Taxonomy & naming
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus was described by Lee and Chang in 1996 from material taken in the Tadu River, Taichung County, Taiwan, which remains the type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats it as a valid species under the current genus Rhinogobius, placing it in the family Oxudercidae — the true gobies. The holotype is held at the Academia Sinica Institute of Zoology, Taipei (ASIZP 56640). No synonyms or alternative genus combinations have been documented for this species.
Rhinogobius is the most speciose genus of freshwater gobies in East Asia, with well over a hundred described species distributed across China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam, and the taxonomy of the group is actively revised as molecular and morphological tools improve. Rhinogobius rubromaculatus belongs to the gobies in the strict sense: a member of the family Oxudercidae (which incorporates the former Gobiidae core), carrying the fused pelvic disc that is the hallmark of the true gobies. This is the character that separates true gobies — overwhelmingly a marine and estuarine lineage — from the sleepers (Eleotridae) and gudgeons, whose pelvic fins remain separate. The vast majority of gobies live in the sea; freshwater-resident species such as R. rubromaculatus are the exception, not the rule.
Morphology
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus is a slender, bottom-dwelling goby reaching approximately 2 in in standard length. The body is elongate and somewhat cylindrical anteriorly, tapering toward the tail, with the blunt head and large eyes typical of the genus. The common and scientific names refer to the species' most distinctive marking: a pattern of red or reddish-orange spots on the body and fins that is particularly vivid in dominant males, providing a straightforward field character within the Rhinogobius species flock.
As in all true gobies, the pelvic fins are fused along their inner rays to form a cup-like sucker disc on the belly — the feature by which any Rhinogobius can immediately be separated from superficially similar gudgeons or loaches. The fused disc is used to anchor the fish against the current on exposed rocky substrate. Sexual dimorphism is typical for the genus: males are more intensely coloured, with bolder red spotting and more elaborate fin patterning, while females tend to be paler and somewhat smaller.
Habitat
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus is endemic to Taiwan, where it has been recorded from river basins spanning the full length of the island — from the Tamshuei basin in the north to the Kaoping basin in the south — at elevations from sea level up to approximately 1,656 ft. It occupies low to mid-elevation tributary streams and headwaters rather than the larger main-channel rivers, favouring sites with slow to moderate current, rocky or pebbly substrate and clear, well-oxygenated water.
This is a temperate to subtropical species, and its thermal tolerance reflects that: the Seriously Fish care profile records a preferred temperature range of 64–75 °F, well below the tropical defaults often applied to hobbyist fish. The streams it inhabits are clean and clear with moderate hardness (roughly 90–215 ppm) and a pH range spanning mildly acidic to mildly alkaline (6.0–8.0). Like many Rhinogobius, it is strictly a freshwater animal — no salt tolerance or brackish habit has been documented — and it is not amphidromous: the whole of its life cycle takes place in fresh water.
Feeding
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus is an opportunistic carnivore and micro-predator, picking small invertebrates from the rocky stream bed in the manner typical of the genus. In the wild its diet consists of small aquatic insects and their larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other tiny benthic invertebrates associated with the rocky substrates it favours.
In the aquarium it should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen meaty foods: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), mosquito larvae, Artemia (brine shrimp), Daphnia and Mysis shrimp are all accepted. Like most Rhinogobius, it tends to ignore or refuse dry flake foods, and a fish maintained on flake alone will lose condition. Feeding a range of live and frozen items, sized to the relatively small mouth, keeps the fish in good health and colour and is especially important when conditioning a pair for breeding.
Mating
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus is a non-diadromous, resident freshwater spawner — meaning both sexes live and breed entirely in fresh water, with no marine larval phase. This places it in a different reproductive category from the many amphidromous gobies (such as the Sicydiinae cling-gobies) whose hatchlings must reach the sea to develop; those species cannot be captive-bred, but R. rubromaculatus can complete its full reproductive cycle in the aquarium.
Spawning in Taiwanese streams appears to follow a seasonal pattern, with peaks recorded from May to August and again from December to March. In the aquarium, conditioned fish may spawn year-round. Males establish and defend small territories centred on a suitable cave, crevice or hollow. A ripe female is courted into this site; courtship involves colour intensification and fin display by the male, and females in breeding condition show a full, rounded abdomen.
Breeding
Breeding follows the pattern common to resident Rhinogobius: the female deposits adhesive eggs on the ceiling of the chosen cave or crevice — typical clutch sizes range from roughly 20 to 100 eggs — and then departs. From that point the male takes sole responsibility for the clutch, guarding the cave entrance against intruders and fanning the eggs with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen supply. Incubation takes approximately 9–11 days at the temperatures this species prefers.
For aquarium breeding, a species tank or a tank shared only with non-competitive, non-predatory fish is advisable. A cave spawning site — a smooth stone with an overhang, a short length of ceramic tube or a purpose-made cave — should be provided. Clean, well-oxygenated, moderately cool water (64–75 °F) is important; the species requires adequate dissolved oxygen, reflecting the well-aerated stream conditions of its native range. Once hatched, the fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods such as infusoria or micro-worms before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus is an attractive and manageable aquarium fish, but its requirements differ meaningfully from those of tropical community species and it is not a fish for a warm, general-purpose setup. The most important parameter to get right is temperature: this is a cool-water, subtropical Taiwanese stream fish, comfortable at 64–75 °F, and it should not be kept at the tropical 77–82 °F that suits most freshwater fish in the hobby. An unheated aquarium in a temperate room, or a chilled display, suits it well.
The tank should be set up to replicate the stony headwater streams the species inhabits: smooth rocks and pebbles, moderate water movement and excellent filtration for high dissolved oxygen, and several caves or overhangs that give males spawning sites and retreat from one another. A lid is advisable, as gobies are capable jumpers. The species should not be kept with much larger or aggressive fish; it coexists best with other small, non-predatory species that share its cool-water needs. It does not require salt, and brackish additions would be inappropriate. A diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods is the key to maintaining colour and condition. Meeting its cool-water and oxygen requirements is the principal challenge; hobbyists in temperate climates may find this simpler than those in warmer regions.
Conservation
Rhinogobius rubromaculatus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). No formal conservation category is available, and any status assigned without an assessment would be speculative. The species is a Taiwan endemic with a range confined to the island's freshwater stream systems — a distribution that makes it inherently vulnerable to localised habitat degradation, though the extent of any population trends is undocumented.
The broader pressures facing freshwater fish in Taiwan's river systems include land-use change, water abstraction, riparian development and the impacts of typhoon-driven flood events on small headwater streams. Because the species occupies both lowland and mid-elevation streams it may face a range of these pressures across its range. A formal IUCN assessment would require field survey data on population size, distribution trends and threats that are not currently compiled in a publicly available form. In the meantime, hobbyists keeping this species should seek out captive-bred stock where available.
