The Lualaba lampeye is a small, schooling killifish endemic to the upper Lualaba River system of south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where it inhabits the quiet, vegetated margins of streams, wetlands, and the shallow waters of the Upemba lakes within Upemba National Park. Like all lampeyes, it is named for the iridescent blue-green crescent of light-reflecting tissue that arches above the eye — a feature amplified under aquarium lighting and serving as a species-recognition signal within the school. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2009, this non-annual killifish is a continuous spawner that deposits small clutches of adhesive eggs among fine aquatic vegetation over an extended period rather than employing the diapausing egg strategy of true annual killies.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola lualabaensis was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1947, based on material collected from the upper Lualaba drainage in what was then the Belgian Congo. The parenthetical authority notation — (Poll, 1947) — indicates the species has been moved from its original genus since description. It now sits in the genus Lacustricola, the largest genus of African lampeye killifishes within the family Procatopodidae, a group sometimes treated as a subfamily (Procatopodinae) within the broader Poeciliidae but increasingly accorded full family rank.

The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Lacustricola lualabaensis (Poll, 1947). The genus name Lacustricola is Latin for 'lake-dweller' (lacus, lake; -cola, inhabitant), reflecting the tendency of many species in the genus to inhabit lentic and semi-lentic waters rather than fast-flowing streams. The specific epithet lualabaensis is a toponym formed from 'Lualaba', the name of the upper Congo River above the junction with the Luvua River, combined with the Latin locative suffix -ensis, meaning 'from' or 'of'. The name therefore translates simply as 'from the Lualaba'.

Within Lacustricola, lualabaensis belongs to a large radiation of small procatopodid killifishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. The genus contains numerous species of similar body plan and modest size, differentiated principally by pigmentation details, scale counts, and the extent and colouration of the supraorbital light organ — the defining lampeye feature.

Morphology

The Lualaba lampeye reaches approximately 1.5 in total length (FishBase), consistent with the small-bodied profile typical of lampeye killifishes. The body is slender and laterally compressed, with a rounded snout, a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and midwater feeding, and a single dorsal fin positioned well back over the body — a characteristic Lacustricola body plan.

The most conspicuous feature is the supraorbital light organ: a crescent-shaped patch of specialised, iridescent tissue positioned above the pupil of each eye. In life, this organ reflects available light to produce a vivid blue-green or turquoise gleam, particularly pronounced under side-lighting and acting as a recognition cue within the school. The remainder of the body is modestly coloured — a translucent to pale olive or silvery flank typical of small procatopodids, with scale edges that may show a faint metallic sheen.

Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle. Males are typically more slender and may display more vivid supraorbital iridescence or slightly more developed fin colouration during spawning condition. Females are somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Lacustricola lualabaensis is native to the upper Lualaba River system in south-eastern DRC, including the Mabwe River and the Upemba lakes group — the cluster of shallow, seasonally connected lakes and wetlands within and around Upemba National Park, centred on the Kamalondo Depression. Hobbyist records also note collection localities at Maka, Lake Sangwa, Kabelwe, and Kikondja, all within the same DRC basin.

This is a freshwater species of quiet, vegetated water — the still to gently flowing margins of lakes, floodplain pools, and sheltered stream reaches where emergent and submerged aquatic vegetation is abundant. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic: associated with the lower water column and vegetation rather than strictly open water, though it schools in midwater as conditions allow. It is non-migratory and non-annual, occurring in permanent water bodies rather than the ephemeral seasonal pools colonised by annual killifishes.

The upper Lualaba basin lies in the Congolian highland transition zone, and water chemistry at the collection localities is typically clear and moderately soft to neutral, reflecting the geology of the Katanga highlands. The Upemba lakes are ecologically significant — the park supports 247 native fish species, of which approximately 45 are endemic, and L. lualabaensis is among that endemic fraction.

Feeding

Like most small procatopodid killifishes, the Lualaba lampeye is a microphagous predator feeding primarily on small invertebrates taken in the water column and at the surface. The upturned mouth is well suited to picking off small insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and tiny crustaceans from the surface film and from the water immediately below it — a feeding niche shared broadly across the lampeye group.

