Austrolebias minuano is a small annual killifish endemic to the coastal plains bordering the southern end of Laguna dos Patos in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. Like all members of its genus, it is an obligate annual: the adults spawn in soft substrate, rain-season pools dry completely between seasons, and the buried diapausing eggs carry the lineage through months of drought — hatching when the pools flood again. The species has since been reclassified into the genus Garcialebias by some authorities, though the name Austrolebias minuano remains in widespread use. Restricted to a single geographic area and entirely dependent on seasonal ephemeral pools that are rapidly disappearing under agricultural expansion, the species is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias minuano was formally described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Marcelo Cheffe in 2001, with the type locality recorded from ephemeral pools in the coastal plains near the southern margin of Laguna dos Patos, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The authority is written in parentheses, reflecting that the species has been moved from the original genus in which it was placed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the current valid combination as Austrolebias minuano (Costa & Cheffe, 2001).

A post-2020 taxonomic revision erected the genus Garcialebias to receive several Austrolebias species, and some databases — including the American Killifish Association — now list this species as Garcialebias minuano. However, the reclassification is not universally applied across catalogues, and the name Austrolebias minuano remains in common use in the hobby and much of the scientific literature. The situation illustrates the taxonomic flux that characterises the South American annual killifish radiation, where morphological and molecular phylogenies continue to reshape genus boundaries.

The specific epithet minuano refers to the Minuanos, an indigenous people of the Río de la Plata region and southern Brazil, evoking the geographic and cultural landscape of the species' native range. The name also echoes the minuano wind — a cold southerly gale characteristic of the pampa and coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul, the region where the fish was discovered.

Morphology

Austrolebias minuano is a sexually dimorphic species of modest size. FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 2 in in males and 1.5 in in females — typical of the smaller members of the genus. As in all Austrolebias, the body is deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin, a relatively large head, and a terminal, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.

Males are substantially more colourful than females, which is a consistent pattern across annual killifish. Males display an iridescent blue-green to turquoise body spangled with dark bars or spots, and the fins typically carry extensions and vivid markings used in territorial and courtship displays. Females are cryptically patterned in brown and tan, allowing them to remain inconspicuous in the soft sediment of their pool habitats. The pronounced sexual dichromatism reflects intense male-male competition in the compressed breeding season that characterises annual species — fish may have only weeks of adult life in which to reproduce before the pool dries.

Habitat

The species is restricted to ephemeral, seasonal pools in the moist subtropical coastal plain of southern Rio Grande do Sul, in close proximity to the southern end of Laguna dos Patos — the largest coastal lagoon system in South America. These pools form on low-lying ground when seasonal rains flood poorly drained pasture and scrubland; they persist for weeks to a few months, then dry completely in the dry season. The substrate is soft peat, mud, and organic detritus — the medium into which spawning pairs dive to deposit their eggs.

Field measurements from seasonal pools occupied by annual Austrolebias populations in this region (Reichard Lab research) record water temperatures reaching up to 93 °F during the warmer months, with a neutral pH of approximately 7. The pools are shallow, often turbid or tea-coloured with dissolved organic matter, and exposed to full sun. Annual killifish in this region have no access to permanent refuge habitats — the entire population exists only as buried eggs during the dry phase, making the integrity of the individual pool and its substrate the sole requirement for persistence.

Feeding

Austrolebias minuano feeds opportunistically on the small invertebrates that characterise the plankton-rich ephemeral pools of the coastal plain. Research on seasonal pool ecology (Reichard Lab) documents planktonic crustaceans — copepods, cladocerans — and chironomid (midge) larvae as the primary prey of annual killifish in this habitat. The upturned mouth and surface-oriented posture facilitate capture of organisms near the water surface and in the water column, and the fast growth rate of annual species places high demands on food intake during the brief adult phase.

In the aquarium, Austrolebias minuano accepts most small live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: artemia (brine shrimp), daphnia, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and tubifex. Small prepared foods are also taken once the fish is settled. Offering variety and high protein content helps maintain the rapid growth and vibrant male colouration that make these fish attractive to hobbyists.

