Austrolebias paucisquama is a diminutive South American annual killifish endemic to a single temporary pool in the rio Vacacaí drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Males reach just 1.5 in and are dressed in dark grey with vivid blue-iridescent pectoral fins; females are light brownish with dark spots. Like all South American annuals, the species lives out its entire life cycle before the seasonal pool evaporates, burying diapausing eggs deep in the soft substrate to wait out the dry winter — eggs that the following season's rains will eventually coax into a new generation. Assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN in 2018 on the basis of its tiny, single-locality range and the ongoing threat of drainage and agricultural conversion to its sole known habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias paucisquama was formally described in 2008 in Neotropical Ichthyology (vol. 6, no. 2, pp. 175–180) by Ferrer, Malabarba, and Costa, from specimens collected at a temporary pool in the rio Vacacaí drainage, a tributary of the rio Jacuí within the laguna dos Patos system in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the authority as Ferrer & Malabarba, 2011, and that form governs the valid name.

The species belongs to the genus Austrolebias, a diverse neotropical assemblage of annual killifishes historically classified within the family Rivulidae. The genus encompasses the great majority of South American annual killies and is characterised by the seasonal life-history strategy in which adults perish each dry season and the next generation overwinters as buried, diapausing eggs. Austrolebias paucisquama has at times been placed in or associated with the subgenus Matilebias — a grouping used by the American Killifish Association for hobbyist classification.

The specific epithet paucisquama derives from the Latin paucus (few) and squama (scale), referring to the relatively low scale count that distinguishes this species from close relatives. FishBase records a vertebral count of 28–30, consistent with the broader genus.

Morphology

Austrolebias paucisquama is a small, sexually dichromatic killifish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in in males and 1.5 in in females — unusually, females reach a marginally greater length than males in this species, though the difference is slight. The body form is robust and laterally compressed, typical of the genus.

Males are strikingly coloured: the ground colour is dark grey to nearly black, and the pectoral fins carry bright blue iridescence. As in many Austrolebias, the iridescent patterning extends onto the flanks and unpaired fins in fully mature males, making them visually conspicuous when in spawning condition. Females are cryptically coloured — light brownish with dark spots — a pattern common to female Austrolebias that provides camouflage against the leaf-litter and detritus substrate of their seasonal pools.

The combination of relatively few scales (the basis of the epithet paucisquama), a dark male body with iridescent blue pectoral fins, and a brownish, spotted female separates this species from its congeners in the rio Jacuí system.

Habitat

Austrolebias paucisquama is known from a single type locality: a temporary pool in the rio Vacacaí drainage, itself a tributary of the rio Jacuí, within the greater laguna dos Patos basin of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The American Killifish Association documents two named collection localities, both within this same rio Vacacaí / rio Jacuí system. This makes A. paucisquama one of the most range-restricted killifishes in South America.

The habitat is a seasonal pool that fills with the subtropical winter rains and desiccates completely in the summer dry season. FishBase records the pool as almost completely covered with emergent vegetation, creating densely vegetated, shallow, dimly lit conditions. The substrate is the fine organic mud and detritus into which the fish spawn — a soft, peaty layer that retains buried eggs through the dry months. Water temperatures in Rio Grande do Sul's seasonal pools track the subtropical climate, cooling markedly in winter (austral June–August) and warming through spring and summer.

Because the species is known from such a restricted area, its precise water-chemistry parameters are not fully documented in the available literature; conditions in the laguna dos Patos catchment are generally soft and somewhat acidic, reflecting the sandy, heavily leached soils of the Pampas and Atlantic Forest margins.

Feeding

Like most South American annual killifishes, Austrolebias paucisquama is a carnivore, relying on the invertebrate productivity of its temporary pool to build body condition rapidly in the brief wet season. In temporary Pampas pools, food sources include aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, mosquito larvae), microcrustaceans (ostracods, copepods, cladocerans), small worms, and other zooplankton that bloom as the pool fills and warms. The ambush-predator body plan common to Austrolebias — a broad mouth set toward the end of a slightly upturned snout — is well adapted to capturing mobile prey items at or near the surface and in the water column.

In the aquarium, A. paucisquama readily takes live foods such as Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and small worms. Frozen equivalents (bloodworm, brine shrimp, cyclops) are also accepted. A varied diet of meaty foods maintains condition and promotes reproductive activity. Dry or pelleted foods may be accepted by some individuals but should not form the staple; killies of this type thrive on a predominantly live or frozen diet.

