Austrolebias melanoorus is a small annual killifish native to the Pampas grasslands of central Uruguay and adjacent southern Brazil, where it lives out its entire life — often less than a year — in shallow, seasonal pools that vanish entirely each dry season. Like all members of the genus Austrolebias, the species is a true soil-spawner: pairs dive into the soft bottom to bury their eggs, which survive the drought in diapause and hatch when the rains return. Assessed Near Threatened by the IUCN in 2020, it faces mounting pressure from the ongoing drainage and conversion of the temporary wetlands that define its restricted range in the Pampa biome.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias melanoorus was described in 1986 by Juan Manuel Amato, making the authority (Amato, 1986). The valid combination is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), placing it in the genus Austrolebias within the family Rivulidae. The genus name is a compound of the Latin austro- (southern) and the Greek lebias (a small fish), coined to reflect both the southern-hemisphere distribution and the broader rivulid lineage — an etymology confirmed by FishBase.

The specific epithet melanoorus is Greek in origin: melano- (black) combined with oura (tail or fin), almost certainly referring to the dark fin markings that characterise males of this species. No subspecies are currently recognised, and the Catalog of Fishes lists no synonyms in common circulation.

Within Austrolebias, this species belongs to a radiation of annual killifishes distributed across the Pampas and Mesopotamian wetlands of Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil — a region characterised by seasonal flooding of low-lying grassland. The 2014 study by Lanés and colleagues documenting the first confirmed record from Brazil clarified the northern extent of the range and contributed habitat and conservation data that subsequently informed the IUCN assessment.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 2.5 in for males, typical for the mid-sized Austrolebias species of the Pampas. As in virtually all rivulids, sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males are more vividly coloured — the body carries dark, metallic patterning against a blue-green or bluish base, and the fins are marked with dark bands or marginal pigment that gives the epithet melanoorus its meaning. Females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown tones with less conspicuous markings, the typical drab pattern that provides camouflage while females incubate eggs in the substrate and await the next spawning dive.

The body form follows the broad Austrolebias pattern: relatively deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and a slightly upturned mouth angled for surface and mid-water prey capture. The scales are cycloid. Like other annual killies of the genus, the sexes diverge substantially in colour and fin shape at sexual maturity, a rapid development that accompanies the compressed life cycle.

Habitat

The type locality of Austrolebias melanoorus is the Bañados del Arroyo Tres Cruces, located at approximately km 339.5 on Ruta 5 in the Tacuarembó department of central Uruguay; it has also been recorded from the Cerro Largo department. The first records from Brazil, documented by Lanés et al. (2014), extend the range into the extreme south of the country, confirming a distribution centred on the Pampa biome of the upper Uruguay River drainage.

The species occupies shallow, temporary pools and seasonal bañados — low-lying wetland depressions in the grassland that fill with rainwater and remain inundated for part of the year before drying completely. These pools are typically turbid, with soft, fine-grained substrate of mud, peat, and accumulated organic detritus. Water temperatures in the region range from approximately 64–75 °F through the wet season, as reported by hobbyist accounts from It Rains Fishes, reflecting a cooler temperate climate compared with the Amazonian annual killies further north.

The Pampa biome that defines this species' habitat is poorly represented in protected areas, as documented by Lanés et al. (2014), leaving the temporary pools on which A. melanoorus depends largely outside formal conservation coverage.

Feeding

In its temporary pool habitat, Austrolebias melanoorus feeds primarily on small invertebrates, zooplankton, and aquatic insect larvae — the resources that bloom rapidly in newly filled seasonal pools. The upturned mouth is well suited to taking prey at or near the water surface and in the water column.

In captivity, hobbyist sources are consistent: the species prefers live and frozen foods and may initially refuse dry or prepared diets entirely. Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and small white worms (Enchytraeus) are reported as reliable staples by It Rains Fishes, reflecting the invertebrate-dominated diet of the wild fish. Small frozen bloodworm and artemia nauplii are also accepted. Conditioning breeders on a varied diet of live invertebrates noticeably improves reproductive output and colouration in males.

