Juan Langer's killifish is a small annual rivulid from the rolling grasslands of southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where it inhabits shallow, seasonal pools no deeper than a bicycle wheel. It belongs to the large and biologically remarkable genus Austrolebias — the South American annual killifishes — whose lives are dictated by drought: the adult fish die when their ponds dry up each summer, but diapausing eggs buried in the mud await the rains and hatch a new generation months later. Assessed as Near Threatened on the 2024 IUCN Red List, Austrolebias juanlangi is threatened by agricultural conversion of its Pampas-edge wetlands, particularly the expansion of rice cultivation and associated drainage works in the Jaguarão River basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias juanlangi was described in 2006 by Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Marcelo Cheffe, Marcelo Salvia, and Marcos Litz. The type locality is in the Jaguarão River basin, in the municipalities of Herval, Hulha Negra, and Pedras Altas in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — a region of low-lying Pampas grassland straddling the Brazilian–Uruguayan border. The species was placed in Austrolebias, the genus that encompasses the great majority of South American annual killifishes and is the subject of ongoing taxonomic revision as molecular and morphological studies refine genus boundaries within the tribe Cynolebiatini (family Rivulidae).

Nomenclature for this species has undergone change. A recent treatment places the species in Matilebias, a genus erected to accommodate a subset of former Austrolebias species, and the American Killifish Association records the combination as Matilebias juanlangi following Bessonart, Brejão, and Loureiro (2024). FishBase continues to carry the original Austrolebias juanlangi combination. Until the Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) formally adopts the Matilebias placement, both combinations appear in the primary literature and the hobbyist press; the authority Costa, Cheffe, Salvia & Litz, 2006 remains fixed under either generic assignment.

The species epithet honours Juan Lang, an Uruguayan naturalist who contributed to the documentation of Rivulidae in the Río de la Plata basin.

Morphology

Austrolebias juanlangi is a small, sexually dichromatic annual killifish. Males reach approximately 1.5 in standard length; females are smaller, reaching about 1 in SL. This modest size is typical for the genus and reflects the evolutionary premium on rapid maturation in species whose adult life spans only a single wet season.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as it is across Austrolebias. Males display the vivid, often iridescent patterning characteristic of the genus — body colouration consisting of dark blue-green to blue-grey flanks overlaid with rows of pale metallic spots or reticulations, with dark margins on the unpaired fins. Females are cryptically coloured in drab grey-brown tones with fine mottling, an adaptation to avoid predator attention while the male is conspicuous in display. The body form in both sexes is robust and slightly compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and a blunt snout — a body plan suited to burrowing into soft substrate when spawning.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Jaguarão River basin in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, with records from the municipalities of Herval, Hulha Negra, and Pedras Altas. The Jaguarão drains the border region between Brazil and Uruguay before emptying into Lagoa Mirim, part of the Lagoa dos Patos system. The Volcan et al. (2011) field survey found the species in small temporary ponds typically smaller than 1,0 ft² in area, set in Pampas grassland — shallow depressions that fill with rain during the cooler, wetter months (austral winter and spring) and dry completely in summer.

Field measurements from those ponds record water temperatures of 58–66 °F (mean 61 °F) and a pH range of 6.1–7.1 (mean 6.6), with conductivity of 59.4–164.9 µS/cm and dissolved oxygen of 5.9–8.2 mg/L. Pond depth at sampling averaged 7.5 in. These are cool, mildly acidic to neutral, soft-to-moderately-hard waters — reflecting the temperate climate of the southern Brazilian highlands rather than the warm blackwater typically associated with tropical killies. The ponds lack emergent macrophytes suitable for plant-spawning; the soft mud and detritus bottom is the only substrate available for egg deposition.

Feeding

Like most members of the genus Austrolebias, this species is insectivorous in the wild, preying on small aquatic invertebrates — primarily larval and adult aquatic insects, microcrustaceans, and similar prey that colonise seasonal ponds rapidly after filling. In the confined, productive, temporary-pool environment, invertebrate abundance is high during the wet season, supporting the rapid growth and early maturation that annual species require.

