Rhinogobius mizunoi is a small, freshwater true goby — family Oxudercidae — described in 2017 from the cool, fast-flowing streams of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Like all true gobies, it carries the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, the character that unites the gobies against the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae) whose pelvics remain separate. It is endemic to a tiny range in central Honshu, an East Asian temperate specialist that prefers cold, well-oxygenated mountain water and has never been recorded beyond Japan. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, reflecting the small range and vulnerability of its stream habitats to modification. It is a resident cave-spawner in the mould of the wider Rhinogobius genus: the male guards the clutch in a rock crevice, a character that makes captive breeding possible when conditions are met.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius mizunoi was formally described in 2017 by Suzuki, Shibukawa and Aizawa in the Bulletin of the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum (Natural Science), vol. 46, pp. 79–95. Six specimens from the type locality in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, formed the holotype series. The Catalog of Fishes places it in the genus Rhinogobius and the family Oxudercidae, which together with Gobiidae and Gobionellidae constitutes the true-goby assemblage of the order Gobiiformes. This is a point of practical significance: Rhinogobius is not related to the sleeper gudgeons (Eleotridae) or the mud sleepers (Butidae), even though small Japanese and Chinese fish of all three groups share a similar bottom-hugging build. The true gobies — including Rhinogobius — have the pelvic fins fused into a disc; the sleepers do not.

The species is named in honour of Nobuhiko Mizuno, an ichthyologist at Ehime University who made major contributions to the taxonomy of Japanese freshwater gobies. Several Rhinogobius species in Japan share a similar build and cryptic coloration, and the 2017 description relied on a combination of meristic counts (notably 13–18 predorsal scales) and the absence of the vertical dark bars or spots on the caudal fin that mark related species. No subspecies or geographic variants are recognised.

Morphology

Rhinogobius mizunoi is a small goby reaching a maximum recorded total length of approximately 2.5 in, typical of the smaller members of a genus that spans roughly 1.5–4 in depending on species. The body is elongate and slightly compressed, as in most benthic gobies, and the head is broad and somewhat flattened — an adaptation to life in fast, rocky stream runs. The pelvic fins are fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc characteristic of true gobies, enabling the fish to grip substrate in powerful current.

The diagnostic meristic character is the predorsal scale count of 13–18, and the caudal fin lacks the vertical dark lines or spots found on several similar Japanese Rhinogobius. Coloration follows the broadly cryptic pattern of the genus: a pale to tan body with darker reticulations or mottling that provides camouflage over the stony streambed. Sexual dimorphism has not been comprehensively described for this species, but in the Rhinogobius genus generally, breeding males show intensified markings on the head and fins and are somewhat larger and more boldly patterned than females.

Habitat

Rhinogobius mizunoi is a freshwater specialist known from cool, swift streams in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Honshu, Japan. This is an East Asian temperate region: summers are warm but not tropical, and winters can be cold, so the species is adapted to a much wider temperature range than a tropical goby. The genus as a whole tolerates temperatures from as low as approximately 39 °F to about 77 °F, and the cool-stream preference means high dissolved-oxygen levels and strong current are central requirements — the sucker disc allows the fish to hold station on exposed rock faces in fast water.

The stream profile is rocky to sandy-gravelly, and the fish occupies areas where flat stones and crevices offer cover and spawning sites. As an obligate freshwater resident it does not undertake amphidromous migrations to the sea: the entire life cycle, from spawning through juvenile development to adulthood, takes place within the freshwater stream. This makes the species's habitability wholly dependent on the integrity of its limited number of home streams.

Feeding

Rhinogobius mizunoi is a micro-predator, consistent with the broader genus. In the wild, it forages on the streambed and among rock surfaces for small aquatic invertebrates: insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms and other benthic invertebrates. The genus is an opportunistic carnivore, not an algae grazer.

In the aquarium, the genus does not typically accept dry flake readily; a diet built around live and frozen foods — bloodworm, mosquito larvae, Artemia, Daphnia and Mysis — is both preferred and necessary for keeping the fish in good condition. All foods should be sinking or bottom-delivered; this is not a surface or mid-water feeder. Live and frozen foods become especially important when conditioning a pair for breeding, and fish fed only dry food typically lose condition and resist spawning. The small mouth means food particle size should be appropriate.

Mating

Rhinogobius mizunoi is a resident freshwater cave-spawner, following the pattern that characterises most members of the genus and distinguishes them sharply from the amphidromous Sicydiinae and other stream gobies that must export larvae to the sea. In the wild, spawning in Rhinogobius occurs primarily in spring and early summer (roughly April to July in Japan), timed to warmer water temperatures following the cold winter period.

Males establish and defend a cavity — a space beneath a flat rock, a crevice between stones, or a similar enclosed space — and court females by displaying intensified markings. A conditioned male will intensify colour and posture persistently in the presence of a ripe female. Because the species is a resident with no amphidromous phase, pairs can be assembled and conditioned in captivity, and spawning can occur without any marine interval being required.

Breeding

Breeding Rhinogobius mizunoi follows the cave-spawning mode of the genus: the female enters the guarded cavity and deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the underside of the chosen stone or rock surface. The male then takes sole parental responsibility, guarding the cave entrance against intruders and fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and prevent fungal infection until they hatch.

In the aquarium, successful spawning requires a well-established pair, live and frozen conditioning foods, and the provision of suitable cave structures — flat stones with a gap beneath, lengths of PVC pipe, or smooth-bottomed caves. The water should be cool (keeping temperatures below 72 °F is important for a temperate species), clean and well-oxygenated with good flow over the spawning site. A cool-down period mimicking winter, followed by a gradual temperature rise into the mid-teens or low twenties Celsius, can trigger seasonal spawning behaviour. Because the species is a resident (non-amphidromous) spawner, captive breeding is in principle achievable, though this is not a widely kept or commonly bred species and detailed captive-breeding records are sparse.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius mizunoi is a rare and specialised fish for the experienced keeper rather than a beginner's goby. Its demands are not extreme, but they are specific: the tank must provide cool, highly oxygenated, flowing water — temperatures in the range of roughly 50–72 °F and a powerhead or filter outlet directed to create current over a rocky, sandy bottom. A covered tank is essential, as gobies of this genus are capable jumpers.

The aquascape should include flat stones stacked to create crevices and caves, open sandy patches for foraging, and minimal aggressive tankmates. Males of this and related Rhinogobius can be territorial with one another; in a small tank a single male with one or more females, or a species-only setup with ample line-of-sight breaks, works best. The fish should not be kept with tropical fish at their normal temperatures — high temperatures cause stress and oxygen depletion quickly. Diet is exclusively live and frozen small foods; flake should not form the staple. Given the species's Vulnerable status and limited availability in the trade, sourcing should be from reputable captive-breeding sources where they exist.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Rhinogobius mizunoi as Vulnerable (VU). The primary drivers of concern are the species's extremely small range — currently known only from streams in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Honshu, Japan — and the ongoing vulnerability of those streams to habitat modification: channelisation, concrete lining of riverbeds and banks, agricultural run-off, water abstraction and changes to flow regime. Many small Japanese stream gobies face similar pressures as land-use and infrastructure development continue to alter mountain and foothill stream systems.

As a freshwater-resident species with no amphidromous dispersal to reconnect isolated populations, any local extirpation is difficult to reverse naturally. The species is not widely kept or bred in the aquarium trade; it has no notable commercial fishery. Conservation of its Shizuoka stream habitats — maintaining natural substrates, flow dynamics and water quality — is the most direct path to securing its future. Given its 2017 description date, monitoring of the population status and distribution is still in an early stage.
