Taxonomy & naming
Fundulopanchax walkeri was described by the Belgian-born British zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911, making it one of the earlier West African killifishes to receive a formal name from European museum material. The type locality is Bokitsa Mine, near Wasa in southwestern Ghana. The species was originally placed in Aphyosemion, the broad catch-all genus then used for most African egg-laying killifishes, and the parentheses around the authority in the current combination reflect that move. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Fundulopanchax walkeri (Boulenger, 1911).
The species carries a cluttered synonymy accumulated during the first half of the twentieth century, when killifish taxonomy was loosely applied and colour-form variants were frequently elevated to species rank: Aphyosemion spurelli, Aphyosemion litoriseboris, Aphyosemion rubrofasciatus, and Aphyosemion sjoestedti have all been placed in synonymy with walkeri. Within Fundulopanchax it is assigned to the subgenus Paraphyosemion, a grouping of smaller-bodied, more mesic West African species that bridges the robustly built gardneri group and the slender coastal lowland lineages.
The species shows conspicuous inter-population variation in colour patterning across its range. Killifish hobbyists and the American Killifish Association (AKA) document numerous distinct collection populations — Abidjan, Agboville, Akwatia, Kumasi (coded GH1/74), Kutunse (GH2/74), Eri Makouguié, Grand Yapo, and Lamto, among others — each with subtly different male coloration. These populations are maintained as discrete strains in the hobby to preserve their genetic integrity.
Morphology
Walker's killifish is a moderately sized Fundulopanchax reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length; FishBase records 2.5 in SL and Seriously Fish gives a maximum of 2.5 in SL. The body plan is typical of the genus: laterally compressed, with a rounded dorsal profile, a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and midwater prey capture, and an elaborate, fin-equipped posterior section in males. Meristic counts from FishBase are D 14–16, A 15–17, lateral-line scales 29–32.
Males are substantially more colourful than females and develop extended, flag-like rays on the dorsal and anal fins at maturity. Base body colour ranges from dull red to olive dorsally, shading to paler flanks covered in iridescent blue-green scales arranged in a pattern of oblique or horizontal rows that intensifies under raking light. The median fins carry red-and-blue banding or spotting, and the caudal fin can be lyrate in fully adult males of some populations. Females are plain olive to pinkish-buff with a rounded, shorter caudal fin and none of the fin extensions — a degree of dimorphism typical of the genus.
Habitat
Fundulopanchax walkeri occupies coastal humid rainforest and forested savanna in a relatively compact West African range: the Bia, Tano, Ankobra, and Oda river systems in southwestern Ghana, and the Bandama, Comoé, and Bia systems in central to eastern Ivory Coast — the species does not occur east of the Dahomey Gap and is the sole Fundulopanchax representative in this floristically distinct corridor west of it.
Within those basins it inhabits small streams, forest pools, swampy ground, and the shallow margins of larger watercourses where overhanging vegetation creates dappled, tannin-stained conditions. The water is characteristically soft and slightly acidic; the AKA Killi Library documents typical conditions of 73–77 °F, and Seriously Fish records an aquarium range of 68–73 °F (68–73 °F), pH 6.0–7.0, and hardness around 5–12 °dH. Leaf litter and submerged roots provide refuge and hunting grounds. Some collection sites are strictly perennial, fed by groundwater; others dry partially in the dry season, exposing pockets of damp peat and compressed organic substrate — an ecological variability reflected in the species' semi-annual reproductive strategy.
Feeding
Walker's killifish is a small carnivore that forages in the water column and at the surface for invertebrate prey. In the wild it takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and fallen terrestrial insects — the surface-tilted mouth points to a preference for prey at or just below the film. Its size means it is capable of taking prey up to a few millimetres in length without difficulty.
In captivity the species feeds readily on live and frozen small invertebrates: daphnia, cyclops, mosquito larvae, and bloodworm are all accepted with enthusiasm and support best colour and condition. Commercially prepared small pellets and flake are taken by many individuals once acclimatised, but the diet should lean heavily toward meaty invertebrate foods. Variety — alternating live, frozen, and dry foods — appears to support immune condition, which is relevant for a species that can be sensitive to water-quality fluctuations.
