Taxonomy & naming
Anablepsoides stagnatus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, based on material collected during his 1908 scientific expedition into the interior of Guyana — then British Guiana — centred on the Christianburg/Linden area of the Demerara River drainage. Eigenmann placed the species in the genus Rivulus, where it remained for most of the twentieth century; the current placement in Anablepsoides follows the generic revision of the South American rivulines by Whitten, Costa, and others that brought the informal 'Rivulus magdalenae' and allied species groups into a single, diagnosable genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Anablepsoides stagnatus (Eigenmann, 1909), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the name's transfer from Rivulus.
The species epithet stagnatus derives from the Latin stagnum, meaning a pool, pond, or standing water — an apt description of the open, often sun-exposed swamp habitats where Eigenmann and subsequent collectors encountered it. The genus name Anablepsoides alludes to a superficial resemblance to the four-eyed fish Anableps (though Anablepsoides lacks the split pupil): the elevated, upward-angled eyes are a convergent feature in surface-oriented, insectivorous rivulines.
The species' meristics as reported from the type series and subsequent collections are consistent: dorsal-fin rays D8, anal-fin rays A13, a dorsal-to-anal ratio of approximately 11, and lateral-line scale count around 40.
Morphology
Anablepsoides stagnatus is a slender, torpedo-shaped killifish reaching a maximum of 2.5 in total length (FishBase; It Rains Fishes). The body is cylindrical anteriorly and somewhat compressed toward the caudal peduncle, typical of the rivuline build. The dorsal fin is set well back on the body — the elevated dorsal-to-anal ratio of around 11 places the dorsal fin origin notably posterior to the anal fin origin, a consistent character of the genus. Fin-ray counts of D8 and A13 are documented.
Colouration in males is the more striking: the body is typically olive to tan with an iridescent blue-green or teal sheen on the flanks, overlaid with a faint reticulate pattern of darker scales. The fins, particularly the dorsal and caudal, may show reddish to orange-red pigmentation with darker margins. Females are more uniformly olive-brown and lack the fin colouration of males. The caudal fin is rounded. Sexual dimorphism is evident even in juveniles, with males developing colour before reaching full size and maturing at approximately 4–5 months of age.
Habitat
The type locality of Anablepsoides stagnatus is the Christianburg/Linden area of the Demerara River system in Guyana; the species is also recorded from Brokopondo district in Suriname, giving it a range spanning the central Guiana lowlands of both countries. Its habitats are characteristically open: shallow swamps, marshy pools, and water bodies set within open grassland rather than closed-canopy forest — a distinction from the blackwater forest-stream rivulines of the genus. These sites are often sun-exposed and subject to higher temperatures and greater day-to-day water-level fluctuation than shaded forest streams.
Despite its association with open, often stagnant water bodies, Anablepsoides stagnatus is confirmed as non-annual (FishBase; It Rains Fishes) — the water bodies it inhabits persist year-round or at least long enough that the species does not rely on drought-resistant diapausing eggs buried in mud. The fish is described as benthopelagic and non-migratory. The waters of the Guiana lowlands are typically soft and somewhat acidic, though the open swamp habitats where this species occurs may be less extreme in chemistry than the tannin-stained blackwater streams of the interior. No precise field measurements of water chemistry at collection sites are available in the current cache.
Feeding
Like most small rivulines, Anablepsoides stagnatus is a micro-predator, taking invertebrates at or near the water surface. In the wild the diet consists primarily of small aquatic and terrestrial insects, aquatic crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates encountered in shallow swamp margins and on the water film. The upward-angled eyes characteristic of the genus are an adaptation to surface-feeding, enabling the fish to detect floating or emerging invertebrates.
In the aquarium the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small tubifex are all taken with enthusiasm. High-quality small dried foods may be accepted by acclimatised individuals. Feeding a varied diet rich in live and frozen invertebrates supports good colour in males and promotes conditioning for breeding.