In the aquarium, the species accepts a variety of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and similar fare. Small, good-quality dried foods (micro-pellets, fine flake) are also accepted by acclimatised individuals, though variety with live and frozen foods maintains peak condition. Because of the small adult size, food particle size must be appropriate — even large dried flake should be crumbled before offering.

Mating

Lacustricola lualabaensis is a non-annual, continuous spawner: it does not produce diapausing eggs buried in seasonal substrate, but rather deposits small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine aquatic vegetation and root tangles throughout the year, consistent with the lampeye breeding mode observed across Procatopodidae.

Males court females with lateral displays that orient the iridescent supraorbital organ toward the female — the light organ is understood to play a direct role in mate recognition and selection within the school. Spawning involves brief pairing events in which one or a few eggs are deposited at a time, adhesive and anchored to plant fibres, moss, or root material. Because this is a continuous process rather than a synchronised mass-spawning, a breeding group will deposit eggs across multiple sessions over days and weeks rather than producing a single large clutch.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Lacustricola lualabaensis is bred in a manner typical of non-annual lampeyes. A small group — one or two males with several females — is maintained in a well-planted tank or one furnished with fine-leaved artificial plants, Java moss, or spawning mops. Eggs are deposited individually or in small batches, adhering to plant surfaces. Because adults will consume eggs and newly hatched fry, the standard practice is either to move spawning substrate (mops or moss) to a separate rearing container regularly, or to use a breeding trap or dense vegetation that shields eggs from the adult school.

Incubation is temperature-dependent; in typical tropical conditions (75–81 °F) eggs hatch in ten to fourteen days. Fry are small at hatching and require fine first foods: infusoria, paramecia, or commercial fry-rearing products sized appropriately for the tiny gape. Artemia nauplii and micro-worms can be introduced as the fry grow over the following weeks. Growth is relatively steady and the young fish begin displaying the supraorbital light organ as they approach juvenile colouration. Clutch sizes per session are modest — a hallmark of the continuous strategy — but a productive group will produce a steady trickle of offspring over months.

In the aquarium

The Lualaba lampeye is a specialist's fish, uncommon in the mainstream trade but maintained by killifish enthusiasts through the American Killifish Association and British Killifish Association networks, where it is occasionally available through club auctions and member exchanges. It is best kept as a small school of six or more individuals, in a species tank or with other similarly sized, peaceful fish that will not outcompete it for food.

A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding group. Filtration should provide gentle flow — a sponge filter is ideal, avoiding the strong currents that can stress small schooling killies. Dark substrate, dim lighting with floating plants, and a tight-fitting lid (to prevent the jumping typical of small killifishes) complete the setup. Water chemistry should reflect the moderately soft, near-neutral conditions of the Katanga highlands: temperature in the range of 72–79 °F, pH around 6.5–7.5. Regular small water changes maintain quality without the dramatic parameter shifts that can stress continuously spawning fish.

The species is not demanding in captivity once established, and its sparkling supraorbital light organs make it a rewarding subject under appropriate lighting. Its rarity in commerce makes it a fish primarily for hobbyists with an interest in African killifishes and a connection to the specialist club network.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Lacustricola lualabaensis as Least Concern in 2009, citing a distribution across the upper Lualaba system that — while not extensive — was not considered to meet the thresholds for a threatened category at that time, and noting no specific known threats at the time of assessment. The species is endemic to south-eastern DRC and closely associated with the Upemba National Park wetland complex.

Upemba National Park is a protected area on paper, but like many Central African parks it faces significant practical conservation challenges. Research published in Diversity (MDPI, 2023) on the ichthyofauna of the park documents ongoing anthropogenic pressure on the Kamalondo Depression wetlands — the core habitat of L. lualabaensis and dozens of other endemic fishes — from artisanal fishing, agricultural encroachment, and broader instability in the region. The park's 45 endemic fish species, including this lampeye, depend on the integrity of those shallow lake and wetland habitats remaining intact.

The 2009 assessment predates more than fifteen years of continued pressure on the region's wetlands. The narrow endemism of this species — restricted to a single river system within a park facing real management challenges — means that the Least Concern designation should not be read as ecological security. The species has no meaningful presence in established ex-situ conservation programmes, and its persistence depends on the health of the Upemba wetland complex.
