Austrolebias nachtigalli is a small South American annual killifish endemic to Brazil, living out its entire existence in the seasonal pools and temporary wetlands that define the Rivulidae life strategy at its most extreme. Like all members of the genus, it is hardwired for impermanence: the adults spawn in the soft substrate as the dry season approaches, and when the pool evaporates completely the fish die — leaving behind buried, drought-resistant eggs that lie dormant through months of desiccation, then hatch explosively when the rains return and the pool refills. Described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2004, the species has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN, but its dependence on seasonal wetlands within a landscape undergoing rapid agricultural conversion places it among the many Brazilian annual killies whose long-term security is uncertain.

Taxonomy & naming

Austrolebias nachtigalli was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2004. The authority is placed in parentheses because the species was originally assigned to a genus arrangement that has since been updated under the evolving systematics of the Rivulidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Austrolebias nachtigalli (Costa, 2004), placing it within the species-rich genus Austrolebias — a monophyletic clade of South American annual killifishes within the subfamily Anablepinae of the family Rivulidae.

The genus Austrolebias encompasses several dozen species distributed across Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, predominantly in the seasonal wetlands and temporary pool systems of the Pampa, Chaco, and Atlantic Forest biomes. Within that diversity, A. nachtigalli belongs to the core South American annual killi assemblage characterised by substrate-spawning, desiccation-resistant eggs, and abbreviated adult lifespans.

The specific epithet honours an individual named Nachtigall, following Costa's broader practice in the genus of naming species for collectors, naturalists, or persons associated with the material. No subspecies or recognised population variants are currently listed in the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Austrolebias nachtigalli is a small killifish reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5–2 in, in line with the compact body plans typical of the smaller-bodied members of the genus. The body form follows the Austrolebias ground plan: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and a slightly upturned mouth positioned for surface and water-column feeding.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in virtually all Austrolebias species. Males in breeding condition display the iridescent blue-green, blue-grey, or blue-black body flank patterning characteristic of the genus, with darker margins on the unpaired fins. The exact pattern of spots, bars, or mottling that distinguishes A. nachtigalli from congeners is encoded in the original description. Females are cryptic by comparison — a drab olive-brown or tan, with muted or absent markings — a camouflage adaptation suited to sitting in exposed substrate while spawning, often in very shallow water.

Data on precise meristic counts (fin-ray formulas, scale counts, lateral-line characteristics) derive from the original 2004 description by Costa; secondary sources are sparse for this species.

Habitat

Austrolebias nachtigalli is a Brazilian endemic, occurring in seasonal pools and temporary wetlands associated with the interior of Brazil. The genus as a whole ranges across the drainage basins of the Paraná, Uruguay, São Francisco, and associated coastal systems, and A. nachtigalli is consistent with this broad footprint, though its precise basin and locality information is constrained to the data captured at the time of its description.

The habitat is defined by seasonality. Pools form with the onset of the wet season rains, filling from rainfall and runoff across open grassland, Cerrado, or Atlantic Forest margins. These are typically shallow, sometimes turbid, and often rich in decaying organic matter that softens and acidifies the water. FishBase records a temperature range of 61–75 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5 for the species, with soft to slightly hard water conditions — reflecting the chemistry of rain-fed seasonal pools rather than hard groundwater springs.

As the dry season advances, pools shrink and temperatures may fluctuate more widely. The fish exploit the shrinking water body intensively, spawning in the soft substrate until the pool dries completely. The landscape matrix surrounding these pools is composed of agricultural land across much of the interior of Brazil, making the integrity of individual pool catchments a conservation concern.

Feeding

Austrolebias nachtigalli feeds as a generalist predator in the water column and at the surface, taking whatever invertebrate prey is available in the seasonal pool. Small aquatic insects and their larvae, zooplankton, worms, and small crustaceans form the core of the diet. The upturned mouth and mobile body are well suited to ambush-style feeding on items at or near the surface.

In the aquarium, the species readily accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods: brine shrimp nauplii and adults, Daphnia, bloodworms (chironomid larvae), Tubifex, and similar items. Dry foods may be accepted by some individuals but are not the preferred staple. A varied diet of live and frozen foods in appropriate sizes maintains colour, condition, and spawning readiness.

