Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a small, stream-dwelling true goby from Fujian Province in eastern China, described in 2000 from the upper Mulan River basin in Xianyou County. Like all true gobies it belongs to the family Oxudercidae and carries the hallmark of the lineage: the pelvic fins fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc that anchors the fish against current on the stony riverbed — a feature that separates it from the sleepers and gudgeons that share its superficial look. Gobies as a group are overwhelmingly marine; Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is one of the narrow minority that has colonised fresh water permanently, spending its entire life in the swift, cool hill streams of south-eastern China. It reaches only about 1.5 in in standard length and is notable among its congeners for a striking pattern of orange-yellow ground colour overlaid with dark brown wavy stripes, pearly spots at the pectoral fin base, and a red net-like opercle.

Taxonomy & naming

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis was described by Chen and Kottelat in 2000, published in Ichthyological Research, from specimens collected in the upper Mulan River basin, Xianyou County, Fujian Province, eastern China. The type locality gives the species its name — xianshuiensis refers to the Xianshui River, the local drainage from which the original paratypes were collected. Subsequent topotype collections in 2014 extended the known size range slightly (1–1.5 in SL).

The Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places Rhinogobius in the family Oxudercidae, the most recently reorganised branch of the goby assemblage. This is a true goby: the pelvic fins are fused into a cup-shaped sucker disc, distinguishing the genus from the sleepers (Eleotridae) and gudgeons whose pelvic fins remain separate. Rhinogobius is a large genus of small, stream-adapted freshwater gobies centred on East Asia, with dozens of species spread across mainland China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the rivers of mainland South-East Asia.

Diagnostic characters separating R. xianshuiensis from congeners include 3–7 predorsal scales, 27 vertebrae, cephalic lateralis canals with two derived post-orbital pores in adults, and a reddish-brown vertical line below the eye. No subspecies or geographic variants have been described.

Morphology

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a miniature goby, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of around 1.5 in (males or unsexed individuals); paratype specimens ranged from approximately 1 in SL. Like all Rhinogobius, the body is slightly compressed laterally and the head is broad and depressed, with large eyes set high on the skull and a wide, fleshy mouth suited to picking invertebrates from the substrate. The first dorsal fin carries 7 spines, the second 8–9 soft rays; the anal fin has 1 spine and 6–8 soft rays.

Colouration is striking for such a small fish. The background is an orange-yellow wash adorned with 2–3 wavy dark brown stripes along the flank. The pectoral fin base carries a cluster of pearly round spots. The opercle (gill cover) is marked with a red, net-like reticulate pattern — one of the clearest field marks for the species — and the first dorsal fin is orange in breeding males. A reddish-brown vertical streak runs below the eye. Females are generally paler and less intensely patterned than males.

The pelvic fins are fully fused into the cup-shaped sucker disc characteristic of the true gobies, which allows the fish to grip smooth stones in fast current without being swept away.

Habitat

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a freshwater endemic restricted to the Xianshui River drainage and the upper Mulan River basin in Fujian Province, south-eastern China. The rivers of this region are swift, clear upland streams running over gravel, pebbles and bedrock, with strong current in riffles, abundant oxygenation and cool, slightly alkaline water. The fish occupies the bottom zone of these streams, using its pelvic sucker disc to hold station on stones in the current while it forages.

Like many Rhinogobius from south-eastern China, this is a cool-water and temperate species rather than a tropical one. Water temperatures in Fujian hill streams range broadly across the seasons; the genus as a whole tolerates temperatures from roughly 50–77 °F, and some members can survive down to 39 °F. A marked seasonal cool period is part of the natural regime. pH is slightly alkaline (approximately 7.0–8.0), water is well-oxygenated and moderately hard, and there is no marine or estuarine connection — this is a strictly freshwater fish.

Feeding

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a micro-predator in the mould of its genus, foraging along the streambed for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, amphipods, ostracods, small worms and other benthic prey of appropriate size. It locates food by sight and by movement, hunting low over the substrate.

