Austrolebias toba is a Critically Endangered annual killifish endemic to the lower Río Bermejo basin in the Gran Chaco of northern Argentina, a landscape of seasonally flooded grasslands and scrub forest where isolated rain-fed pools are the only standing water for months at a time. Like every member of its genus, A. toba has evolved the defining trick of South American annual killifishes: the adults die when their pool evaporates at the end of the wet season, leaving behind buried, drought-resistant eggs in the substrate to carry the lineage through the dry months in arrested development — hatching only when rain refills the pool in the following season. A small fish reaching roughly 2 in standard length, it was described in 2015 and is one of a cluster of Austrolebias species from the Chaco and Pampas regions currently under pressure from wetland drainage and agricultural expansion.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias toba was described by Thomaz, Carvalho, Alves & Camelier in 2015, with the type locality in the lower Río Bermejo drainage, Chaco Province, Argentina. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Austrolebias toba (Thomaz, Carvalho, Alves & Camelier, 2015); the authority appears in parentheses following standard nomenclatural convention when the genus has changed since first description. The species has also appeared in the killifish literature under the combination Matilebias toba — the American Killifish Association database references it under that name, and the 2022 IUCN Red List assessment by F. Alonso cites the species as Matilebias toba — reflecting ongoing taxonomic debate within Austrolebias and allied genera about the boundaries of the group.

Austrolebias is the largest and most speciose genus of South American annual killifishes, comprising dozens of species distributed across the Río de la Plata basin, the Pampas, and the Chaco region of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Within the genus, A. toba belongs to a cluster of Chaco-region species that tolerate the pronounced seasonal aridity of that biome. The specific epithet toba refers to the Qom people (historically called the Toba), an indigenous group of the Gran Chaco region where the species was collected.

Morphology

Austrolebias toba is a small, compact killifish reaching approximately 2 in standard length (It Rains Fishes; Fishipedia gives 1.5–2 in). Like its close relatives in Austrolebias, it is laterally compressed with a deep body profile, an upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding, and large scales. Breeding males are typically more intensely coloured than females, displaying the vivid patterning characteristic of Austrolebias — dark body with iridescent blue-green or turquoise flanks marked with contrasting dark bars or spots, with brightly edged unpaired fins. Females and juveniles are more cryptic, showing a brownish or olive-tan ground colour with irregular darker mottling that provides camouflage against the leaf-litter and detritus of their shallow pool habitat.

The relatively small adult size of A. toba (under 2 in SL) is consistent with the fast life history typical of annual killifishes: compressed growth, early sexual maturity, and investment in reproduction over survival, all adaptations to a habitat that disappears on a predictable annual schedule. Detailed morphometric data specific to this species are not yet widely published in accessible hobby literature, but the general Austrolebias body plan — stocky, deep-bodied, with a large head and robust jaws — is consistent with the feeding habits of a generalist predator in temporary pools.

Habitat

The species is known from the lower Río Bermejo basin in northern Argentina, a drainage system that flows through the Gran Chaco — one of South America's largest seasonally dry tropical forests and scrublands, characterised by marked wet and dry seasons, flat topography, and shallow ephemeral water bodies. The pools A. toba inhabits form during the rainy season and dry out completely during the dry season, sometimes within a matter of weeks.

Water conditions in Chaco seasonal pools are variable but tend toward warm, shallow, soft to moderately hard water. It Rains Fishes records a temperature range of 64–75 °F as suitable for the species; Fishipedia records pH around 5.5 and very low hardness (1–5 dH), while Seriously Fish notes pH around 6.5 and hardness around 5 dH. These slightly acid to neutral, soft-water conditions reflect the chemistry of rain-fed pools on the alluvial Chaco plain, which accumulate little dissolved mineral load. Pools are typically shallow — often only tens of centimetres deep — with substrates of fine mud, decomposing leaf litter, and organic detritus: exactly the material into which annual killifishes deposit their eggs.

Feeding

Austrolebias toba is a carnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and similar prey — from the water column and surface of its shallow seasonal pools. The upturned mouth position is an adaptation for intercepting prey at or near the surface, and the large eyes facilitate prey detection in the turbid, often tea-stained or green-tinged water of temporary pools. Fishipedia characterises the diet as carnivorous; the genus as a whole takes a wide range of small live invertebrate prey in nature.

In captivity, A. toba and its close relatives accept a variety of small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), Artemia nauplii, and similar invertebrate foods form an appropriate diet. Dry foods may be accepted but should not constitute the majority of the ration for this active, carnivorous species. Feeding frequency should be moderate; annual killifishes in temporary pools experience periods of feast and famine in the wild and do not require continuous heavy feeding.

