Rhinogobius candidianus, the Taiwan brook goby, is a small freshwater goby endemic to the island of Taiwan, where it inhabits cool, fast-flowing mountain streams draining the island's western slopes. It is a true goby — family Oxudercidae — and carries the pelvic fins fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc that distinguishes real gobies from the sleeper gudgeons, a feature used in the wild to brace against the current of turbulent hill streams. Like all true gobies, it belongs to a predominantly marine lineage; its permanent residence in fresh water is the exception, not the rule. A subtly attractive, chestnut-patterned fish that rarely exceeds 3 in, it is valued in specialist circles as a cool-water, high-oxygen goby with genuine cave-spawning behaviour — the male guards and fans a clutch of adhesive eggs in a crevice or hollow until they hatch — and it can be bred in the aquarium by keepers who can meet its demand for cold, well-oxygenated, flowing water.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius candidianus was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1908. The original description placed it in the genus Ctenogobius, which was then a broadly applied catch-all for small Indo-Pacific gobies; as the systematics of the group were refined, the species was transferred to Rhinogobius, the large East Asian river-goby genus now placed in the family Oxudercidae. Ctenogobius itself is now restricted to a group of mostly American gobies, so the old combination Ctenogobius candidianus is no longer current. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and GBIF both confirm the valid name as Rhinogobius candidianus (Regan, 1908) in Oxudercidae.

Rhinogobius is a diverse and taxonomically active genus with dozens of species across China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and mainland Southeast Asia. Many species are morphologically similar and identification can be challenging; molecular phylogenetic work on R. candidianus has resolved four genetically distinct clades within the island of Taiwan, recognised as evolutionarily significant units with conservation relevance, but all are currently treated as one species. The species epithet candidianus refers to the Candi (Candidius) river system of western Taiwan, one of the original collection localities.

Morphology

Rhinogobius candidianus is a compact, torpedo-shaped goby with a broad, somewhat depressed head, large eyes set high on the skull, and the two dorsal fins characteristic of gobies. Adult males can reach around 3 in in total length; females are noticeably smaller. The ground colour is pale buff to tan, overlaid with a series of dark brown blotches along the flanks and several diffuse bars across the body; the cheeks often carry iridescent blue-green spots or dashes in breeding males. The fins are marked with rows of spots forming faint bands.

The most diagnostically important character — and the one that places this species among the true gobies rather than the sleeper gudgeons — is the pelvic disc: the pelvic fins are fully fused into a concave, cup-shaped sucker that the fish uses to grip smooth rock surfaces in fast current. This structure is absent in the eleotrids (sleepers and gudgeons), where the pelvic fins remain separate. Males are larger, more vividly marked, and develop a slightly thicker head profile than females; females are smaller and somewhat plainer, with a rounder belly when gravid.

Habitat

Rhinogobius candidianus is endemic to Taiwan. Its native range is the river systems draining the western side of the Central Mountain Range — watersheds in the north, northwest, west, and south of the island. It has also been recorded from east Taiwan, but genetic and distribution data indicate that eastern populations result from human-mediated translocation rather than natural colonisation; in some eastern rivers the introduced populations have become the dominant goby, raising concern about displacement of native species.

Within its range the species occupies cool, fast-flowing upland and hill streams: riffles, runs, and pools over gravel and cobble substrate, with clear, highly oxygenated water. These are primary freshwater habitats — the species does not enter brackish or marine water and is not amphidromous; its whole life cycle is completed in fresh water. Water temperatures in these mountain streams are markedly cooler than in the lowland tropics: values of 57–68 °F cover the typical annual range, and even summer temperatures rarely rise far above the lower twenties. This cold, oxygen-rich, flowing environment is the single most important parameter to replicate in captivity.

Feeding

Rhinogobius candidianus is a micro-predator. In its native streams it forages along the stream bottom, picking small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae (bloodworms), small crustaceans, aquatic insect nymphs and other benthic prey — from the substrate and from crevices among stones. It hunts by sight and by the current-sensing lateral line, characteristic of a goby adapted to working the bottom of fast, turbulent water.

