Taxonomy & naming
Hypsolebias igneus was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2004. The authority is presented in parentheses because the generic placement has shifted since the original description: the species was first placed in a broader circumscription of Simpsonichthys before being transferred to the resurrected genus Hypsolebias, which Costa and others now apply to a clade of high-bodied annual killifishes endemic to the seasonally dry upland savannas and Caatinga scrub of central and northeastern Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Hypsolebias igneus (Costa, 2004).
The genus Hypsolebias encompasses approximately 55 species, all confined to temporary pool systems draining into the major river basins of the Brazilian interior — the São Francisco, the Paraíba do Norte, the Jequitinhonha, and their tributaries. The species belongs to what killifish systematists informally call the Hypsolebias flavicaudatus group, a cluster of closely related taxa with overlapping ranges in the São Francisco headwater region. Boundaries within this group remain an active subject of morphological and molecular revision.
The specific epithet igneus is Latin for 'fiery' or 'of fire', an unmistakable reference to the vivid, flame-red and orange colouration of the flanks of sexually active males — among the most intense pigmentation seen in the genus.
Morphology
Hypsolebias igneus is a compact, deep-bodied killifish reaching approximately 2–2.5 in standard length, with FishBase recording a maximum of 2 in SL and field notes from ItRainsFishes citing individuals up to 2.5 in SL. The body is laterally compressed and distinctly high-backed relative to many other annual killifishes, a profile characteristic of the genus name Hypsolebias ('high' + lebias, a traditional killifish suffix).
Males are dramatically coloured, displaying the fiery red and orange flanks that give the species its epithet, overlaid with a pattern of iridescent scales that appear blue or turquoise under direct light, and often a contrasting dark margin on the unpaired fins. The dorsal and anal fins of males are enlarged and pointed, the caudal fin rounded. Females are cryptically patterned in olive-brown or greyish-tan with faint barring, lacking the intense red pigmentation of males entirely — a degree of sexual dichromatism typical of the genus and characteristic of annual killies in which male colour displays play an important role in mate selection during the brief adult life.
Sexual dimorphism is otherwise straightforward: females are smaller, deeper-bellied when gravid, and duller in colouration at all times. Both sexes carry the minute, upturned mouth suited to feeding at or near the water surface in shallow ephemeral pools.
Habitat
The species is known from a very restricted range centred on temporary pools approximately 14 mi north of the village of Igarité, in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia state, northeastern Brazil, at approximately 11°28′S, 43°17′W, at an elevation of 1421 ft. All known localities drain into the Rio São Francisco basin. The broader São Francisco watershed is one of the most important drainage systems in eastern South America, but the specific pools occupied by H. igneus are shallow, isolated, and ephemeral — they fill during the austral wet season (roughly October through April in the Caatinga) and dry out completely during the dry season, leaving no permanent surface water.
The surrounding landscape is Caatinga, the seasonally dry tropical forest and thorn-scrub biome unique to northeastern Brazil and classified as a global biodiversity hotspot. Pool substrates are typically soft mud and fine organic detritus, including decomposing leaf litter and root material — the medium into which the eggs are deposited. Water temperatures in these exposed, shallow pools fluctuate considerably over the day and season; ItRainsFishes records a range of 70–84 °F across the active season. Specific pH and hardness data for the type-locality pools are not available in the published literature, but Caatinga pool chemistry is variable and tends toward soft, moderately acidic conditions during the rainy season when dilute rainwater fills the pools.
The species is most likely a single-locality or very few-locality endemic, placing it among the most geographically restricted vertebrates in South America.
Feeding
Like all members of the genus, Hypsolebias igneus is carnivorous, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and other zooplankton-sized prey — from the water column and surface of its ephemeral pool habitat. The upturned mouth is well suited to feeding at the air–water interface, where terrestrial insects fall onto the surface and emerging aquatic insects are abundant during the wet season.
In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily. ItRainsFishes records that fry can be started on freshly hatched Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii or Paramecium cultures, graduating to larger live foods as the fish grow. Adult fish take frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small live invertebrates. As with most annual killies, condition and colour intensity in males improve markedly when live foods are provided regularly. The fast-paced annual life cycle means that growth to sexual maturity must be rapid, and a high-protein diet from the earliest stages is essential for producing healthy breeding adults.
Mating
Hypsolebias igneus is an annual killifish with substrate-spawning reproductive behaviour in which both the environment and the male's colouration drive the mating dynamic. During the brief wet season, males display intensely to females, using their brilliant red-orange flanks and extended, pointed dorsal and anal fins in lateral displays and fin-fanning bouts. Competition between males over females is presumably intense given the extremely short adult lifespan — in seasonal pools that persist for weeks to a few months, every reproductive opportunity matters.
