Taxonomy & naming
Austrolebias litzi was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2006, based on material collected on 31 August 1999 by Costa and Bacellar at the arroio Arenal, approximately 2 mi from the city of Santa Maria along the BR-392 highway, within the upper rio Jacuí drainage of the laguna dos Patos system in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) originally validated the name as Austrolebias litzi Costa 2006, with subsequent confirmation by Bertaco et al. in 2016.
In 2023 Alonso and colleagues published a molecular phylogenetic revision of the South American annual killifish clade that had been broadly assigned to Austrolebias, recovering several well-supported lineages that warranted generic recognition. Under that arrangement the valid binomial for this species becomes Matilebias litzi (Costa 2006), with the authority in parentheses indicating that the combination has changed since original description. Because much of the aquarium literature and hobbyist database records continue to use the original Austrolebias placement, both names remain in wide circulation. This article follows the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.
The species is placed in the family Rivulidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes — the toothcarps — alongside the other South American annual killifishes. It belongs to a genus (Matilebias) of modest size, with around thirteen species recognised at present according to hobbyist accounts and genus overviews from killifish specialists.
Morphology
Austrolebias litzi is a small, compact fish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males and 1 in for females; the largest wild specimen on record measured 1.5 in SL. Hobbyist sources cite an aquarium maximum nearer 2 in, likely reflecting continued growth in stable captive conditions. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately deep, compressed laterally, with a relatively large head and upturned mouth adapted to surface and mid-water feeding on small invertebrates.
Males are the more conspicuous sex. The flanks are blue-grey to greyish-blue and are traversed by twelve to twenty-two vertical rows of vivid, iridescent blue spots — a pattern that is characteristic of the species and visually striking even at a small size. The unpaired fins carry blue spots concentrated on the basal half, and the paired fins are suffused with bright blue. Females are cryptically coloured — yellowish-brown with small dark spots that are smaller than the eye diameter — a pattern shared with most female Austrolebias and Matilebias and providing effective concealment among leaf litter and detritus on the pool floor. Sexual dimorphism is thus strongly expressed in colouration, as is universal in the genus.
Habitat
This species is known only from the upper rio Jacuí drainage within the laguna dos Patos catchment, the largest coastal lagoon system in South America, located in Rio Grande do Sul state in the far south of Brazil. The type locality is the arroio Arenal near Santa Maria; additional material has been collected from the rio Vacacaí floodplains, which drain into the same lagoon system further downstream. The total known range is therefore narrow — confined to a small area of subtropical lowland in a single Brazilian state.
The habitat consists of temporary, shallow, seasonal pools and floodplain ponds embedded in subtropical grassland (Pampa biome). These pools fill during the rainy season and dry out completely every year, imposing the annual cycle that defines the reproductive strategy of the entire Austrolebias and Matilebias radiation. Water temperatures at breeding sites range from roughly 64–75 °F. The substrate is soft peat, mud, and organic detritus — the medium into which eggs are deposited. Dissolved oxygen levels in shallow, warm, densely vegetated or algae-rich seasonal pools can fall low, and the small size and sedentary benthic habits of annual killies suit them well to such conditions.
No specific field measurements of pH or hardness for the type locality are recorded in available sources. The subtropical Rio Grande do Sul lowlands generally produce soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in their seasonal pools; hobbyist accounts recommend pH 6.0–7.0 and soft to medium hardness for captive husbandry, consistent with conditions in comparable pools in the region.
Feeding
In the wild, Austrolebias litzi feeds as a generalist predator on the small invertebrates available in seasonal pools: aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and similar prey. Annual killifishes in the Austrolebias radiation are typical ambush and pursuit feeders, taking live prey from the water column and surface.
In captivity the species accepts live foods readily and performs best on a varied diet of appropriately sized live or frozen items. Daphnia, mosquito larvae (both live and frozen bloodworm), white worms (Enchytraeids), and micro-worms are all reported as suitable and eagerly taken. Because the fish is small — rarely exceeding 1.5–2 in — prey items must be scaled to fit the mouth. Regular feeding with live or freshly thawed foods maintains peak colouration in males and supports the rapid growth rate required to reach spawning condition within weeks of hatching — a necessity given the compressed annual life cycle.
Mating
Austrolebias litzi is a substrate-spawning annual killifish, and its mating behaviour is built entirely around the cycle of pool filling and drying. When the rains refill the seasonal pools and eggs hatch from the buried substrate, the young fish grow at a rapid pace; males begin to show full adult colouration within a few weeks, and the pair bond and spawning readiness develop quickly. Sexual maturity is reached at approximately five to six weeks of age — a remarkably compressed timeline driven by the certainty that the pool will dry again within months.
