Austrolebias charrua is a seasonal annual killifish native to the shallow temporary pools and flooded grasslands of the Laguna dos Patos–Mirim coastal lagoon complex straddling the Brazil–Uruguay border. Like all South American annual killies, it exists in a constant race against the dry season: adults spawn in soft substrate, die when their pools evaporate, and leave behind buried, drought-resistant eggs that lie dormant through months of desiccation before hatching when the rains return. A species of conservation concern — the entire Austrolebias genus is disproportionately represented on the IUCN Red List — A. charrua is further threatened by agricultural runoff from soy farming and by the hydrological fragmentation of the low-lying wetlands it depends on. A 2023 taxonomic revision placed the species in the resurrected genus Garcialebias, though Austrolebias charrua remains the name most commonly encountered in the aquarium literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias charrua was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Marcelo Loureiro Cheffe in 2001. The type locality is the Chui creek (arroio Chui) on the road to Barra do Chui in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, collected in July 1998. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the valid combination as Austrolebias charrua (Costa & Cheffe, 2001), and the authority appears in parentheses because the species was originally described in a genus that has subsequently been reorganised.

A 2023 phylogenetic revision proposed transferring several Austrolebias species — including A. charrua — to the resurrected genus Garcialebias, reflecting molecular evidence that they form a clade distinct from the Austrolebias sensu stricto nucleus. The name Garcialebias charrua consequently appears in some recent hobbyist and faunal-list sources. Pending broader adoption of that revision in Catalog of Fishes, Austrolebias charrua is retained here as the working name, consistent with the literature most accessible to aquarists.

The specific epithet charrua commemorates the Charrúa, the indigenous people of the Río de la Plata region who inhabited the lands around the type locality in what is now southern Brazil and Uruguay. The species belongs to the family Rivulidae (South American killifishes), subfamily Cynolebiasinae — the annual peat-spawners of the Pampas, Chaco, and coastal lowlands.

Morphology

A. charrua is a small, moderately deep-bodied killifish reaching approximately 2 in standard length, with males approaching the upper end and females typically smaller. The body plan is typical of the Austrolebias complex: robust through the shoulders, laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and an upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the surface of shallow water.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as is characteristic of annual killies. Males display a dark greenish-blue to blue-grey body overlaid with irregular pale blue or white spots and vertical bars, a patterning that varies across populations. The fins are boldly patterned with dark edges. Females are cryptic: brownish-grey with faint mottling, a coloration that offers camouflage in the leaf litter and detritus of the seasonal pools they inhabit. This level of dimorphism is diagnostically reliable — in any mixed group of annual Austrolebias, males and females are immediately distinguishable.

Habitat

A. charrua occupies shallow, seasonally inundated grassland pools in the lowland coastal complex linking Laguna dos Patos and Laguna Mirim in southernmost Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and extending into adjacent eastern Uruguay (Rocha Department, including around Castillos and along Ruta 18 near the Brazilian border). These water bodies are temporary by nature — formed by seasonal rainfall flooding low-lying pampa grassland — and typically dry out completely each summer, leaving no permanent water refuge.

The pools are shallow, often barely tens of centimetres deep, with soft mud, clay, or peat substrates accumulating layers of decomposing vegetation. Water chemistry in this landscape tends toward mildly acidic to near-neutral: FishBase records approximately 77 °F, pH 6.5, and about 5 dGH hardness, which is consistent with softwater, modestly acidic grassland pools fed by rainfall and organic decomposition rather than hard calcareous groundwater. Aquatic plant cover may be sparse, but organic detritus — the breeding substrate — is plentiful.

The species shares its habitat with a handful of other annual killifish and with invertebrates that likewise complete their life cycles before the pools vanish. The biotope is not blackwater in the Amazonian sense; it is turbid, organically productive, and warm in summer, cooling sharply through winter.

Feeding

In the wild, A. charrua is an opportunistic micro-predator of the kind typical across the annual killifish guild. The shallow, productive pools it inhabits support dense populations of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton, and worms — and these form the bulk of the diet. The upturned mouth is adapted for surface or mid-water feeding rather than benthic grubbing.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: daphnia, artemia, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and small aquatic insects are ideal. Dried foods are taken by some individuals once conditioned, though live and frozen foods are strongly preferred and produce better condition and reproductive readiness. Because wild adults have a life expectancy measured in weeks to a few months under field conditions, regular feeding with nutritious live foods is important to support the rapid reproductive effort the species undertakes throughout the wet season.

Mating

Courtship in A. charrua follows the pattern common to annual Austrolebias: males are persistently aggressive toward females and toward rival males. A displaying male fans his fins, intensifies his colours, and pursues the female persistently. The courtship drive is strong but female receptivity is not constant — females must be offered cover and retreat space, and a male left alone with a female for too long will harass her to exhaustion or death.

