Rhinogobius davidi is a small, benthic true goby of the family Oxudercidae, endemic to the river drainages of eastern China. Like all true gobies it carries pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc — the character that separates the gobies from the superficially similar sleepers and gudgeons — and like most of its genus it is a resident freshwater cave-spawner whose male guards and fans adhesive eggs until they hatch. In a family that is overwhelmingly marine, the freshwater Rhinogobius gobies of East Asia stand out as genuine riverine specialists, hugging the gravel and stones of cool, fast-flowing streams with the sucker disc that gives them purchase against the current. At a maximum of 2 in standard length, R. davidi is a small-stream nano fish, temperate in its water preferences and requiring cooler, oxygen-rich conditions that set it firmly apart from the tropical community-tank mainstream.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius davidi was described by the French ichthyologists Henri Émile Sauvage and Pierre Marie Heude Dabry de Thiersant in 1874, with type locality in China. The species epithet davidi is an eponym, commemorating the French Lazarist missionary and naturalist Père Armand David, who collected natural history specimens across China in the second half of the nineteenth century and whose name appears on numerous Asian species. The original description was published under a now-defunct generic combination, but the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places the species in Rhinogobius, the large and diverse genus of small Asian stream gobies currently assigned to the family Oxudercidae.

Molecular data from mitochondrial genome studies confirm both the taxonomic validity of R. davidi and its placement within Oxudercidae, the family that contains the true gobies alongside the mudskippers. The distinction from the sleepers and gudgeons (Eleotridae) is anatomical: Rhinogobius, like all true gobies, carries its pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc. The sleepers and gudgeons keep their pelvic fins separate and free. Gobies are overwhelmingly a marine lineage — the vast majority of the more than 2,000 known species live in the sea or in brackish coastal waters — and the freshwater Rhinogobius of East Asia are among the most species-rich exceptions to that rule. The genus encompasses a large number of named and unnamed forms from Japan, Korea, China, and neighbouring regions, and species limits within the group continue to be revised as molecular phylogenetics catches up with the morphological diversity.

Morphology

Rhinogobius davidi is a small, dorsoventrally flattened goby reaching a maximum of 2 in standard length in males; females are typically smaller. The body is elongate, and like all true gobies the pelvic fins are united into a concave sucker disc on the underside of the fish — the character most easily seen when the fish rests on the bottom, which it does almost constantly. The head is broad and somewhat depressed, with large, dorsally placed eyes and a wide mouth suited to ambushing small invertebrates.

Coloration in Rhinogobius follows the genus-wide pattern of pale or mottled brown to grey ground colour with darker bars or blotches along the flanks, providing camouflage against the gravel and rock substrates the fish favours. Breeding males typically develop more intense pigmentation, and some regional populations may differ in pattern. Sexual dimorphism becomes apparent in conditioned adults: males are larger, often more brightly coloured and more boldly patterned, and develop more extended dorsal and caudal fins; females are smaller, with rounder, fuller bodies when ripe. The sucker disc is visible on both sexes and is functional — the fish uses it to hold station against flowing water.

Habitat

Rhinogobius davidi is endemic to the Oujiang, Qiantang, and Yangtze river drainages in eastern China — a range centred on Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, with possible occurrence further along the Yangtze system. Within those drainages it occupies the smaller streams and tributary watercourses rather than the main channels: benthic habitat on gravel, cobble, and rock in clean, flowing water with high dissolved oxygen.

The species is strictly freshwater and non-amphidromous — unlike the cling-gobies and many other stream-dwelling gobioids, it does not require a marine larval phase, and its whole life cycle can be completed in fresh water. Temperature data place the species in a temperate to warm-temperate range: FishBase records a tolerance window of approximately 39–77 °F, with breeding activity commencing only above 68 °F. This makes it a fundamentally different proposition from tropical Rhinogobius — it is a cool-water fish that appreciates a winter cool-down and is not suited to permanent tropical temperatures. Clear, well-oxygenated, moving fresh water is the baseline requirement.

Feeding

Rhinogobius davidi is a micro-predator with a trophic level of approximately 3.2, reflecting a diet centred on small aquatic invertebrates taken from the benthos: insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and similar prey encountered at the stream bottom. The wide, subterminal mouth and the sit-and-wait hunting posture — pressed to the substrate on the sucker disc — are typical of the genus and suited to ambushing prey in the current.

