diverse assemblage of small Asian river gobies currently placed in the family Oxudercidae, the clade that unites the 'true' gobies and includes the mudskippers. Earlier literature occasionally placed Rhinogobius species under Gobius or other genera, and the broader Gobioidei family boundaries have been repeatedly revised in the molecular era, but the valid genus has remained stable.
The species epithet duospilus derives from the Latin duo (two) and pilus (spot or mark), referring to the paired spot pattern that is one of the fish's identifying features. The common name Hong Kong goby reflects the type locality and is the name most often encountered in the specialist hobby literature, though the species ranges more broadly across streams of Guangdong Province in southern China.
Rhinogobius duospilus is a resident freshwater species — it is not amphidromous. This places it in a different biological category from the cling-gobies (Sicydiinae) and other stream gobies whose hatchlings must reach the sea before returning to fresh water. The whole life cycle of R. duospilus is confined to freshwater streams, which is one of the most important facts to understand about its care and reproductive biology.
Morphology
Rhinogobius duospilus is a compact, somewhat cylindrical goby with a broad, slightly flattened head, a blunt snout and a large mouth suited to seizing small invertebrates from the substrate. Adult size in the wild is modest — most individuals are in the range of 1.5–2.5 in total length, consistent with other members of the genus. The pelvic fins are fully fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that is the defining morphological character of the true gobies (family Oxudercidae and kin), and the fish uses this disc to anchor itself against the current in the fast-flowing streams it inhabits.
Colouration is subdued but intricately patterned: the body is pale brownish to grey with a series of darker blotches along the lateral line and the pair of prominent spots that give the species its name. The fins carry fine spotting and banding, and the first dorsal fin may show an orange or reddish margin in males. Rhinogobius generally exhibit clear sexual dimorphism: males develop more intense and contrasting colouration, especially on the head and first dorsal fin, while females are paler and more cryptically marked. In breeding condition the differences become pronounced, making sexing reasonably straightforward in healthy adults.
Habitat
Rhinogobius duospilus inhabits the fast, clear, well-oxygenated streams and small rivers of southern China and Hong Kong, occupying riffle and run habitat over gravel, cobble and bedrock substrates. These streams are cool to sub-temperate — typical water temperatures are in the range of 61–75 °F depending on season and elevation — and water quality is high, with good clarity and low nutrient loads. The fish is a bottom-dweller, sheltering among stones and cobbles and using its pelvic sucker disc to hold position against the current.
Like most Rhinogobius, R. duospilus is a temperate to sub-temperate species rather than a tropical one. It tolerates and in many localities experiences a distinct cool-water winter period. Aquarists keeping this species in tropical community tanks will find it poorly adapted; it needs cooler, highly oxygenated water with appreciable flow. The streams of southern China where it occurs often carry moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly alkaline water reflecting the geology of the region, though local variation exists.
Feeding
Rhinogobius duospilus is a micro-predator. In its native streams it forages along the bottom for small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae (bloodworm), small crustaceans, copepods, aquatic insect larvae and similar benthic prey. It is an active visual hunter rather than a passive filter-feeder or an algae grazer.
In the aquarium this species, like other Rhinogobius, typically refuses or ignores dry flake food and performs best on a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, small tubifex and similar meaty foods. Feeding only on flake or pellets leads to poor condition, faded colour and reduced breeding activity. Conditioning pairs for spawning requires live or frozen foods offered regularly. Because the species is small, food particle size should be appropriate — fine frozen bloodworm or similar-sized items work well.
Mating
Rhinogobius duospilus is a resident freshwater cave-spawner with male parental care — the reproductive strategy shared by most of the small freshwater-resident Rhinogobius. Because the species is not amphidromous, there is no marine larval phase, and the entire cycle from courtship through hatching takes place in the aquarium without any sea-water interval. This makes captive breeding genuinely possible in a way that it is not for amphidromous gobies.
Males are territorial and defend a cave or crevice — a hollow beneath a stone, a ceramic pipe section or a coconut-shell cave in the aquarium — against rival males. A conditioned male displays intensely to females passing near his cave, raising and spreading his fins and intensifying his colour to advertise his quality and ownership of the site. When a ripe female is receptive she enters the cave and spawning occurs on the interior surfaces — the roof or walls — of the retreat.
Breeding
Spawning takes place inside the defended cave, where the female lays a clutch of small adhesive eggs attached to the substrate surface. After spawning the female leaves and takes no further part in brood care. The male remains in the cave, guarding the eggs attentively and fanning them with his fins to maintain water circulation and prevent fungal colonisation — genuine paternal care that is characteristic of the genus.
At the cool water temperatures this species prefers (around 68–72 °F), incubation may take ten days to two weeks before the eggs hatch. The newly hatched fry are tiny and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods before progressing to nauplii of brine shrimp and microworm. Separating the cave into a clean rearing vessel after fertilisation can improve fry survival rates. Breeders in temperate countries sometimes find that a seasonal cool period — dropping water temperature to around 61–64 °F for several weeks in autumn or winter — triggers spawning readiness in spring, mimicking the natural stream conditions of southern China.
In the aquarium
Rhinogobius duospilus is a specialist fish suited to keepers who can provide the cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water it requires. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in with efficient filtration that generates good surface agitation and current, decorated with smooth cobbles, flat stones and a few caves, suits a pair or a small group well. The substrate should be fine gravel or sand — the fish forages across the bottom and benefits from natural-looking substrate that lets it display its searching behaviour.
Temperature is the critical parameter: keep this species between 18 and 75 °F; above 79 °F it becomes stressed and prone to disease. It is not a tropical community fish and does not belong in a warm community with discus, angels or tropical tetras. Good tank-mates are other cool-water species — white cloud mountain minnows, small hillstream loaches or temperate danios — that can tolerate or prefer the same conditions. A tightly fitting lid is advisable: like many gobies R. duospilus is capable of jumping. Males are territorial with conspecifics and will spar over caves, so provide multiple retreats if keeping more than one male, with sight-breaks between territories.
This species does not require or tolerate salt. It is a fully freshwater fish throughout its life, and brackish conditions are inappropriate.
Conservation
Rhinogobius duospilus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). Data on its population status and trends are sparse. It is a small-bodied stream endemic of southern China and Hong Kong — a region experiencing rapid urbanisation, intensive agriculture, and significant modification of stream habitats through channelisation, damming and water abstraction. These are the same pressures that have driven range contractions in other endemic stream fishes across Guangdong Province.
The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is not a commercially important export species, so collection pressure is likely low. The greater concern is habitat quality: the clear, fast, cool streams it depends on are sensitive to the elevated temperatures, sedimentation and nutrient loading that accompany land-use change. No specific conservation actions targeting this species are on record, and its true range and population size remain inadequately surveyed. A formal IUCN assessment would be valuable, particularly as freshwater fish diversity in southern China's streams continues to come under pressure from development and climate-driven hydrological change.
