Aphyosemion tirbaki is a small, vividly marked killifish from the rainforest streams of Gabon, described in 1999 from a single locality near Tsotandzala in the interior of the country. Known from only a handful of collection events and placed in the ogoense species group of the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion, it occupies clear, soft, and slightly acidic forest streams and is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List owing to its extremely restricted range and the diffuse but persistent threats bearing on Gabonese interior forests.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion tirbaki was formally described by Joerg H. Huber in 1999, based on material collected from a small forest stream near Tsotandzala, approximately 51 mi south-east of Lastourville in interior Gabon. The original description was published in Freshwater & Marine Aquarium (22(4):104–118, 1999) and simultaneously announced in the British Killifish Association newsletter No. 409 of October 1999. The species is placed within the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion and belongs to the ogoense species group — a cluster of closely related, predominantly Gabonese Aphyosemion with overlapping but distinct ranges in the river basins of the interior plateau.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Aphyosemion tirbaki Huber, 1999. The authority is unparenthesised because the species was described in the genus in which it currently sits. Meristic data from the type series give dorsal fin rays 14–15 and anal fin rays 16, with the dorsal-fin origin three to four scales anterior to the anal-fin origin (D/A +3 to +4), and 27–28 lateral-line scales — figures consistent with other members of the ogoense group.

Huber used the description of A. tirbaki to develop his 'frontier species concept', which proposes that species at the edge of a genus-level range tend to show transitional or unusual characters and may complicate straightforward synapomorphy-based diagnoses. This theoretical framing was embedded in the original publication's title and distinguishes A. tirbaki's description from a purely taxonomic account.

Morphology

Aphyosemion tirbaki is a small killifish; FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5 in, consistent with the size given in the original description of around 3 in total length for the largest males. This places it at the smaller end of the ogoense group, which spans a narrow band of body sizes across its Gabonese members.

As a member of the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion and the ogoense group, A. tirbaki displays the colour patterning typical of the group: males carry vivid lateral and fin markings in combinations of red, orange, and blue that serve in mate choice and rival recognition. Females are more cryptically coloured, with subdued brown or olive tones and reduced or absent fin ornamentation — a pattern of pronounced sexual dichromatism consistent across the ogoense group and the broader genus. Habitat

The type locality is a small forest stream near Tsotandzala in the Ogooué basin of interior Gabon. The stream was measured at 8–11 ft wide and 12–23.5 in deep at the time of collection, with a gravel substrate and partially shaded surface — features typical of headwater tributaries threading beneath a closed rainforest canopy in this part of Central Africa. Associated fauna collected at the same site included Barbus sp., Ctenopoma kingsleyae, an unidentified characin, freshwater shrimps, and tadpoles, indicating a biologically rich but spatially confined system.

Water chemistry measurements taken at the locality were pH 6.2–6.4 and less than 1° dGH — very soft and mildly acidic, characteristic of streams draining the Precambrian basement rocks of the Gabon interior where mineral weathering is slow and organic tannins from forest litter dominate the ionic signature. These conditions are typical of the micro-habitats occupied by members of the ogoense group across Gabon.

Three collection codes are known for A. tirbaki: the type-locality collection EBT 96/7, and two closely neighbouring collections BSWG 97/8 and BSWG 97/9. The extreme geographic restriction — all known localities cluster within a small area south-east of Lastourville — defines the species as a narrow endemic of the Ogooué drainage system.

Feeding

No targeted dietary study of Aphyosemion tirbaki exists in the published literature. As with other members of the ogoense group, the species is presumed to be a micro-predator in its native habitat, feeding primarily on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — chironomid larvae, mosquito wrigglers, micro-crustaceans, and invertebrates falling onto the stream surface from the overhanging forest canopy. This inference is supported by the general feeding ecology of Aphyosemion across the genus and by the arthropod-rich nature of Gabonese forest-stream communities.

In aquarium conditions, A. tirbaki is readily maintained on live or frozen small invertebrates — Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, and chironomid larvae (bloodworm) — and on appropriately sized quality dried foods once the fish has settled. Like most killifish, it is visually oriented and responds strongly to moving prey.