Mating

Courtship in Austrolebias paucisquama follows the pattern typical of the genus: the male pursues the female actively, displaying his iridescent pectoral fins and dark body colouration to signal fitness. When the female is receptive, the pair adopts a side-by-side orientation and manoeuvres toward the spawning substrate. Males can be persistent and occasionally aggressive in pursuit; providing visual breaks in the aquarium and ensuring that females are well-conditioned before introducing males reduces stress-related injuries.

As described in South American killi breeding literature, Austrolebias is a 'deep diver' in the spawning sense: unlike the African Nothobranchius, which ploughs shallowly into the surface of the substrate, an Austrolebias pair submerges completely into the soft mud or peat, burying themselves and releasing eggs and sperm well below the surface. This deep burial places the eggs beyond the reach of surface desiccation cracks during the early dry season and provides the thermal buffering needed for successful diapause.

Breeding

Spawning occurs repeatedly over the wet season as long as the pool persists and the fish remain in condition. Each spawning dive buries one or a few eggs deep in the substrate; over the course of weeks, a single pair can deposit dozens of eggs across the spawning bed. When the pool evaporates — typically in the austral summer — the adults die, and the buried eggs enter diapause, a state of arrested development in which embryos can tolerate complete desiccation for months. Hatching is triggered by re-wetting when the next season's rains refill the pool, whereupon the new cohort matures rapidly, spawns, and dies before the following dry season. The entire life cycle from egg to spawning adult commonly completes in four to six months or less.

In the hobby, keepers simulate this cycle on a peat or coconut-coir spawning medium of sufficient depth (several centimetres) to allow true deep dives. After a spawning period of four to eight weeks, the medium is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, bagged in a labelled plastic bag, and stored at room temperature for a minimum of eight to twelve weeks — longer storage often improves hatch rates and ensures the eggs have fully completed diapause. Wetting the bag with aged soft water triggers hatching, usually within one to three days. Fry are large enough at hatching to take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately, and they grow rapidly.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias paucisquama is a specialist's fish — compact, brilliantly coloured in the male, and biologically fascinating, but demanding in its husbandry requirements and not a community tank species. A pair or trio (one male, two females) can be housed in a small aquarium of 10 US gal, provided the tank is dedicated to the species or at most to one other small, non-competitive killi. The tank should be heavily planted or furnished with leaf litter to give females refuge from male pursuit, and it must have a lid to prevent jumping — annual killies are active and will find any gap.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, cool by tropical standards: conditions in the laguna dos Patos basin suggest temperatures in the range of 61–72 °F during the growing season, dropping lower in winter. Overly warm conditions shorten the already brief natural lifespan and reduce egg viability. A spawning medium of fine, moist peat or coconut coir, several centimetres deep, must be provided at all times so the pair can dive-spawn naturally; without it the fish are denied their instinctive reproductive behaviour.

A. paucisquama is not a species for the general hobbyist but rewards dedicated killi keepers with colour, behaviour, and the remarkable spectacle of the annual life cycle compressed into a few months. The AKA classifies it as Class 3 (South American Annuals) and has documented it in the Journal of the American Killifish Association.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Austrolebias paucisquama as Vulnerable (VU) in November 2018 under criterion D2, which flags species with a very restricted area of occupancy such that they could be critically endangered or extinct within a short period from plausible future threats. The assessment, conducted by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), records the species as known only from its type locality — a single temporary pool in the rio Vacacaí drainage of Rio Grande do Sul — with habitat loss through pool drainage and agricultural conversion in southern Brazil identified as the key threats.

Rio Grande do Sul is one of Brazil's most intensively farmed states: the Pampas and Atlantic Forest-edge landscapes that harbour seasonal killi pools have been heavily converted to soy, rice, and pasture production over the past half-century. Temporary pools are routinely drained, filled, or subjected to agrochemical runoff. For a species known from a single locality, any one of these interventions could constitute effective extinction. The fact that the AKA documents only two named collection localities underscores how little distributional buffer exists.

Hobbyist breeding programmes have an established role in sustaining populations of threatened annual killies: eggs are stable and easily exchanged, the life cycle is rapid, and dedicated killi societies such as the AKA and their affiliated clubs maintain and distribute live strains of rare species. For A. paucisquama, continued hobby maintenance is one of the most practical short-term conservation contributions available while in-situ protection of its remaining habitat in the rio Vacacaí system is pursued.