In the aquarium this translates to a diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworms (chironomid larvae), mosquito larvae, Artemia (brine shrimp), Daphnia, and similar items. Like most Rhinogobius, R. davidi is likely to show reluctance toward dry flake or pellets, especially initially, and conditioning the fish for breeding calls for high-quality live or frozen feeds. Variety and movement are the keys: a fish kept exclusively on a single dry food tends to lose condition, while a regularly varied diet of small meaty foods keeps colour and health strong.

Mating

Rhinogobius davidi is a resident cave-spawner — one of the group of gobies that completes the entire breeding cycle in fresh water without a marine larval phase, making captive breeding genuinely possible. Breeding in the wild begins when water temperatures rise above approximately 68 °F, consistent with the species' temperate distribution. Males establish and defend small territories around a suitable spawning site: a hollow, a crevice between rocks, or the underside of a flat stone where the eggs will be sheltered from the current.

Courtship behaviour follows the pattern typical of the genus: the territorial male intensifies his coloration and engages in lateral displays and fin-spreading toward ripe females. Because males are territorial and will compete with one another, keeping multiple males in a small tank risks sustained aggression; a ratio of one male to one or more females, with adequate visual breaks provided by rocks and decor, reduces conflict. A female that is ready to spawn is visibly fuller-bodied, and the male will lead her into or beneath the chosen spawning structure.

Breeding

The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the underside of a stone or the inner surface of a cave or crevice — research suggests a female can produce upward of 100 eggs in a single spawning event, with the potential to spawn repeatedly through the breeding season. Once spawning is complete, the female's role is finished; the male takes over as sole guardian of the clutch.

The male guards the eggs attentively, fanning them with his fins to maintain oxygenation and chasing away any intruders, until they hatch. Hatching time will vary with temperature but in temperate Rhinogobius is typically several days to roughly a week. Because the entire cycle takes place in fresh water and the male's parental care is genuine and sustained, R. davidi belongs to the group of Rhinogobius that can be bred in the home aquarium — unlike amphidromous gobies whose hatchlings must reach the sea to complete development. Separating the spawning cave (with eggs) into a dedicated fry-rearing container after spawning, where water quality can be controlled and fry fed appropriately, is the standard approach for maximising fry survival. First foods for the tiny fry should be micro-sized: infusoria, rotifers, or similarly minute live foods.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius davidi is an engaging nano fish best kept in a species or species-companion tank designed around its temperate, flowing-water requirements. A tank of 15–20 US gal is adequate for a pair or a trio; fill it with smooth rounded gravel or fine cobble, provide flat stones and small cave structures for spawning and shelter, and run a powerhead or canister filter to produce noticeable current and keep dissolved oxygen high. The key point that beginners sometimes miss: this is a temperate fish. It should be kept at 59–72 °F in normal maintenance and allowed to experience cooler conditions in winter; sustained tropical temperatures of 79–82 °F are harmful, not beneficial, and will shorten the fish's life. A heater is often unnecessary in a cool room; in a warm climate a chiller or a fan may be needed.

Rhinogobius are benthic and territorial: males will dispute ownership of caves and sight lines, so a single male per tank or a well-structured tank with multiple hiding places is advisable. The fish will ignore most midwater species and can be kept with other cool-water, non-competing companions, but the tank should provide cover at the bottom where the gobies live. Because the species is a micro-predator that may refuse dry food, plan on maintaining a supply of frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, or Artemia as the staple diet. The tank must have a secure lid — Rhinogobius are capable jumpers, and losses to an uncovered tank are common. Water quality must be kept high, as the species comes from clean streams and does not tolerate stale or heavily polluted conditions.

Conservation

Rhinogobius davidi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; we record it as Not Evaluated. The species is endemic to a relatively restricted set of river drainages in eastern China — the Oujiang, Qiantang, and Yangtze systems — which means that any deterioration in water quality, habitat alteration, or large-scale river engineering within that range has the potential to affect the entire wild population.

The pressures on small Chinese stream fish are well documented: agricultural and urban run-off, damming of tributaries, sand extraction, and invasive species all operate across the drainages R. davidi inhabits. Because the species is a resident breeder that does not rely on a marine phase, locally extinct populations cannot be recolonised from the sea, making basin-level water quality important. There is no indication of a significant aquarium trade impact on the species, though wild-collected specimens do appear occasionally in the specialist goby hobby. The absence of a formal IUCN assessment means the actual population trend is unknown; given its endemic range and the pressures on eastern Chinese freshwater habitats, a precautionary approach is warranted.
