Taxonomy & naming
Austrolebias bellottii was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1881 under the name Cynolebias bellottii, with the authority consequently written in parentheses because the species has since been moved to a different genus. The holotype male, measuring 2 in standard length, is deposited in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna. The transfer to Austrolebias was formalised by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1998 as part of a wholesale revision of Neotropical annual killifishes; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records Austrolebias bellottii (Steindachner, 1881) as the valid combination.
The genus Austrolebias is a large South American assemblage of substrate-spawning annual killies united by their diapause egg biology and their restriction to the temporary pools of the Gran Pampas, Chaco, and adjacent lowland river systems. The American Killifish Association documents 37 distinct collection localities for A. bellottii across Argentina and Uruguay, and hobbyists sometimes track these locality variants under collection codes tied to specific collecting sites (for example, Punta Lara, San Martín, Maschwitz, Villa Soriano). The species is not considered to have formally named subspecies, but locality differences in colour and meristics are well known among specialists.

Morphology

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males are larger, deeper-bodied, and dramatically more colourful. Habitat
The native range of Austrolebias bellottii encompasses the lower Paraná River basin and the Uruguay River basin in Argentina and Uruguay — the seasonal floodplain wetlands of the La Plata drainage system. It is a fish of temporary pools: shallow depressions, roadside ditches, flooded grasslands, and seasonal marshes that fill with rainfall during the warm wet season and dry out entirely in winter. Feeding

Mating
Austrolebias bellottii follows the classic annual killifish mating system: males are polygamous and actively display to females, and the species spawns directly into the sediment substrate rather than among plants or in open water. A male in breeding condition intensifies his coloration and pursues females with lateral displays, fanning his fins to show the iridescent body pattern to maximum effect. The spawning dive is the defining act of annual killi reproduction. The pair dive together into the soft substrate — peat moss, coco-peat, or natural mud — and the male curves his body around the female. Breeding
The eggs of Austrolebias bellottii are drought-resistant and undergo diapause — a state of arrested development that allows the embryo to survive the complete desiccation of its natal pool during the dry season. In nature, the adults die as the pool dries out in winter; the eggs, buried in the anaerobic sediment layer, remain viable for months and resume development when rain refills the pool, typically hatching within hours of re-wetting.
In the aquarium, the standard method mirrors this natural cycle. A spawning tank of 2.5–6.5 US gal is furnished with a deep layer of peat moss or coco-peat as the spawning medium. The pair are conditioned on live food and kept at 64–75 °F; spawning occurs freely. After six to eight weeks, the peat is removed, squeezed slightly damp, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored in a dark location at room temperature (approximately 68–72 °F) for the incubation period. Foersch's experimental data indicate that embryos develop visible eye spots after 14–18 days at a constant 86 °F; under cooler storage conditions, incubation can extend to five or six months. After the storage period, the peat is re-wetted with aged water and the fry hatch within hours. The fry are relatively large for a killifish and immediately accept Artemia nauplii as a first food. A dedicated spawning tank of 2.5–6.5 US gal per pair, kept cool and furnished with a thick peat or coco-peat layer, is the standard setup. Planted tanks with rooted or floating vegetation provide cover and reduce stress.
Because A. bellottii is an annual species, the aquarist must manage the full life cycle: regular peat collection, dry storage of batches, and scheduled re-wetting to hatch successive generations. The NT designation reflects the species' moderate range size combined with continuing decline in extent of occurrence, area of occupancy, and quality of habitat — the criteria that define a species tracking toward Vulnerable status.
The core threat to A. bellottii is the destruction and fragmentation of the seasonal wetland pools of the La Plata lowlands. Agricultural intensification in the Argentine Pampas and Uruguayan grasslands has converted enormous areas of natural floodplain to cropped or improved pasture land; the small, shallow temporary pools that A. bellottii inhabits are among the first features removed by drainage, levelling, or infilling. The introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) into seasonal water bodies across South America poses an additional threat documented across multiple annual killifish species, as Gambusia compete for the same small-invertebrate food base and may prey on killifish fry.
