Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion joergenscheeli was described by Huber and Radda in 1977, with the type locality recorded as approximately 4 mi west of Mimongo towards Lébamba in central-southern Gabon — a small stream within the Migoto-Ogoulou subsystem, itself a tributary branch of the Ngounié River drainage. The valid combination, as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Aphyosemion joergenscheeli Huber & Radda, 1977.
The species belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Aphyosemion, which encompasses the majority of West and Central African non-annual killifishes. Numerous wild collection series have been documented under codes from the GBG, GJS, GEB, and GJH collecting expeditions, indicating that multiple geographically distinct populations exist across the species' restricted range. The existence of these strains is of significance to killifish hobbyists, who maintain strict collection-locality data to preserve the genetic integrity of wild lines. The name Fundulopanchax jorgenscheeli is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
As is typical for the genus, Aphyosemion joergenscheeli is a slender, laterally compressed fish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2.5 in for males and unsexed specimens. The body plan is the classic Aphyosemion shape: an upturned mouth positioned for surface feeding, large eyes, and a rounded to slightly lanceolate caudal fin depending on sex and individual.
Males are considerably more colourful than females, exhibiting the richly patterned flanks and finnage typical of West-Central African Aphyosemion. Females are generally plainer, smaller-bodied, and less intensely pigmented — sexual dichromatism is well developed and allows confident sexing of adults. The eggs are notably large relative to the genus, a feature remarked upon by hobbyists who have bred the species.
Habitat
In the wild, Aphyosemion joergenscheeli occupies small, fast- to moderately-flowing highland brooks and streams at altitudes above 1640 ft within central-southern Gabon. Streams at the type locality and surrounding collection sites are narrow — typically 59–78.5 in wide — and shallow, reaching a maximum depth of around 19.5 in. The water is predominantly clear, though some tannin staining may occur seasonally.
Water chemistry measurements from collection sites document exceptionally soft, low-conductivity conditions: pH values spanning 5.95 to 6.9, total hardness below 1 °dGH, carbonate hardness below detectable levels, and conductivity of only 6 to 31 µS/cm. These are among the most dilute freshwater conditions recorded for a killifish, reflecting the granitic highland geology of the Ngounié drainage. Collections by hobbyist-naturalists were made during the rainy seasons (October to December and March to June), when stream levels are higher and the fish are more easily netted in bankside vegetation.
Feeding
Like the majority of small Aphyosemion species, A. joergenscheeli is a micro-predator in the wild, targeting small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface-fallen terrestrial invertebrates — that its upturned mouth and fast reflexes are adapted to exploit. The narrow, fast-flowing highland streams it inhabits support a different invertebrate community than the slower lowland waters occupied by many congeners, and this may shape the species' prey preferences.
In captivity, the fish accepts live and frozen foods readily: daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and artemia nauplii or adult brine shrimp are all suitable. Dried and pelleted foods are accepted by some individuals but should be supplemented with live or frozen items for optimal condition and colour expression.
Mating
Aphyosemion joergenscheeli is a non-annual, permanent-water killifish. Rather than the buried, diapausing eggs of annual species from seasonal pools, this species spawns into plant material and spawning mops in a protracted, pair-based courtship. Males display to females with spread finnage and lateral orientation, showing the full extent of their colouration.
The pair position themselves in or beside fine-leaved plants or fibrous roots near the substrate or water surface. Mating embraces result in the deposition of individual adhesive eggs onto plant material or mop fibres, rather than buried into peat or substrate. Spawning is continuous rather than seasonal, occurring throughout the year when conditions are suitable, consistent with the permanently flowing, thermally stable highland streams the species inhabits.
Breeding
In the aquarium, Aphyosemion joergenscheeli spawns on spawning mops placed at or near the substrate. Hobbyist accounts indicate the species is not straightforward to breed, requiring attention to water quality and chemistry that mirrors the ultra-soft, slightly acidic wild habitat. Eggs are large for the genus and adhesive, deposited singly into mop fibres or plant material over extended periods.
Eggs incubate in water at optimal temperatures of 66–70 °F and hatch after approximately four weeks — a relatively long incubation for Aphyosemion. The fry are small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods such as infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial fry powders before graduating to micro-worm and baby brine shrimp nauplii. Adults are generally not aggressive toward fry to the same degree as annual species but separating eggs for dedicated incubation simplifies rearing. The species is best maintained in pairs or small groups with a female bias to reduce male-to-male aggression.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion joergenscheeli is kept by specialist killifish hobbyists who value its ornate male colouration and the challenge of maintaining genetically documented wild strains. Multiple collection-locality populations are held in the hobby under GBG, GJS, GEB, and GJH series codes, and dedicated killi societies maintain studbooks to prevent hybridisation between strains.
The species demands cool, ultra-soft, slightly acidic water for best condition and breeding success: temperatures of 66–70 °F are optimal, though it tolerates a range from around 61 °F to a maximum of 73–75 °F. Water hardness should be as low as practically achievable — reconstituted reverse-osmosis water with a small addition of mineral salts or a proprietary blackwater conditioner is appropriate. pH of 6.0–6.8 suits the species well. A mature, well-filtered tank with dense fine-leaved planting or quality spawning mops provides both the spawning sites and the visual cover this slightly timid fish prefers. The aquarium should be tightly covered, as killifish are notorious jumpers.
Conservation
The IUCN assessed Aphyosemion joergenscheeli as Least Concern as of September 2016, a status confirmed by the Annotated Checklist of Fishes of Gabon (Chirio et al., VLIZ). This assessment reflects the absence of documented acute population declines at the time of evaluation rather than any particular abundance.
Nonetheless, several characteristics of the species give cause for ongoing vigilance. It is a narrow endemic, known only from a handful of streams within the Migoto-Ogoulou subsystem of the Ngounié drainage in central-southern Gabon — a distribution encompassing a very limited geographic area. Its dependence on high-altitude, ultra-soft, fast-flowing highland streams makes it particularly sensitive to catchment disturbance: deforestation for logging or agriculture that increases siltation and raises conductivity, or changes to stream hydrology through land clearance, could degrade habitat rapidly. Gabon retains large intact forest blocks, but extraction pressure is increasing. The species' non-annual life history means populations cannot recover from local extinction events through dormant eggs in the substrate, as some annual killifishes can — once a population is eliminated, recolonisation depends on connected water bodies, which may be limited in the fragmented highland stream network.