Mating

Austrolebias melanoorus is a classic annual killi in its reproductive strategy. Spawning occurs when seasonal pool water levels are adequate and temperatures are within the preferred range. Males compete actively for access to females, displaying lateral body markings and fin extensions. The vivid colouration of the male — particularly the dark fin markings referenced by the species name — is understood to function in both intraspecific male rivalry and female mate choice, as in other members of the genus.

Spawning dives are the defining act: a receptive female and the attending male position themselves side by side, then together plunge rapidly into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — burying the fertilised egg several centimetres deep before returning to the water column. Each dive deposits one or a small number of eggs. This behaviour is repeated many times across the spawning season. The pair typically spawn across several weeks while pool conditions remain suitable, maximising the number of diapausing eggs buried before desiccation.

Breeding

The eggs of Austrolebias melanoorus enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — immediately after deposition in the substrate. As pool water evaporates and the soil dries through the dry season, the buried eggs remain viable, encased in the hardened mud and peat layer of the pool bed. This drought tolerance is the key adaptation of annual killies and allows the species to persist through complete pool desiccation.

When rains return and the pool refills, the eggs hatch and the fry grow with extraordinary speed. FishBase notes a four-month incubation period at the temperature of the peat storage; in practice, hobbyist accounts (It Rains Fishes) report that at warmer incubation temperatures the hatching window can be shortened, and that young fish reach sexual maturity in approximately five to six weeks under good conditions. This compressed timeline from hatching to breeding maturity is necessary to complete at least one reproductive cycle before the pool dries again — sometimes the entire adult cohort perishes in the desiccation.

In the aquarium, the technique mirrors the biology: a peat moss or coco-peat substrate is provided in a spawning container, and after a spawning period the substrate is removed, partially dried, sealed in a bag, and stored at ambient temperature for a minimum of several weeks to months before being re-wetted over warm water to trigger hatching. Fry are tiny at hatching but grow rapidly on appropriately sized live foods such as baby brine shrimp and microworms.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias melanoorus is rated as difficult to maintain by FishBase, a characterisation that reflects the species' ecological specialisation rather than fragility. The fish is healthy and active when its needs are met, but it requires conditions that replicate the cooler, soft, seasonal pools of the Uruguayan Pampas — not the warm tropical parameters of the more commonly kept West African or Amazonian killies.

Hobbyist sources (It Rains Fishes) recommend water temperatures in the 64–75 °F range, cooler than most tropical aquarium fish, and a fine, soft substrate suitable for spawning dives. A species tank or pair/trio setup is standard: males are combative with one another, and a ratio of one male to two females helps distribute aggression. Tank size need not be large — a dedicated breeding pair can be housed in a modest container — but good water quality and appropriate cover are important. The short lifespan means aquarists who want to maintain the species must run an active breeding programme, cycling through stored peat and re-wetting hatches to produce the next generation before the current adults age out.

The species is not a beginner's fish, but it is rewarding for the killifish specialist. The American Killifish Association maintains a species page for A. melanoorus, and it circulates within the specialist killi network. It does not appear in the mainstream ornamental trade.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Austrolebias melanoorus as Near Threatened (NT) under criterion B1ab(iii), with the assessment dated 11 December 2020. The NT designation reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with ongoing decline in the quality and extent of its habitat — the shallow temporary pools of the Pampa biome — due to agricultural drainage, conversion of grassland to crop and pasture, and the general degradation of seasonal wetlands across the Uruguay River basin.

Lanés et al. (2014) documented that the Pampa biome is poorly represented within South American protected areas, leaving the temporary pool habitats on which annual killies depend largely without formal safeguards. The paper's confirmation of A. melanoorus in Brazil added modestly to the known range but did not substantially alter the conservation picture: the species remains confined to a narrow geographic footprint in the grasslands of central Uruguay and extreme southern Brazil, and any given local pool population may wink out if its basin is drained or the hydrology altered.

The American Killifish Association includes A. melanoorus among the species in its network, and specialist hobbyist cultivation — maintaining the peat-stored egg-bank equivalent — provides some ex-situ insurance for populations that may face increasing pressure in the wild. However, captive stocks are not a substitute for protecting the seasonal wetlands that define the Pampas killifish community.