Courting males pursue females persistently, and spawning is initiated when the female accepts a male's approach. The pair swim side by side, the male pressing alongside the female, and together they make short vertical dives into the soft substrate — mud or leaf detritus — burying themselves briefly and depositing one or a few eggs with each dive. This diving behavior is the hallmark of annual soil-spawning killifishes and is driven by the evolutionary need to place eggs below the surface, where they are protected from the desiccation that will kill every adult when the pool dries.
Breeding
Eggs of Hypsolebias igneus are fertilised in the substrate during each spawning dive and are left entirely without parental care. The eggs are highly resistant to desiccation: once the pool evaporates, the eggs enter diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development in which metabolic activity drops to near zero — and remain viable in the dry substrate for the duration of the dry season, which can last several months. When seasonal rains refill the pool, the eggs receive the signal to resume development and hatch within days to weeks, depending on the depth of diapause and the temperature of the water.
In the aquarium, this breeding mode is replicated using a peat moss or coir fibre spawning medium placed on the tank bottom. After a spawning period of several weeks, the medium — containing the buried eggs — is removed, slightly dried to a just-moist consistency, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at a stable temperature for a diapause period of 8–16 weeks (exact duration varies by strain and egg batch). At the end of storage the medium is re-wetted with aged water, and fry typically begin hatching within hours to a few days. This incubation technique is standard across the annual killifish hobby and is the method by which hobbyists worldwide keep and distribute Hypsolebias species.
First foods for newly hatched fry are freshly hatched Artemia nauplii or Paramecium cultures, as noted by ItRainsFishes. Growth is rapid — annual species are programmed for fast maturation — and young fish can reach sexual maturity in as little as six to eight weeks under warm, well-fed conditions. Wild fish almost certainly complete their entire above-ground life cycle — from hatch to spawning to death — within the span of a single wet season.
In the aquarium
Hypsolebias igneus is a specialist hobbyist fish, not a mainstream community aquarium species. Its care requirements are straightforward once the annual killifish approach to maintenance is understood, but the need to manage diapausing eggs through dry-storage and re-wetting cycles places it outside the routine of most general fishkeepers. Within the killifish hobby, species of Hypsolebias are sought after for the exceptional colouration of the males, and H. igneus — with its fiery red flanks — is among the more visually striking members of the genus.
The aquarium should be small to medium in size, with a soft, fine substrate or a dedicated peat spawning layer. A tight-fitting lid is necessary, as killies are accomplished jumpers. Water temperature of 70–84 °F covers the recorded natural range; the aquarium should be maintained on the cooler end of this range for long-term adult health. Water chemistry should replicate the soft, moderately acidic conditions of Caatinga seasonal pools where possible, though precise pH data for the type locality are not available in the literature. Males are best kept one per tank or in a heavily decorated tank with visual barriers, as male–male aggression is common and space to retreat is essential for subordinate fish.
The species is unlikely to be available through general retail channels; acquisition is typically through specialist killifish societies — such as the American Killifish Association (AKA) or national equivalents — that maintain and distribute egg packs of rare annual species through member exchanges. Given the Endangered status and extreme natural range restriction, captive populations maintained by specialist hobbyists represent meaningful ex-situ conservation value.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hypsolebias igneus as Endangered (EN) in 2022, a classification consistent with its extreme geographic restriction to a tiny cluster of temporary pools in the Caatinga of Bahia state, Brazil. The São Francisco basin is one of the most economically developed drainages in Brazil, subject to large-scale water diversion (notably the São Francisco River Integration Project, which transfers water to the semi-arid northeast), widespread deforestation, and agricultural conversion that destroys and fragments the seasonal pool habitats on which annual killifishes depend.
The threats to H. igneus are those common to Caatinga annual killies: drainage of temporary pools for livestock watering and small-scale agriculture; compaction and degradation of the soft-substrate pool margins where eggs are buried; introduction of exotic species such as Gambusia (mosquitofish) that prey on fry and compete for invertebrate food; and the broader desertification trend in the semi-arid northeast driven by climate change and land degradation. Because the species appears to occupy a very small number of localities, possibly a single cluster near Igarité, any local disturbance carries a high risk of regional or total extinction.
No formal conservation measures are known to be in place specifically for H. igneus, and the species receives no protection from the handful of protected areas in the Chapada Diamantina region unless those areas encompass its exact pool localities. The captive population maintained by killifish enthusiasts, while small and genetically unmonitored, represents the only documented ex-situ reservoir for the species.