Mating

Aphyosemion tirbaki is a non-annual killifish inhabiting permanent or near-permanent forest streams, and its reproductive strategy is correspondingly that of a plant or mop spawner rather than a soil-depositing annual. Pairs do not excavate or bury eggs in substrate; instead, the male courts the female with lateral displays emphasising his chromatic fin ornamentation — the vivid red and blue markings of the ogoense group serving as fitness indicators — and spawning occurs when the female accepts the male alongside her near the water surface or among fine-leaved vegetation and plant roots.

The pair press together briefly and release a small number of adhesive eggs onto the spawning substrate — plant leaves, fine roots, or aquarium spawning mops — before separating. Spawning is incremental, occurring over days or weeks in small batches rather than in a single large clutch event. This drawn-out spawning pattern is characteristic of non-annual Aphyosemion and prolongs the male's opportunity to court multiple females in a shared territory.

Breeding

Eggs of Aphyosemion tirbaki are adhesive and incubate in water rather than in moist peat substrate with a diapause phase. The AKA reference documentation records a water-incubation period of approximately 21 days at 70 °F. Incubation at slightly warmer temperatures — 72–75 °F, typical for the genus in captivity — would shorten this to roughly 14–18 days. The eggs do not require a dry period and should be left to develop in the water-filled spawning container or, if transferred, in a shallow dish of conditioned soft water with a trace of antifungal treatment.

Fry are relatively small at hatching but are immediately free-swimming and accept first foods within hours. Newly hatched Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and the finest paramecium cultures are appropriate starter foods. Like all non-annual Aphyosemion, A. tirbaki fry grow steadily without the compressed life-history urgency of annual species, and juveniles reach sexual maturity over several months. Adults are comparatively long-lived for the genus — a distinguishing trait of the non-annual life-history strategy.

Breeding at soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, <5° dGH) and cooler temperatures (68–72 °F) follows the natural conditions of the type locality and is recommended for consistent reproductive success.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion tirbaki is a specialist's fish, sought by killifish hobbyists through the organised killifish club network — notably the American Killifish Association and its European counterparts — rather than the general retail trade. Specimens are typically distributed as eggs or young fish among collectors maintaining strain-coded material; the EBT 96/7 collection code identifies lineage tracing directly to the type-locality collection.

Housing requirements follow the standard for the ogoense group: a small aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal is adequate for a pair or trio, densely planted or fitted with fine spawning mops and floating vegetation to mimic the shaded forest-stream environment. Water should be soft (less than 5° dGH) and mildly acidic (pH 6.0–6.8), kept at 68–73 °F — the cool end of what most tropical aquaria run, and important for the health and longevity of this cool-upland species. Over-warm conditions (above 79 °F) shorten lifespan markedly.

Tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceful, and similarly sized. Many keepers maintain single-species tanks to protect strain integrity, prevent hybridisation with related ogoense-group species, and facilitate egg collection. The species is not aggressive toward non-killifish tankmates of appropriate size. Providing a dark substrate and subdued lighting, with leaf litter or peat filtration to gently acidify and stain the water, brings out the best colouration in males and replicates the tannin-stained micro-habitat of Tsotandzala.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion tirbaki as Endangered (EN) under criterion B1ab(iii), reflecting an extremely small estimated extent of occurrence combined with continuing decline in habitat quality. The assessment was completed in February 2009. The criterion captures the core conservation problem: all known populations occupy a tightly clustered set of localities within a single sub-basin of the Ogooué drainage in interior Gabon, and any significant degradation of those specific stream catchments would likely extirpate the species entirely.

Identified threats include mining and quarrying activity in the region, domestic and urban wastewater discharge, industrial and military effluents, and agricultural and forestry run-off — the suite of diffuse anthropogenic pressures that characterise development in the Gabonese interior. No specific conservation actions for A. tirbaki were recorded at the time of assessment, and the population trend is listed as unknown. Gabon's interior forests remain among the least disturbed in Central Africa, but increased mining and logging concession activity in the Ogooué basin represents a credible ongoing risk.

In the hobby, the maintained EBT 96/7 strain held by dedicated killifish societies constitutes an unofficial ex-situ reserve. Several ogoense-group species are known almost exclusively from captive populations maintained through club networks, and A. tirbaki's situation is not far from that threshold. Retaining genetically diverse, strain-coded captive populations remains the most practical near-term hedge against the risk of wild extinction.