Mating

Austrolebias toba follows the classical annual killifish mating pattern: males display intensely to females using their vivid colouration, and rival males engage in lateral displays and occasional direct confrontations to establish dominance and access to spawning sites. Breeding males of Austrolebias species are among the most ornately patterned of all South American freshwater fishes, and intraspecific mate competition appears to drive the strong sexual dichromatism seen across the genus.

Spawning is substrate-directed: the male positions himself alongside or below the female, and together they dive headfirst into the soft mud or peat substrate at the bottom of the pool in a rapid spawning plunge. A single egg is deposited deep in the substrate with each dive. Multiple spawning dives occur during a breeding session, with pairs returning to the surface between dives. This diving behaviour is the defining trait of the group and is what allows the eggs to be buried deeply enough to survive pool desiccation; eggs deposited on or near the surface would be exposed to lethal drying as the water recedes.

Breeding

The eggs of Austrolebias toba are deposited in the substrate and then abandoned. As the pool dries out at the end of the wet season, the eggs enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development in which metabolic activity drops dramatically, allowing the embryo to survive months of heat and desiccation inside the moist mud substrate. Development resumes when rain refills the pool, and hatching follows within days to weeks of re-wetting. The adult fish die as the pool dries; the eggs are the sole vehicle of survival across the dry season.

In the aquarium, the annual mode is maintained on a peat or coir (coconut fibre) spawning medium placed at the tank bottom. Pairs are given access to the medium and checked every few weeks; the medium is then removed, gently squeezed to remove excess water (but not fully dried), sealed in a labelled bag, and stored at room temperature (around 72–75 °F) for a period of 6–12 weeks — It Rains Fishes notes typical incubation of around 6 weeks at 77 °F, with longer periods at cooler temperatures. At the end of the storage period the medium is re-wetted with soft, slightly acid water, and fry hatch within hours to days. Fry are relatively large by killifish standards and accept Artemia nauplii and micro-worms as first foods. Water temperatures of 64–75 °F suit the species; higher temperatures accelerate senescence in these short-lived fish.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias toba is kept by specialist annual killifish hobbyists rather than the general aquarium trade. It requires a setup that accommodates its annual biology: a tank of modest size (a standard 10–15 US gal aquarium is sufficient for a pair or trio), a deep layer of peat or coir substrate for spawning, cool to moderate temperatures (64–75 °F), soft and slightly acid to neutral water (pH 5.5–6.5, hardness under 5 dH), and subdued lighting. Dark substrate and floating plants help the fish feel secure and enhance colouration in males.

Because these are short-lived fish — wild adults typically live only a single wet season, perhaps 6–9 months — aquarists working with A. toba must maintain a cycling programme of egg storage and re-wetting to sustain their stock across generations. A colony approach is preferable to a single pair: keeping multiple breeders and harvesting eggs regularly ensures genetic diversity is maintained in captivity, which is important for a species that is critically threatened in the wild. The species is not widely available commercially; it is primarily circulated within specialist killifish societies and associations such as the American Killifish Association.

A. toba should not be mixed with larger or more aggressive species; within-species male aggression can be managed by providing visual barriers and, if space allows, keeping multiple females per male to disperse spawning activity. Tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceful, and adapted to cool soft water.

Conservation

Austrolebias toba is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (F. Alonso, 2022 assessment, version 2025-2). The Critically Endangered status reflects the species' extreme range restriction — it is known from the lower Río Bermejo basin in northern Argentina — combined with ongoing and accelerating threats to seasonal wetland habitats in the Gran Chaco. Agricultural expansion in the Chaco has been among the most rapid in South America over recent decades, with large-scale soy and cattle production driving the drainage and conversion of the seasonal pool systems that A. toba depends on. These pools, which may appear agriculturally worthless during the dry season, are irreplaceable breeding habitat for a species with no ability to disperse once its home pool is eliminated.

Additional threats common to Chaco seasonal pool killifishes include the introduction of Gambusia and other mosquitofish — aggressive, live-bearing exotic species that out-compete and prey on annual killifish fry — as part of mosquito-control programmes, as well as general degradation of water quality from agricultural run-off. The species' narrow range, combined with the habitat specificity of annual killifishes (each population is effectively locked into its local pool system), means that local extinction events are irreversible on any human timescale. Captive maintenance by specialist hobbyists through killifish societies is a meaningful conservation measure for such species, preserving genetic material that cannot be recovered once lost from the wild.