Mating

Reproduction in Austrolebias minuano follows the annual killifish pattern in which the entire mating season is compressed into the short wet-season window before pools dry. Males establish and defend small territories within the pool and display intensely to females, using the iridescent flank colouration and extended fin displays to advertise condition. Competition among males is vigorous; in the confined space of an ephemeral pool, encounters are frequent.

Courtship involves the male positioning alongside the female and guiding her toward soft substrate at the pool floor. The spawning act is a brief, synchronised dive: the pair press together and burrow several centimetres into the mud or peat, releasing eggs and sperm simultaneously before surfacing. This substrate-diving behaviour is repeated many times over days and weeks, each dive producing one or a few fertilised eggs deposited and immediately covered by substrate. Males typically mate with multiple females, and females may receive sperm from multiple males, though precise mating system data for this species specifically are not available in the published literature.

Breeding

The eggs of Austrolebias minuano are the most durable phase of the life cycle. Buried in moist sediment, they enter diapause — a state of developmental arrest — and remain viable through months of complete pool desiccation. Field and laboratory studies on annual killifish (Reichard Lab) confirm that South American Austrolebias eggs undergo synchronised hatching shortly after their substrate is re-wetted following the dry season, with the entire cohort of a pool often hatching within a tight time window driven by rainfall cues.

Research on diapausing killifish eggs has also demonstrated a remarkable dispersal mechanism: viable eggs can pass through the digestive tracts of waterfowl (including swans) and survive gut passage of over 30 hours, hatching normally after excretion — a likely route by which annual killifish have colonised isolated pool systems across the coastal plain. In the hobby, annual Austrolebias are bred on a peat or coconut coir spawning substrate. After several weeks of spawning, the substrate is removed, lightly dried, and stored in a sealed bag for a dry period of two to four months before re-wetting to trigger hatching. Fry are large enough at hatching to accept baby brine shrimp immediately, and growth is rapid; fish can reach sexual maturity in six to eight weeks under warm conditions.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias minuano is a rewarding but specialist aquarium fish best suited to hobbyists familiar with annual killifish husbandry. A species tank is strongly preferred — males are territorial and will harass each other in confined spaces, and the males' predatory reflex makes small tankmates risky. A single pair or a small group (one male to two or three females) in a tank of 10–15 US gal is the standard approach. The tank should be tightly lidded, as killies are capable jumpers.

Water conditions should reflect the neutral, warm-to-cool subtropical environment of the home range: temperature around 68–75 °F is appropriate for long-term keeping (field pools can reach 93 °F briefly, but sustained high temperatures shorten the already short lifespan of annual species). pH near neutral (around 7) is suitable. A layer of peat or fine sand substrate is essential for spawning. Minimal water movement, subdued lighting, and floating or fine-leaved plants help reduce stress and bring males into display condition.

The annual life cycle means individuals live only months — often under a year even in captivity — and the hobbyist must work the peat substrate cycle to maintain a colony across generations. This ephemeral quality is part of the appeal for dedicated killi keepers: maintaining a population requires active management of the egg store and hatching schedule, connecting the keeper directly to the rhythms of the species' wild existence.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Austrolebias minuano as Near Threatened (NT), reflecting the combination of a restricted, single-area distribution and ongoing habitat loss. The species occurs only in the coastal plains near the southern margin of Laguna dos Patos in Rio Grande do Sul — a range so limited that any localised threat has population-level consequences. The primary pressure is agricultural drainage: the seasonal pools on which the species entirely depends are low-lying depressions that landowners routinely drain, fill, or disturb for pasture improvement and crop production.

Because Austrolebias minuano can persist only in pools that dry completely on an annual cycle — it cannot survive in permanent water and there is no terrestrial dispersal phase — it has no refuge from pool loss. The entire population exists as buried eggs for months each year, and if those eggs are destroyed by tillage or drainage during the dry season, local extinction follows immediately. The Wiley Aquatic Conservation review (2024) contextualises the species within the broader threat picture for South American annual killifish, noting that this group contains some of the most range-restricted and rapidly declining freshwater fishes in the neotropics.
