Originally placed in the catch-all genus Rivulus, it was subsequently transferred to Anablepsoides during the molecular reclassification of South American rivulines. A plant-spawner with a lifespan of up to three years in captivity, it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN (2020). Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides jucundus was described by Jean-Henri Huber in 1992 in his monograph Review of Rivulus: Ecobiogeography — Relationships (Cybium Supplement, Société Française d'Ichthyologie), with the type locality given as Puyo, on the Río Pastaza in Ecuador. Huber originally placed the species in the genus Rivulus, the broad holding genus for South American rivulines, and for most of its history the species was known as Rivulus jucundus. The current valid combination, Anablepsoides jucundus (Huber, 1992), reflects the generic revision of the former Rivulus assemblage on molecular and phylogenetic grounds; the authority appears in parentheses because the species was originally described under a different genus name. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Anablepsoides jucundus, placing the species in the family Rivulidae, subfamily Rivulinae, with its distribution centred on the Amazon River basin in Ecuador.

Authority for the current genus-level classification is credited to Varella, H.R. (2023), reflecting the ongoing refinement of rivuline systematics. The genus Anablepsoides takes its name from a superficial anatomical resemblance between the eye arrangement in certain members and the four-eyed fish Anableps — a morphological parallel rather than a functional one. The specific epithet jucundus is Latin for 'pleasant' or 'agreeable' and was chosen by Huber to evoke the colorful and delicate characteristics of the color pattern (from the etymology database EtymFish).

Morphology

Anablepsoides jucundus is a slender, moderately compressed rivuline reaching a maximum standard length of 2 in (It Rains Fishes). The body plan is typical of non-annual South American rivulines: an elongate profile with the dorsal fin set well back over the anal fin, a rounded caudal fin, and a slightly upturned mouth suited for surface or near-surface prey capture. The lateral line is incomplete, represented by a series of embedded neuromasts, as is characteristic of the family Rivulidae.

Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of the genus: males display the metallic, iridescent colouration for which the species was named — Huber's epithet jucundus ('pleasant, agreeable') was expressly a reference to the colorful and delicate nature of the pattern. Females are drabber, brownish-olive, and commonly carry the ocellated caudal spot — the 'rivuline spot' — that is retained as a signal or mimicry feature in females of many Anablepsoides species. Specific meristic counts for A. jucundus are not fully documented in widely available sources, but the general build and scale counts are consistent with other small members of the genus.

Habitat

The type locality is Puyo, a town in Pastaza Province, Ecuador, located in the upper Amazon basin at the foot of the Andes where Andean foothill streams descend toward the western Amazonian lowlands. The Río Pastaza is a large tributary of the Marañón and ultimately the Amazon, draining a watershed that spans high Andean slopes and tropical lowland forest. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the distribution as the Amazon River basin, Ecuador, indicating that the species' confirmed range is concentrated in Ecuador rather than extending across the broader Amazonian basin.

Permanent, forested streams at mid-elevation in the Ecuadorian Amazon are typically clear to lightly tea-stained, with moderate currents, sandy or rocky substrates, and abundant overhanging vegetation and leaf litter providing cover. FishBase notes that A. jucundus is not a seasonal killifish, consistent with the permanent-water habitats of the upper Amazon foothill zone. Specific temperature and pH data from collection sites are not well-documented in the available literature, but the upper Amazon foothill streams of Ecuador are generally soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and cooler than lowland Amazonian floodplain waters.

Feeding

Like other small non-annual rivulines of its size, Anablepsoides jucundus is a generalised carnivore that targets small invertebrates at or near the water surface and in the water column. In its native Ecuadorian foothill-stream habitat, the natural diet is likely dominated by small terrestrial and aquatic insects — fallen arthropods, drifting invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and similar prey that a fish with a slightly upturned mouth would intercept at or just below the surface film.

In captivity the species can be fed a varied diet of small live and frozen foods: Drosophila, fine frozen bloodworm, cyclops, Daphnia, and similarly sized invertebrate prey are appropriate. As with other small killifish, feeding variety supports full colour expression and reproductive condition. FishBase flags the species as difficult in the aquarium context; this rating reflects maintenance sensitivity rather than dietary fussiness, and the species should respond well to regular small meals of high-quality live or frozen invertebrate foods once stable water conditions are achieved.