Mating
Anablepsoides stagnatus is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish: rather than burying eggs in substrate to await the dry season, pairs hang adhesive eggs on floating spawning mops, fine-leaved plants, or submerged roots near the water surface or near the bottom, and spawning continues as a sustained daily process over weeks. This places it firmly in the plant-spawner guild that characterises many of the South American rivulines in permanent or semi-permanent waters.
Spawning pairs engage in side-by-side courtship behaviour, with the male displaying lateral colour to the female. Eggs are deposited singly or in small batches: the It Rains Fishes account records 5–15 eggs per day from a conditioned pair, each egg approximately 0.5 in in diameter and amber in colour. Adhesive filaments anchor the eggs to plant material or mop fibres. Males may court multiple females in a well-planted aquarium with adequate space. As with all killifishes the pair should be watched for aggression — exhausted or harassed females should be separated.
Breeding
Eggs of Anablepsoides stagnatus incubate in water at ambient temperature, with no requirement for a dry period or substrate burial. At typical tropical temperatures the eggs hatch in approximately 14 days. The larvae are small but relatively robust and free-swimming within a few days of hatching. Fry should be started on infusoria or commercial fry powder before graduating to freshly hatched artemia nauplii and micro-worms as they grow.
Breeding in the aquarium is described as straightforward once fish are properly conditioned. A small aquarium — 10–15 US gal — with a tight-fitting lid (the species is an accomplished jumper), fine-leaved floating plants or synthetic spawning mops, and good water quality is sufficient. A peat-filtered or gently tannin-stained setup mimicking the soft-water Guiana lowland swamp environment is appropriate. Eggs can be collected daily from the mop and incubated in small containers of aquarium water, allowing continuous fry production. The fish mature at approximately 4–5 months and may live up to 3 years in captivity — a notably long lifespan for a rivuline of this size.
In the aquarium
Anablepsoides stagnatus is rated as a difficult species in captivity by FishBase, a designation that likely reflects its specific requirements for water quality and appropriate conditions rather than any particular aggression or disease susceptibility. In practice, hobbyists who keep the related Anablepsoides and Rivulus species find this group manageable provided the tank is kept clean, the lid is secure (these are persistent jumpers), and the fish are not mixed with unsuitably large or aggressive tankmates.
The species does best in a soft, slightly acidic to neutral water environment replicating the Guiana lowland swamp — temperature in the range of 72–79 °F, pH mildly acidic to neutral, and low to moderate hardness. Dense surface cover of floating plants or a tangle of fine-leaved vegetation provides security and spawning substrate simultaneously. A small, species-only or rivuline-community setup is appropriate; males may spar but serious injury is uncommon in adequately furnished tanks. The daily spawning routine — collecting eggs from the mop, recording hatch rates, rearing fry — is a significant part of the appeal for killi-keepers, and the moderate productivity of 5–15 eggs per day makes this species accessible without overwhelming the hobbyist.
Conservation
Anablepsoides stagnatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its conservation status as Not Evaluated (NE). This is a common situation for the hundreds of small rivuline species across South America, most of which have not attracted the attention needed for a formal threat assessment. The species' known range — the Demerara River system of Guyana and Brokopondo district of Suriname — lies in the Guiana Shield, a region whose interior forests and wetlands remain comparatively intact relative to the heavily deforested Atlantic Forest or Andean foothills, and which has not yet experienced the large-scale agricultural conversion that threatens rivulines elsewhere.
Nonetheless the open grassland swamp habitats preferred by this species are potentially vulnerable to drainage for agriculture and infrastructure development, which is increasing across the Guyanese and Surinamese lowlands as those countries expand their oil, gold, and timber sectors. Baseline distribution surveys and population assessments for small, ecologically specialised fishes like this one remain lacking. For now the species' status in the wild is unknown; the hobbyist community through the American Killifish Association and similar bodies maintains captive populations that serve as an informal reserve against the possibility of population declines in the natural range.
