Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion punctatum was described by Austrian killifish researchers Anton Radda and Erhard Pürzl in 1977, in the journal Aquaria (volume 24, pages 21–31), as part of their series 'Cyprinodontiden studien in Gabon II'. The type locality is the Catholic Mission at Makokou in north-western Gabon. The valid combination is recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Aphyosemion punctatum Radda & Pürzl, 1977.
The species belongs to the large and diverse genus Aphyosemion, the core group of non-annual West and Central African killifishes. Aphyosemion encompasses well over 100 described species and is divided informally into species groups on the basis of shared colour pattern, morphology, and phylogenetic affinity; punctatum is typically assigned to the 'Aphyosemion elegans' or related complex, alongside other spotted, forest-stream Aphyosemion from the Congo basin periphery and coastal Gabon. The genus name Aphyosemion is compounded from the Greek aphyo (small fish) and semeion (mark or signal), a reference to the vivid patterning that characterises the males of nearly all its members.
Known populations have been collected at three main localities — Makokou, Ovan, and Koulamoutou in Gabon — and the species extends into adjacent parts of the Republic of Congo and Cameroon. Killifish hobbyists track fish by collection-point codes, and specimens in circulation descend from historical imports labelled with these site names.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 1.5–3 in total length, with females typically smaller and plainer than males. The body is slender and slightly compressed, with the dorsal profile gently arched and the caudal fin rounded to slightly pointed. Meristics recorded for the species include D=12 and A=16.
Males carry the full ornamental display of the genus: the base colour is a metallic blue-green to turquoise, and the flanks and unpaired fins bear rows of red to brownish-red dots or short dashes — the interrupted punctate pattern the specific epithet celebrates. The extent and intensity of the red markings vary between locality populations, with some Makokou fish showing a denser dot pattern than Koulamoutou fish. The dorsal and anal fins are edged with red or orange-red, and the caudal fin may carry a marginal stripe of contrasting colour.
Females are cryptically coloured, with a plain olive-brown body and only faint or absent red markings, though a few pale dots may persist on the caudal peduncle and base of the caudal fin. This strong sexual dichromatism is typical of the genus and makes sex determination straightforward once fish approach maturity.
Habitat
Aphyosemion punctatum inhabits the slow-moving and stagnant marginal waters of lowland and foothill forest in Gabon, the Republic of Congo, and Cameroon — small streams, seepage channels, and pools in or at the edge of tropical rainforest and forest-savanna transition zones. The Makokou type locality lies within the Ogooué basin drainage of north-eastern Gabon.
Water chemistry at the Koulamoutou collection site has been measured at pH 6.7 and general hardness of approximately 0.8 dH — soft and only slightly acid, reflecting the nutrient-poor sandy and laterite soils of the region. FishBase records the species as preferring water around 68 °F, consistent with the shaded forest-stream environment where temperatures remain moderate year-round, buffered from the tropical ambient by canopy cover and groundwater input.
The water is typically tannin-stained to clear, with low conductivity, sparse or absent aquatic vegetation, and abundant leaf litter and woody debris on the substrate. These are permanent or near-permanent streams — not seasonally desiccating swamps — which aligns with the non-annual life history of the species. Aphyosemion punctatum coexists in some localities with other killifish and small cyprinids characteristic of Gabonese forest streams.
Feeding
In the wild, Aphyosemion punctatum is an opportunistic micro-predator, taking small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, and falling terrestrial insects — from the water column and the leaf-litter surface layer. The small mouth and slender build are consistent with a diet of live invertebrate prey rather than larger food items.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Moina, artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and small Tubifex or white worms are all taken with enthusiasm. Appropriately sized high-quality dried foods are also accepted once the fish are settled, though live and frozen foods should form the backbone of the diet for best colouring and conditioning for breeding. Feeding twice daily in modest amounts maintains condition without overloading the biological filter in the small tanks the species is typically housed in.
Mating
Aphyosemion punctatum is a non-annual plant-spawner: the pair deposit adhesive eggs individually on fine-leaved plants, roots, or the fibres of floating spawning mops, hanging the eggs near the surface or in mid-water rather than burying them in substrate. Spawning is a protracted process occurring over days and weeks rather than as a single mass event, and the eggs incubate in the water — there is no diapause, no peat burial, and no dry storage phase.