Mating

Austrolebias nachtigalli follows the substrate-spawning, annual reproductive strategy universal to the genus. As the pool matures through the wet season, males establish small territories and display intensely to females, spreading fins and turning broadside to exhibit their iridescent colouration. Rival males are confronted with similar displays; actual biting and injury are possible in confined spaces.

Courting culminates when the female signals receptivity and the pair swim together toward the substrate. The male positions himself alongside the female and the pair dive headfirst into the soft peat, mud, or detritus layer at the pool bottom. With a sideways flexing embrace, they deposit and fertilise a small batch of eggs — typically a few to a dozen per dive — which are immediately buried by the force of the spawn. The pair surface, rest briefly, and may dive repeatedly over the course of hours or days. There is no pair bond beyond the spawning act and no parental care whatsoever.

Breeding

The buried eggs of Austrolebias nachtigalli are physiologically adapted to survive the complete desiccation of the pool. As the dry season advances and the pool evaporates, the eggs pass through developmental diapause — a state of suspended development that can persist for weeks to months in the dry substrate. The eggs remain viable through the dry season and resume development when rewetted by the returning rains.

In the hobby, this life history is replicated by spawning the fish over a peat moss or coconut coir substrate in a dedicated spawning container, then removing the eggs embedded in the peat, partially drying the peat to reduce moisture without fully desiccating the eggs, and storing it in sealed bags or containers at room temperature for a period of two to four months or longer depending on the species and population. The peat is then re-wetted in a shallow container of soft, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching.

Fry are relatively large at hatching compared with those of non-annual killies and begin feeding immediately on small live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or microworms. Growth is fast — the fish must reach maturity and spawn before the next dry season, compressing an entire life cycle into weeks. Adult fish in the wild rarely survive longer than one season; the hobby typically achieves lifespans of six to twelve months under optimal care. FishBase places the development window from hatching to maturity at approximately four to six weeks.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias nachtigalli is an annual killifish suited to specialist killifish keepers rather than general community aquarists. Its short lifespan, specific spawning requirements, and the need to manage eggs through a dry-storage period make it a commitment-intensive fish, but one that rewards the dedicated keeper with vivid male colouration and fascinating annual life-cycle biology.

A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a breeding pair or small group; a dark substrate and subdued lighting help reduce stress and bring out male colour. Water should be soft to slightly hard, mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), and cool by tropical standards — FishBase records 61–75 °F, making the species suitable for unheated aquaria in temperate climates, particularly in summer. A tight-fitting cover is advisable as killies are capable jumpers.

A layer of peat moss or coconut coir on the bottom, deep enough for the pair to dive into (at least 2 in), doubles as spawning medium. Eggs can be collected periodically by removing and partially drying the peat, then storing it before re-wetting to trigger hatch. Multiple batches of eggs at different storage stages can be managed simultaneously, providing a rolling supply of fry. The species is rarely encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade and is primarily maintained by killifish society members and specialist breeders who exchange eggs and share locality data.

Conservation

Austrolebias nachtigalli has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment does not imply security: the genus Austrolebias contains multiple species formally classified as Critically Endangered or Endangered (including A. wolterstorffi and A. prognathus), and the pressures that threaten those species apply with equal force to A. nachtigalli.

Seasonal pools and temporary wetlands in Brazil are among the most overlooked and underprotected freshwater habitats. Agricultural expansion — driven by soya cultivation and cattle ranching across the Cerrado and adjacent biomes — drains, fills, or degrades these habitats directly. Runoff from adjacent croplands introduces pesticides and fertilisers that alter water chemistry and eliminate the invertebrate prey base. Increasingly erratic rainfall patterns compound the pressure by shortening the wet season and reducing pool depth, compressing the spawning window available to annual killies whose entire reproductive effort depends on the predictability of the annual cycle.

A. nachtigalli is additionally vulnerable by nature of the annual killifish life strategy: the entire adult population dies each dry season, leaving the population's continuity entirely dependent on the buried egg bank. If a pool is drained or severely degraded during the dry period — when the eggs are in diapause and have no means of dispersal — local extinction is immediate and irreversible. Killifish hobbyist societies maintain living ex-situ populations of many Austrolebias species and serve as a genuine conservation backstop for some single-locality endemics; the role of the specialty hobby in preserving genetic material for rare annual killies is documented by groups such as the American Killifish Association.