In the aquarium the species does best on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: bloodworm, mosquito larvae, Artemia (brine shrimp), Daphnia and Mysis are the staples used for Rhinogobius in general. Dried foods are accepted by many individuals only after an acclimatisation period, and a fish maintained exclusively on flake or granules tends to lose condition. A regular supply of small live or frozen items is the safest route to good colour and condition, and to bringing fish into breeding readiness.

Mating

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a resident freshwater breeder — not amphidromous. It does not produce marine-drifting larvae, and so it is not dependent on access to the sea at any stage of its life. This places it among the fluvial (river-resident) members of the genus, a category that also includes the majority of the commonly kept Asian river gobies.

Conditioned males occupy and defend a small territory anchored around a sheltered cavity: a gap beneath a flat stone, a crevice in the bedrock or a similar enclosed space on the streambed. When ripe, males intensify their colour — the orange-yellow ground colour brightens, the dark stripes deepen and the first dorsal fin flushes orange — and court females approaching the territory. Females responding to courtship are led into the shelter where spawning takes place.

Breeding

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a cave and substrate spawner with male parental care: the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of the chosen crevice or stone hollow, and the male then guards and fans the eggs with his pectoral fins until they hatch. The female plays no further role once spawning is complete. Because the whole reproductive cycle takes place in fresh water, these fish can — in principle — be bred in the home aquarium, unlike the amphidromous gobies whose larvae must reach the sea.

Practical breeding data for R. xianshuiensis specifically are sparse in the aquarium literature, but the breeding biology is consistent with the wider Rhinogobius pattern. A pair in a well-filtered, cool, moderately hard-water tank supplied with flat stones, coconut-shell caves or PVC tube sections for spawning sites may attempt to breed when conditioned on live foods. Eggs are typically small and numerous; incubation time depends on temperature but is in the order of days at appropriate cool temperatures. The male should be left with the eggs; removing the female after spawning reduces the risk of aggression.

In the aquarium

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis is a nano-tank fish by any measure — a maximum of 1.5 in SL means a 60-litre aquarium is generous for a pair or a small group. The single most important care requirement for this species is temperature: it is a cool-water fish from a temperate province of China, and should not be kept at tropical temperatures. A range of roughly 57–72 °F suits it well; high summer temperatures above 77 °F are stressful, and many keepers in temperate climates keep Rhinogobius unheated or with active cooling.

Water quality should be excellent: well-filtered, well-oxygenated, slightly alkaline fresh water with moderate hardness and a reasonable current. A powerhead or spray bar directed along the tank length, combined with a fine gravel or mixed-gravel-and-pebble substrate and an assortment of smooth stones and small caves, replicates the streambed habitat well. The sucker disc allows the fish to rest on vertical surfaces and in fast flow, so a powerhead-driven current is welcome rather than stressful.

Males are territorial toward each other; a small group in a tank with visual breaks from rocks and planting reduces aggression. The species is a competent jumper and the tank must be covered securely. It should not be mixed with tropical community fish that require warmer water. Diet should be primarily live and frozen small invertebrates, not dry flake; a fish eating well and kept cool shows its best orange-yellow and red colouring.

Conservation

Rhinogobius xianshuiensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE). The related Fujian endemics R. wuyiensis and R. longyanensis have been assessed as Near Threatened and Data Deficient respectively, which gives a sense of the conservation landscape for small-stream gobies in this province.

The species is a narrow endemic: its known range is restricted to the Xianshui River drainage and the upper Mulan River basin in Fujian Province, an area subject to ongoing pressures from agricultural land use, water extraction and infrastructure development typical of south-eastern China. Small-stream endemics with restricted ranges are inherently at risk from any localised disturbance to the hydrological regime. The species does not appear to be traded in significant numbers in the aquarium hobby, so collection pressure is probably minimal, but the combination of a small range and undocumented status warrants a future Red List assessment.