Males display actively to females with spread fins, erect opercula, and lateral posturing, presenting the maximum extent of their coloration. The courtship sequence is brief: the male manoeuvres alongside the female, and as she positions among the mop fibres or plant leaves, the pair briefly press together and release a single egg. This is repeated across many sessions. Multiple males will compete for access to females in group settings, and dominant males may harass subdominant ones in confined spaces, making selective pairing or small trios the standard approach in captivity.
Females can store sperm and may produce fertile eggs for several weeks after separation from a male, a common attribute in Aphyosemion that hobbyists exploit to produce single-male pairings for strain management.
Breeding
Eggs are deposited individually on mop fibres or fine plant leaves and should be collected every few days if raising fry is intended. The eggs are relatively large for the size of the fish, adhesive, and translucent; they incubate in the water at the ambient tank temperature of roughly 68–72 °F, hatching in approximately 21–23 days as reported by the British Killifish Association. Incubation time shortens at higher temperatures but developmental abnormalities increase, so most breeders keep eggs cool.
Hatchlings are large enough to take newly hatched artemia nauplii or micro-worm immediately, which simplifies early rearing compared to many micro-cyprinids. Subsequent growth is steady; young fish are separated by size cohort to prevent predation of smaller siblings by faster-growing individuals. Fry show plain colouration initially, with males developing adult patterning progressively from three to five months of age depending on temperature and feeding.
Lifespan is significantly longer than in annual killifish: Aphyosemion punctatum, kept at cool temperatures with good water quality, commonly lives two to three years or more in captivity, and the breeding pair can be maintained and worked across multiple spawning cycles. Spawning mops or bushy plants such as Java moss are the standard medium; some breeders alternate between floating and submerged mops to distribute egg deposition across the water column.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion punctatum is considered one of the more approachable species of the genus for the hobbyist new to Aphyosemion, tolerating a modest range of water conditions without the acute sensitivity to hardness and temperature spikes that characterises some of its more demanding relatives. A tank of 10–15 US gal is ample for a pair or trio; water should be soft (well under 10 dH), slightly acid to neutral (pH 6.5–7.2), and kept at 68–72 °F. Temperatures above 75 °F for sustained periods weaken the fish and shorten lifespan, making the species better suited to cooler rooms or rooms without central heating.
Decoration with floating plants, spawning mops, and some leaf litter or driftwood to provide cover and gentle tannin staining is appreciated. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter that provides biological filtration without strong current is ideal. Regular small water changes with soft, temperature-matched water maintain the low conductivity the species prefers.
Aphyosemion punctatum is a peaceful fish and can be kept in species tanks or with other small, non-aggressive species that share its preference for cool, soft water. Males of different Aphyosemion species should not be mixed in small tanks, as interspecific male aggression is common and hybridisation is a real risk given the ease with which Aphyosemion species cross-breed in captivity. Maintaining locality purity is an ethical responsibility within the killifish hobby, particularly for species with small wild ranges.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion punctatum as Least Concern in 2009, reflecting a distribution across Gabon, the Republic of Congo, and Cameroon with no immediate evidence of population collapse. The species inhabits permanent or near-permanent forest streams and is therefore not subject to the catastrophic seasonal drying events that imperil annual killifish endemics confined to single ephemeral pools.
Nonetheless, the rainforest streams of Gabon and Cameroon face mounting pressure from logging, agricultural expansion, and road-building, all of which destabilise stream hydrology, increase sedimentation, and degrade water quality in the soft, low-conductivity habitats that Aphyosemion species require. Localized collection-point populations — such as those at Makokou, Ovan, and Koulamoutou — could be extirpated by site-specific disturbance even if the broader species population remains viable. The killifish hobby plays a modest but genuine role in maintaining living stocks: captive-held, locality-documented lineages serve as a genetic repository should wild populations decline, and several killifish organisations actively maintain and exchange documented strains.
A re-assessment with updated distributional data and threat modelling for the individual collection sites would refine the conservation picture. For now, the 2009 Least Concern status is the standing evaluation.
