Anablepsoides igneus is a moderately large, non-annual South American rivuline endemic to the coastal watersheds of French Guiana and adjacent Suriname. Unlike the annual killifishes that dominate the hobby's popular imagination, it inhabits slow-flowing permanent water — rivers, swamps, and leaf-littered pools — and reproduces continuously by laying adhesive eggs on substrate and plant matter over days or weeks. Its size and exacting water requirements make it a specialist's fish, but for the patient aquarist it offers a window into the characteristically secretive and laterally compressed body plan of the Guiana shield rivulines.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides igneus was described by Jörg-Volker Huber in 1991 in a review of the rivulines of French Guiana, in a work that simultaneously described the closely related Rivulus cladophorus n.sp. and Rivulus igneus n.sp. The original combination was Rivulus igneus; the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been transferred to the genus Anablepsoides, which was reinstated to accommodate the Neotropical rivulines that were formerly lumped under the catchall Rivulus following molecular and morphological reassessment of the Old World and New World lineages. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats Anablepsoides igneus (Huber, 1991) as the valid name; Rivulus igneus is a junior synonym.

Within Anablepsoides, the species belongs to the broader assemblage of Guiana shield and coastal watershed rivulines that range from the Orinoco delta south through the Suriname and French Guiana river systems. The genus is diverse and many of its species remain poorly known, separated from one another primarily by colour pattern details in males. Molecular phylogenetic data have not yet fully resolved species limits in this group, and the taxonomy of closely allied forms from the Approuague, Oyapock, and Maroni basins may be subject to future revision.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 6 in TL for Anablepsoides igneus, making it one of the larger members of its genus and considerably bigger than the dwarf rivulines commonly encountered in the hobby. The body has the characteristically elongated, laterally compressed form of the rivuline grade: a rounded snout, large upward-directed eyes placed well forward on the head, and a long dorsal fin set far back, closer to the caudal peduncle than to the head — a body plan well-suited to foraging in dense leaf litter and at the water surface.

As in most Anablepsoides, males are more brightly coloured than females. Males display the iridescent blue, green, or red speckling on the flanks typical of the Guiana rivulines, with the intensity of colour varying by population and condition. Females are cryptically patterned in drab olive-brown with minimal ornament. Both sexes have the rounded caudal fin and broad pectoral fins of a fish that manoeuvres through cluttered substrates and standing vegetation rather than over open water.

Habitat

Anablepsoides igneus occurs across the river systems of French Guiana and into adjacent Suriname, with confirmed records from the Approuague, Maroni (including the Lawa tributary), Mana, Oyapock, Sinnamary, and Tampock river systems. It is a wide-ranging species for the region, occupying virtually all of the coastal watershed catchments of French Guiana according to field observations.

Within these systems the species favours slow-moving to stagnant water with a thick leaf-litter substrate. FishBase notes it is found in stagnant waters where the current is slow and the bottom is covered with dead leaves, as well as in slow streams with similar accumulated organic matter. This is a classic rainforest rivuline microhabitat: dark, tannin-stained water, low light penetration, and a deep cushion of decomposing leaves that provides both cover and the invertebrate prey on which the fish feeds. Water temperatures in these coastal lowland habitats range from approximately 75–82 °F, with a pH in the soft-acidic range around 6.0 typical of tannin-rich blackwater streams.

Feeding

Anablepsoides igneus is a carnivore, hunting invertebrates associated with the leaf-litter substrate and water surface of its rainforest stream habitat. The large eyes, forward-placed on the head, and the upturned mouth are consistent with a surface and near-surface ambush predator that targets insects, small crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates that fall onto or swim near the water surface.

In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily. Small live or frozen bloodworms, daphnia, artemia, and tubifex are suitable staples. Like most rivulines it can be weaned onto high-quality dried micro-pellets over time, though variety in the diet and a regular component of live or frozen food helps maintain condition and colour in males.

Mating

Anablepsoides igneus is a non-annual killifish. It does not bury eggs in substrate to withstand a dry season, as annual species do, but instead spawns continuously in permanent water by depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, roots, leaf litter, or spawning mops near the substrate. This mode of reproduction is typical of the genus Anablepsoides and of the majority of rivulines from permanently inundated forest systems.

In the aquarium, courtship follows the typical rivuline pattern: the male pursues the female and displays his lateral colour pattern alongside her; after acceptance, the pair come to rest on or beside a spawning surface and release a small number of adhesive eggs, which stick to the material rather than falling to the substrate. The pair may spawn daily over an extended period, producing a few eggs at a time rather than a single large clutch. Unlike annual killifishes, there is no specific requirement for peat moss, dry-out periods, or diapause induction.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Anablepsoides igneus follows the standard non-annual rivuline method. A pair or small trio (one male to one or two females) is conditioned in a small aquarium — a 10-litre tank is often cited for initial spawning — furnished with a filter or gentle aeration, floating plants, fine-leaved plants, or a dark synthetic spawning mop anchored near the base. The fish deposit eggs on these materials over days and weeks; the eggs are checked every few days and removed to a shallow hatching container of the same water.

Eggs of Anablepsoides are relatively tough and incubate in water without the need for diapause. Incubation takes one to two weeks at typical warm temperatures. Newly hatched fry are free-swimming almost immediately and large enough to accept freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or microworm from the start; infusoria is rarely needed. Fry grow steadily and reach sexual maturity in a few months. The adults are not known to consume their own eggs with the same readiness as some other killies, but removing the eggs is still standard practice to maximise fry yields.

In the aquarium

FishBase characterises Anablepsoides igneus as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a rating that likely reflects the species' large size for a rivuline (up to 6 in TL), its need for soft acidic water consistent with its tannin-rich native habitat, and its relative rarity in the trade compared with more popular small killifish. It is not a beginner's killi and is seldom seen outside specialist killifish circles.

Housing should reflect the species' preference for low-flow, dark, leaf-littered water. A heavily planted or densely decorated aquarium with Indian almond leaves or oak leaves, good cover, and gentle filtration is appropriate. Water chemistry should target the soft-acidic parameters of its native French Guiana streams: temperature 75–82 °F and pH around 6.0. Tankmates, if any, should be peaceful species of similar water-chemistry requirements and substantially smaller than the fish so as not to compete for surface space or be threatened by the predatory instincts of a 6 in rivuline.

The species is not widely available commercially and is mainly kept by killifish society members and specialist collectors with access to hobbyist distribution networks. Its large size, exacting conditions, and limited availability mean it is more of a collector's trophy than a routine community or display fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List, as reported by FishBase for this species, assigns Anablepsoides igneus the status of Least Concern, assessed on 1 January 2021. This reflects the species' comparatively wide distribution across multiple French Guiana watersheds — the Approuague, Maroni, Mana, Oyapock, and Sinnamary systems — rather than the single-locality endemism that places many other killifish at elevated risk.

Nevertheless, French Guiana's lowland forest streams and swamps face ongoing pressure from gold mining (orpaillage), which causes severe mercury contamination and physical destruction of small watercourses, as well as from deforestation driven by agricultural expansion and infrastructure development. Because the species is tied to slow-flowing leaf-littered water in intact forest, habitat degradation rather than direct exploitation is the likely primary threat. The Least Concern assessment should not be read as a guarantee of abundance; the species' secretive habits and specialist microhabitat mean that distributional surveys remain incomplete and local population trends within individual river systems are poorly documented.