Courtship is typical of the genus: the male, displaying his full complement of iridescent blue spots on flanks and fins, approaches the female with lateral displays intended to assess and stimulate her. The female signals receptivity by moving toward the substrate, and the male takes position alongside her for a spawning embrace. The pair are in contact laterally, and together they dive into the soft mud or peat at the pool floor, where eggs and sperm are released simultaneously into the substrate. The act of diving buries the fertilised eggs in the anaerobic mud, where they are protected from desiccation and predation during the coming dry season.
Breeding
Once eggs are deposited in the substrate they enter a state of diapause — arrested embryonic development — that allows them to survive the complete drying of the pool. Incubation time before hatching depends on temperature and the duration of the dry phase; hobbyist sources report a range of six weeks to five or more months. In the aquarium, breeders harvest the peat or coir spawning medium after a few weeks of spawning activity, allow it to semi-dry, and store it sealed in a plastic bag at room temperature for the appropriate diapause period before re-wetting it to trigger hatching. This replication of the natural drying and re-flooding cycle is the defining skill of keeping annual killifishes.
Adults in captivity spawn readily in a small aquarium of 2.5–6.5 US gal furnished with a deep layer of soft peat moss or coconut coir as a spawning substrate. Water temperature of 64–75 °F is recommended. The lifespan in nature is eight to eleven months — determined chiefly by the length of the rainy season — and captive fish rarely live longer. Because the full adult life is lived in one season, fish spawn persistently and produce many clutches. Fry hatch small and require appropriately fine first foods; they grow quickly under good feeding conditions and can reproduce within weeks, completing the cycle.
In the aquarium
Austrolebias litzi is kept by specialist killifish hobbyists and is one of the smaller and more manageable South American annual species. Its modest size (under 2 in) means it can be maintained in tanks as small as 2.5–5.5 US gal per pair, though slightly larger volumes improve water stability. The key requirements are a deep soft substrate for spawning, subdued lighting, and a regular programme of peat harvesting and storage to collect and incubate the eggs. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as killies are capable jumpers.
The American Killifish Association (AKA) maintains a species profile and recognises the fish as a legitimate collection target. It is available through specialist killifish societies and at killi shows, where hobbyists exchange both fish and incubated peat packets. Water quality should be maintained with regular partial changes; the fish is not demanding about chemistry within the broadly neutral, soft-to-moderate range. A pair or a single male with two females is the typical social unit; males may quarrel in close quarters, and because both sexes are small and the male's displays are the primary ornamental attraction, a species-only setup is standard.
The species is not a beginner fish in the sense that its care cycle differs fundamentally from that of continuously breeding aquarium species — the concept of incubating dry peat is unfamiliar to most freshwater hobbyists. Within the killifish hobby, however, it is considered a tractable and rewarding annual species, and its vivid blue-spotted male colouration makes it one of the more visually appealing members of the genus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Austrolebias litzi as Vulnerable (VU) in May 2022, under criteria B1ab(ii,iii). This category reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with ongoing decline in both the area of occupancy and the quality of the habitat. The species is confined to the upper rio Jacuí drainage and rio Vacacaí floodplains of Rio Grande do Sul — a geographically small range embedded in one of Brazil's most intensively farmed regions.
The primary threats mirror those facing annual killifishes across the Rio de la Plata basin and the Pampas: agricultural expansion and intensification have drained, channelled, and filled large areas of seasonal floodplain habitat across Rio Grande do Sul. Temporary pools are particularly vulnerable because they are not recognised as permanent water bodies requiring protection; they are drained for pasture improvement and row-crop cultivation without the same scrutiny applied to rivers and permanent lakes. Cattle grazing destroys the structure of pool margins and increases turbidity and nutrient loading. Introduced species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) — have established in many temporary water systems of southern South America and compete with or predate on the fry of native annual killies.
Given the species' reliance on a narrow, geographically bounded set of seasonal-pool habitats that are already under pressure, and given the ongoing trend of agricultural intensification in the region, the Vulnerable listing is a realistic assessment. Aquarium breeding populations maintained by killifish hobbyists internationally constitute a form of ex-situ conservation resource, though no coordinated programme specifically targeting this species is documented. Effective protection of remnant floodplain pools in the upper Jacuí catchment remains the most important conservation action for this and other endemic annual killifishes of Rio Grande do Sul.