In the aquarium it should be fed a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, daphnia, brine shrimp, small aquatic worms, and similar items. Most specimens will take good-quality sinking pellets or wafers in time, but dry food alone is inadequate for conditioning and long-term health; live and frozen foods are especially important when attempting to bring the fish into breeding condition. Its mouth is small, so food items should be appropriately sized, and competition from faster or larger tankmates should be managed so that the goby gets its share.

Mating

Rhinogobius candidianus is a resident freshwater cave-spawner with male parental care — a breeding strategy shared by most members of the genus and common among the small resident gobies of East Asia. The species completes its entire reproductive cycle in fresh water; it is not amphidromous, and its larvae do not require a marine phase. This distinguishes it sharply from the amphidromous stream gobies (such as Stiphodon and Sicyopterus) whose hatchlings must wash to the sea and return as post-larvae — and that distinction is the reason R. candidianus can be bred in the aquarium when so many stream gobies cannot.

Courting males intensify their markings and defend a suitable cave or crevice — a hollow under a stone, a length of pipe, a coconut shell, or a narrow gap between rocks. The male actively courts passing females, displaying with spread fins and chasing rivals away. A receptive, gravid female is led into the cave or crevice to spawn. After egg-laying the female is evicted; from this point the male alone is responsible for the brood.

Breeding

Once a pair has spawned, the female lays a batch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of the chosen cave or crevice, then leaves. The male remains in continuous attendance, guarding the entrance against intruders and fanning the eggs vigorously with his pectoral fins to maintain a flow of oxygenated water over them — a critical behaviour given the species' requirement for high dissolved oxygen. Incubation time depends on temperature; in the cool water this species prefers it is likely around ten days to two weeks.

Breeding in captivity requires replicating the key parameters: cool water (Practical Fishkeeping notes breeding success at 75–77 °F as an upper bound, with normal maintenance well below this), strong aeration and flow, and several cave spawning sites among rocks or pipe. The tank should be mature, with stable water quality and negligible ammonia and nitrite. Fry are small at hatch and require infusoria or other microscopic first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Because the male guards the eggs diligently, a species-only or species-appropriate tank without egg-eating competitors gives the best outcome.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius candidianus is a specialist's fish, rewarding to keep but unforgiving if its core requirements are ignored. The non-negotiable is water temperature: this is a cool-water, subtropical species from mountain streams that typically run at 57–68 °F. A standard tropical aquarium at 79–82 °F will stress or kill it over time; the keeper needs either an aquarium cooler or a naturally cool room, and must accept that this goby cannot be mixed with tropical community fish. Strong filtration, vigorous surface agitation, and ideally a powerhead to create current complete the environmental brief.

Tank decoration should mimic a cobble-bed stream: smooth stones and flat rocks creating caves and overhangs, a sand-and-gravel substrate, minimal or no fine-leaved plants (which fare poorly in high flow), and good open swimming space in the current. Males are territorial and will spar over caves, so multiple refuges should be provided, with adequate line-of-sight breaks. A covered tank is advisable, as gobies are capable jumpers. The species feeds only on live or frozen invertebrate foods and does not thrive on dry food alone. When these conditions are met — cool, fast, oxygen-rich water; meaty food; caves — R. candidianus is a hardy, interesting goby that will spawn readily and repay close observation. It is not a fish for mixed tropical community tanks.

Conservation

Rhinogobius candidianus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; we record it as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than guess at a status. Despite the absence of a formal assessment, the species faces real conservation pressures that are documented in the primary literature. As a freshwater endemic restricted to the rivers of Taiwan, it is sensitive to habitat loss through dam construction, water extraction, stream channelisation, and the degradation of montane watersheds.

Of particular concern is the documented translocation of R. candidianus from its native western Taiwan watersheds into the eastern river systems, apparently through human introduction via bait releases or deliberate stocking. Genetic surveys have found that introduced eastern populations now dominate some rivers there, and the low genetic diversity within certain clades raises questions about long-term resilience. Four evolutionarily significant genetic units have been identified within the species, meaning that conservation management should consider intra-specific diversity rather than treating the species as a single interchangeable population. In the aquarium trade the species appears occasionally as a specialist item; buyers should seek captive-bred stock, and collection should not draw from areas of already limited distribution.