In the aquarium the fish readily accepts frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and similar live or frozen invertebrate foods. Varied feeding accelerates growth and encourages full colour development in males; daily or twice-daily feeding of small portions suits the fast metabolism of an annual species with a compressed life schedule.

Mating

Courtship in Austrolebias juanlangi follows the pattern of annual killifish throughout the genus. Males are conspicuously coloured and actively display to females, erecting fins and circling in lateral and frontal threat and courtship postures. Competition between males is intense given the short season; dominant males guard positions in the pond and court females with persistent fin-spreading displays. Female choice is expressed through responsiveness to male colouration and fin condition.

Once a female is receptive, the pair align side by side and the male curves his body around her in a spawning embrace. Together they dive head-first into the soft substrate — the defining behaviour of annual peat-spawning killies — and deposit a clutch of eggs directly into the mud or detritus. The pair returns to the surface and the process is repeated at intervals. Eggs are buried several centimetres deep, insulated from the desiccation that will eventually kill the adults.

Breeding

The life history of Austrolebias juanlangi is governed by annual diapause. As the wet season advances, spawning continues until the pond begins to dry. The adults die — killed by desiccation or by the end of their natural lifespan, which in wild annual killies rarely exceeds a few months — but the eggs they have buried survive as drought-resistant, metabolically arrested embryos. Diapause may pass through several developmental stages (Diapause I, II, and III), allowing eggs to survive in dry mud for months and to time their hatching to re-flooding rather than merely to time elapsed.

In the aquarium the annual cycle is replicated with a peat or coir spawning medium placed on the tank floor. Breeders allow a pair or trio to spawn into the substrate for two to four weeks, then remove and gently dry the peat to store it in a sealed container. After a diapause period of three to six months the peat is re-wetted with aged, slightly acidic water and fry emerge within days. The aquarium for adults should be small — a 2.5–6.5 US gal tank suffices for a pair — and kept cool (around 68–72 °F) to match the species' temperate field range. The tank requires a secure lid, gentle filtration, and a substrate of soft peat or dark fine sand. Males are aggressive toward one another; the simplest approach is to keep one male with one or two females.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias juanlangi is a rewarding specialist killifish for hobbyists prepared to work with the annual peat-spawning cycle. Its modest footprint (a 2.5–6.5 US gal tank is sufficient), tolerance of typical room temperatures in temperate climates, and relative ease of inducing spawning make it an accessible entry point into annual killifish keeping. The striking sexual dichromatism — vivid metallic males alongside cryptic females — delivers genuine visual appeal despite the small size of the fish.

Care requirements align with the field data: temperature 64–72 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately hard water, subdued lighting, and a peat or coir substrate for spawning. Because the species comes from cool temperate ponds, it does not thrive at the tropical temperatures standard for most aquarium fish; summer overheating is a management concern in warm climates. Males are intolerant of one another and should not be kept together in small volumes. This is a species best maintained by killifish clubs and specialist hobbyists who can exchange eggs and share breeding notes; the American Killifish Association maintains records of Matilebias juanlangi in its species list.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Austrolebias juanlangi as Near Threatened (NT) in 2024, under criterion B1b(iii), indicating a restricted extent of occurrence with continuing decline in habitat quality. The assessment builds on earlier work — Volcan et al. (2011) documented the species from a handful of small temporary ponds in the Jaguarão River basin and identified rice cultivation and associated drainage as the primary threats. The conversion of Pampas grassland to irrigated rice paddies eliminates or degrades the seasonal depressions that the species depends on; drainage infrastructure lowers groundwater tables, shortening or eliminating the wet-season flooding that triggers hatching and reproduction.

Additional pressures identified in the 2024 IUCN assessment include housing development, non-timber crop agriculture, plantation forestry, dam construction, and water management schemes. The species has an inherently limited range — restricted to a single river basin in a border region under strong agricultural development pressure — and a life history that offers no buffer against habitat loss: there is no dispersal stage beyond the adult fish, and once a seasonal pond is drained or cultivated, the egg bank it contains is irretrievably lost. Targeted habitat protection of the temporary-pond complexes in the Jaguarão basin, alongside land-use controls on adjacent grassland, represents the most practical conservation measure available for this small but ecologically distinctive annual fish.