Mating

Anablepsoides jucundus is a non-annual killifish — it inhabits permanent water bodies and does not produce diapausing eggs that survive substrate desiccation. Its reproductive mode is that of a plant or mop spawner: pairs deposit individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, Java moss, rootlets, or floating spawning mops over extended periods, with no buried-peat mechanism and no diapause phase in the egg. This mode is shared with other non-annual rivulines and differs fundamentally from the peat-spawning annual killifish with which the killi hobby is sometimes stereotyped.

Hobbyist accounts via It Rains Fishes describe a sustained output of approximately 5–15 eggs per day when pairs are well-fed. Males court females with lateral fin displays, aligning alongside the female before each individual egg deposition. The eggs are amber-coloured and approximately 0.5 in in diameter — relatively large for a 2 in fish, consistent with the direct-development pattern of non-annual killifish. Pairs that have been kept together continuously breed more reliably than individuals that are separated and then re-introduced, as males may become aggressive toward females after a period of separation.

Breeding

Eggs of Anablepsoides jucundus incubate in water and hatch after approximately 14 days at typical tropical room temperatures. Adding a small quantity of acriflavine to the incubation water is a common hobbyist practice to suppress fungal infection during incubation. The fry are large enough at hatching to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately, which simplifies early rearing considerably compared with the smallest-fry killifish species that require infusoria or rotifers as first food. Growth is progressive and the fish reach sexual maturity at approximately 4–5 months of age. Captive lifespan is recorded at up to three years (It Rains Fishes), which is typical for non-annual rivulines of this size.

It Rains Fishes notes one interesting detail about sex ratio: incubating eggs at a lower pH increases the proportion of females in the resulting cohort, a form of environmental sex determination that has been documented in a number of killifish species. For hobbyists producing surplus fish, this provides a practical lever for skewing the sex ratio of a brood. A. jucundus is noted as an excellent jumper, and all maintenance and breeding vessels must be tightly covered.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides jucundus is described by FishBase as difficult to maintain — a characterisation that reflects sensitivity to water-quality deterioration rather than extreme environmental specialisation. In practice, the species requires clean, stable, well-oxygenated water, good filtration without excessive turbulence, and a tightly covered aquarium since it is an accomplished jumper. A mature, biologically stable small tank (10–15 US gal) densely planted with fine-leaved vegetation and floating cover is the preferred setup.

Multiple males and females can be housed together if they are established as a group from the outset and never separated; hobbyist accounts from It Rains Fishes warn that removing and reintroducing individuals causes aggression, particularly from males toward females. Compatible tankmates should be similarly small, peaceful, and undemanding — small tetras or bottom-dwelling microfish that occupy different water levels are broadly compatible, though the species is most securely kept in a species or near-species arrangement.

The species reaches maturity at 4–5 months and can be bred in the aquarium using clumps of Java moss or fine-leaved plants as spawning sites. Eggs can be collected manually and incubated separately in small containers with acriflavine-treated water, or fry can be raised in a well-planted setup where they have cover sufficient to avoid being eaten by the adults.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides jucundus as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a range that covers suitable habitats across the Ecuadorian Amazon basin rather than a single critically restricted site. The species is associated with the permanent foothill-stream habitats of the upper Río Pastaza drainage, a region that faces ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion, road building, and oil and gas development in the Ecuadorian Amazon — one of the most biodiverse and threatened portions of the continent's freshwater network.

While the Least Concern designation indicates that the species is not currently considered at elevated extinction risk, killifish endemic to single river systems in the upper Amazon can be vulnerable to localised habitat degradation. The deforestation of riparian buffer zones, sedimentation from agriculture and road construction, and hydrocarbon contamination from extractive industries are the primary threats operating in the Pastaza watershed. Ongoing monitoring of small-bodied endemic stream fish in Ecuador remains important given the pace of habitat change in the region.