It Rains Fishes and other hobbyist sources document males of this species as notably aggressive, with egg production lower than in some related species. A ratio of at least two females per male is advisable in captivity, and the keeper should watch for signs of overly persistent pursuit. Spawning dives occur throughout the wet season in nature; in the aquarium, pairs may spawn repeatedly over several months if kept in good condition.

Breeding

A. charrua is an obligate annual soil-spawner. The mating act is a spawning dive: the male and female press side by side and plunge together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — where the female expels one or several eggs that the male simultaneously fertilises before both fish resurface. The eggs are buried several centimetres below the surface and are left entirely without parental attention. Each spawning dive produces a small number of eggs; spawning is repeated over many sessions across the season rather than released in a single mass event.

The buried eggs enter diapause — a state of developmental arrest — that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of the pool during the dry season. Diapause involves multiple arrested stages in embryonic development, a mechanism documented for Austrolebias and other cynolebiasine genera that allows the egg bank to persist across the months-long dry period and synchronise hatching with pool refilling. Research on the genus (PMC 8177498) notes that the embryo bank strategy also buffers populations against temporary versus permanent pool loss events.

In the aquarium, the standard approach is to maintain the pair over a peat or coconut-coir spawning medium laid several centimetres deep on the tank bottom, allow spawning for three to six weeks, then remove the medium, allow it to partially dry, and store it sealed in a dark, moderately cool location (around 68–72 °F) for a minimum of six weeks. It Rains Fishes documents successful hatching at 77 °F in approximately six weeks, with incubation potentially extending to five or six months at cooler temperatures. Re-wetting the medium triggers hatching; fry are relatively large and accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii immediately. Sexual maturity is reached in about five to six weeks.

In the aquarium

A. charrua is regarded as a moderately challenging annual killi suited to experienced keepers rather than beginners. It Rains Fishes notes the species is sensitive to transport stress and abrupt water changes — acclimation must be slow and careful. A dedicated species tank is strongly preferred: a small aquarium of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid (annual killies jump readily), minimal or no filtration (gentle sponge filter at most), and a thick layer of soft peat or coconut coir on the bottom as the spawning medium. Tannin-stained water from peat filtration or Indian almond leaves approximates the natural environment and reduces stress.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral: the parameters recorded from the wild (around pH 6.5, 5 dGH, 72–77 °F) are a reasonable target. Temperature should not exceed 79 °F for extended periods; the species comes from the temperate Pampas and appreciates a modest cool-down in winter (to around 64–68 °F), which appears to stimulate spawning condition when warmed again. Males must never be kept together without sufficient space and female cover; aggression is intense.

The reward for meeting its needs is the spectacle of the spawning dive itself — one of the most distinctive behaviours in freshwater fishkeeping — and the satisfaction of completing the full annual life cycle: spawning, storing the peat, re-wetting, and raising the next generation. Egg production per clutch is low and fry survival demands attention, but the species is not impossible for a prepared keeper. A. charrua is not widely available in the trade; it circulates primarily through specialist killifish societies and exchanges.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Austrolebias charrua as Near Threatened (NT), consistent with the broad conservation crisis facing the annual killifishes of the Pampas and coastal South America. Research published in PMC 8177498 notes that approximately 48 species of Austrolebias are distributed across the lowlands of the Patos–Mirim coastal lagoon complex and adjacent drainages, with a disproportionate number in threatened or near-threatened categories — the combination of tiny, isolated seasonal pools and a species composition that may be endemic to individual drainage systems makes the group particularly vulnerable.

For A. charrua specifically, the principal threats are hydrological: drainage and conversion of the low-lying grassland pools it inhabits for soy and rice agriculture has reduced and fragmented suitable habitat across Rio Grande do Sul and eastern Uruguay. Research in ScienceDirect documents the species' sensitivity to pesticide runoff, specifically Roundup (glyphosate), which induces measurable oxidative stress at concentrations consistent with modern soy-belt agriculture — a direct reflection of the land-use pressure around its remaining habitats. Pollution from agricultural chemicals represents a concrete, documented threat beyond simple habitat loss.

Because A. charrua is restricted to the narrow coastal lowland strip between Laguna dos Patos and Laguna Mirim and the immediately adjacent Uruguay borderlands, any further loss of temporary grassland pools within that zone carries an elevated extinction risk. The species is maintained by specialist killifish societies as a living ex-situ population, and responsible hobbyist breeding — with regular exchanges to maintain genetic diversity — serves a genuine conservation function for annual killies that face irreversible habitat loss in the field.
