The Mweru lampeye is a small, schooling killifish of the upper Congo basin, native to the shallow swampy margins of Lake Mweru, Lake Mweru Wantipa, and the river systems that connect them — the Luapula, Lualaba, Chambezi, and Luombo drainages spanning southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and northeastern Zambia. Like all members of its procatopodid lampeye clan, it is a non-annual fish of permanent waters, spawning continuously throughout the year by attaching a few adhesive eggs at a time among submerged vegetation, and wearing the iridescent blue-green light organ above the eye that gives the entire group their common name. Assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2009, it nonetheless faces real pressures from drawhauling fisheries on Lake Mweru and from water abstraction that threatens the shallow seasonal wetlands it depends on.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola moeruensis was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1914, with the type locality recorded from Lake Mweru and the upper Lualaba river drainage in southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The authority is presented in parentheses to indicate the species was originally placed in a different genus; the valid combination under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Lacustricola moeruensis (Boulenger, 1914).

The genus Lacustricola belongs to the family Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Procatopodids are strictly non-annual killifish of permanent standing and flowing waters across sub-Saharan Africa, distinguishable from the often-celebrated annual Nothobranchiidae by their continuous breeding cycle and the absence of diapausing embryos. Lacustricola is the largest lampeye genus, encompassing small, schooling species broadly distributed across Central and East Africa.

A 2024–2026 academic review of cyprinodontiform fishes in the upper Congo drainage (published on ResearchGate) confirmed L. moeruensis in the Luapula and Lualaba drainages and included it in a broader reassessment of procatopodid diversity in the region. No synonyms are currently recognised for this species under the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Lacustricola moeruensis is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in in standard length (FishBase). The body plan is typical of the lampeye group: elongated and fusiform, with an upturned mouth indicating a surface-oriented feeding posture, and a slightly flattened dorsal profile.

The defining feature of all lampeyes is the iridescent blue-green photophore-like patch situated above the pupil of each eye — a reflective tapetum that causes the eye to glow with an intense blue-green or silver-blue light when caught by oblique illumination. In life this gives the fish a jewel-like quality disproportionate to its small size. Body colouration is typically silvery to pale olive on the flanks, often with a faint metallic sheen along the lateral line, and translucent fins that may carry subtle iridescent edging in males.

Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle. Males tend to be slimmer and may show stronger iridescence in the fins and body during courtship; females are noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. The difference in intensity of the eye-spot is often useful for sexing individuals at close range.

Habitat

Lacustricola moeruensis occupies the swampy, shallow margins of lakes and their associated drainage systems in the upper Congo basin. The confirmed native range (FishBase; IUCN 2009) encompasses Lake Mweru and the Luapula River (shared by DRC and Zambia), Lake Mweru Wantipa, Lake Young, the Luombo River, and the Chambezi River — all within the upper Congo catchment in southeastern DRC and northeastern Zambia.

Within these systems the species favours low-energy, vegetated environments: lake fringes choked with emergent and submerged macrophytes, papyrus swamps, slow-flowing river backwaters, and the shallow grassy margins of seasonal floodplains that connect the main lake basins. Water chemistry follows the moderate, slightly soft profile typical of Rift-fringe drainage at this altitude: temperature 68–79 °F and pH 6.5–7.2 (FishBase), with moderate mineral content reflecting the granitic and sedimentary catchment rather than the extreme alkalinity of the deep Rift lakes.

The species is a schooling fish in nature, moving in groups through open water near vegetated margins where it finds both food and spawning substrate. Its presence in multiple lake basins connected by drainage systems suggests some dispersal tolerance, though each basin population may be effectively isolated during low-water periods.

Feeding

As with most small procatopodid lampeyes, L. moeruensis is a microfeeder, taking zooplankton, small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and emerging surface insects. The upturned mouth is adapted for surface and near-surface feeding — picking off small organisms at or just beneath the water film — though the fish also forages through the water column among vegetation.

In the aquarium the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily: artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, micro-worms, and finely crushed quality dried foods. Because of its small adult size, food particle dimensions matter; oversized pellets or frozen cubes must be broken down. Offering a variety of live and frozen invertebrates maintains colour and condition and supports natural foraging behaviour.