Mating
The mating system of Walker's killifish is typical of Fundulopanchax: males are brightly coloured, polygynous, and compete intensely for access to females through lateral displays in which the fully spread median fins and body colouration are presented at close range. Rival males engage in repeated flaring bouts and occasional nipping but rarely cause serious injury if kept in appropriate conditions with adequate sight-line breaks. A dominant male in peak condition is a striking fish; the interplay of iridescent blue-green and red-brown scales under display lighting rewards attentive observation.
The AKA Killi Library notes that males can be hard drivers of females — persistent and relentless in spawning pursuits — so in a confined aquarium it is standard practice to provide multiple females per male, heavy planting or yarn mop cover, and periodic rotation of fish to give spent females recovery time. Eggs are deposited into fine substrate or vegetation during spawning embrace; females release a few eggs per session over the course of days rather than in a single mass release, making the species a continuous rather than batch spawner during the breeding season.
Breeding
Walker's killifish is a semi-annual killifish rather than a strict annual. In practice this means the eggs tolerate both water incubation (like a non-annual plant-spawner) and extended damp-peat incubation (like a short-diapause annual), a flexibility that reflects the mixed habitat — some populations come from permanently wet forest streams, others from sites that partially dry. facts.breeding.mode is therefore best described as semi-annual: eggs can be raised to hatching in water at room temperature or stored damp in peat for several weeks before re-wetting.
For water incubation the AKA documents hatching in approximately 21 days at around 70 °F (70 °F); for damp incubation the range given is five to six weeks in dry storage or up to eight to twelve weeks in peaty water. Daily egg production per pair is modest — typically 10–30 eggs — but consistent over weeks. Egg diameter is 0.5 in. Fry are free-swimming from hatching and immediately accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii; they grow quickly, reaching sexual maturity in two to three months and a length approaching 3 in in under six months under good conditions. Adults are reported to live two to three years in captivity, longer than strict annual species.
In the aquarium
Walker's killifish is considered one of the more accessible entry points into West African killifish keeping. It is less demanding about water chemistry extremes than some of its genus relatives, adapts to a range of soft, slightly acidic water, and tolerates temperatures on the cooler side of what tropical aquaria typically provide — the 68–73 °F range cited by Seriously Fish is achievable in most temperate-climate fishrooms without supplemental heating in summer, and is preferable to keeping the species in the mid- to high-twenties that suit many other tropicals; elevated temperatures are reported to shorten lifespan noticeably.
The AKA recommends pairs or trios (one male, two females) in small, well-planted or mop-equipped tanks of 10–15 US gal with gentle filtration and a dark substrate. Peat filtration or dried leaf litter maintains the slight acidity and tannin staining that mirrors natural conditions and brightens male colouration. The tank must be tightly covered — killifishes are accomplished jumpers. Walker's killifish can be kept as a species focus or alongside small, peaceful dither fish of similar water requirements, but tankmates must be too large to be eaten and not large enough to bully the fish.
Multiple collection-locality strains of F. walkeri circulate in specialist killifish clubs and through the AKA and British Killifish Association. Hobbyists maintaining multiple strains are encouraged to keep them separate and label offspring by strain code to preserve the diversity accumulated by decades of field collectors.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax walkeri as Least Concern in 2019 (assessment 130435a2, IUCN version 2025-2), reflecting a distribution that, while restricted to southwestern Ghana and the southern half of Ivory Coast, spans multiple river basins and encompasses a range of habitat types. The species is not currently considered to be declining at a rate that would qualify it for a threatened category.
That said, Walker's killifish is tied to the forest-stream and swampy-hollow habitats of the West African coastal rainforest and forested savanna — a biome under sustained pressure from agricultural conversion, logging, and the expansion of oil palm and cocoa cultivation across Ghana and Ivory Coast. Several collection localities documented in the hobbyist literature are in peri-urban or agricultural landscapes where small watercourses are vulnerable to channelisation, abstraction, and siltation. The species' dependence on soft, acidic, shaded forest water means it is poorly equipped to persist in degraded, sunlit, or alkaline watercourses. Its narrow restriction west of the Dahomey Gap also means it has no refuge populations elsewhere in the continent should the southern Ghanaian and Ivorian forest corridor continue to shrink. Ongoing monitoring of known collection sites and continued maintenance of the species in hobbyist fishrooms — as genetically distinct, locality-coded strains — represent meaningful contributions to its long-term security.