Mating

Lacustricola moeruensis is a non-annual, continuous spawner — it does not undergo seasonal population die-offs or produce diapausing eggs. Reproduction follows the pattern characteristic of Lacustricola and the broader procatopodid lampeye lineage: repeated small spawning events distributed over an extended period, rather than a discrete annual spawning pulse.

Courtship is active and visible. Males approach females from the rear and side, displaying with extended and fanned fins to show off the iridescent body and eye-flash. The pair aligns side-by-side in a characteristic S-curved posture — documented across lampeye genera — and a brief spawning embrace follows, during which a small number of adhesive eggs are fertilised and deposited. The male repeats this behaviour with multiple females across days and weeks, producing a continuous trickle of offspring rather than a single large clutch. The American Killifish Association records eight distinct collection localities for this species, reflecting its popularity in the specialist hobby and the value placed on maintaining pure locality strains.

Breeding

Each spawning embrace produces only a few adhesive eggs, which the female deposits on fine-leaved plants, moss, or root tangles near the surface. The eggs adhere to the substrate and are left without parental attention. Incubation takes approximately two to three weeks at water temperatures in the 72–77 °F range, as documented for plant-spawning African lampeyes (TFH Magazine). Fry hatch as miniature versions of the adults and are immediately free-swimming.

In the aquarium, breeding is straightforward. A densely planted species tank with java moss, fine-leaved stem plants, or a spawning mop provides adequate egg-deposition sites. Because adults may consume eggs and small fry on occasion, eggs or mops can be transferred to a separate rearing vessel for higher survival rates. First foods for newly hatched fry are paramecia or commercial micro-fry foods; nauplii can be introduced within the first week. The continuous spawning mode means a well-maintained group will produce fry steadily throughout the year without any seasonal conditioning.

The AKA documents multiple collection strains in hobbyist hands — including Lake Moero, Lake Mweru, Lake Bangweolo, Kakielo River, Kasomeno, Kifumbe, Mwawe River, and ZAM 92/2 — and six articles in the Journal of the American Killifish Association (spanning 1967–2011) attest to a sustained hobbyist interest in the species across decades.

In the aquarium

Lacustricola moeruensis is an undemanding and rewarding killifish for the specialist keeper. A small species tank of 10–15 US gal suits a trio or small group well; its schooling nature means it is best kept in a group of six or more individuals, which reduces male-male aggression and encourages the natural shoaling behaviour that makes the blue-green eye-flash visible at its most spectacular.

Water conditions should mirror the moderate parameters of its home waters: temperature 68–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Good filtration with gentle flow is ideal — the fish inhabits low-energy swampy margins in nature and does not appreciate strong currents. Dense planting with fine-leaved species (Java moss, hornwort, Cabomba) provides spawning sites and visual security. The species is peaceful and can be housed with other small, similarly sized non-aggressive fish from compatible water conditions, though a species-only setup maximises breeding success and display quality.

Specialist killifish societies, especially the American Killifish Association, have maintained captive populations and locality records for this species for over fifty years. Obtaining fish through AKA networks or European killifish societies (EKS affiliates) is the most reliable route to true-locality stock and is preferable to unverified commercial lines.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment of 2009 (assessor: Moelants, T.) places Lacustricola moeruensis in the Least Concern (LC) category, reflecting its moderately broad distribution across the Lake Mweru basin and associated drainages in DRC and Zambia. Population trend is listed as unknown.

Despite the Least Concern designation, the IUCN assessment identifies specific pressures on the species and its habitat: overfishing in the Luapula River and Lake Mweru using drawnets (which are largely undiscriminating and harvest small fish alongside target species); dam construction diverting water for hydroelectric generation; and water withdrawal for agricultural irrigation that reduces the water levels of the shallow stream and wetland habitats the species depends on. These pressures are particularly acute in the Luapula Valley, a region of significant artisanal and semi-commercial fishery activity.

The species' reliance on the swampy, shallow fringes of lake systems makes it inherently vulnerable to drawdown and wetland drainage — habitats that are often treated as marginal or expendable in fisheries and water-management planning. Continued monitoring of population status in both DRC and Zambia is warranted, particularly as the Lake Mweru basin faces increasing agricultural and hydroelectric development pressure in the decades ahead.
