Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus marginatus was described by Max Ellis in 1911. It belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Hemigrammus within the family Characidae, the characins — a diverse New World family that encompasses most of the small schooling tetras familiar to aquarists. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Hemigrammus marginatus Ellis, 1911.
The species has been reported across an unusually broad geographic range for a Hemigrammus — São Francisco, Itapicuru, Paraná, Paraguay, Guaporé, Amazon, and Orinoco basins — which suggests it may encompass a complex of similar forms, a question that awaits more detailed systematic revision. For now, all populations are treated as a single valid species under the name marginatus. Its close relative Hemigrammus ribeiroi shares similar caudal-fin pigmentation patterns and occupies overlapping range.
Morphology
Hemigrammus marginatus is a slender, laterally compressed characin reaching approximately 2 in standard length (SL); total length can approach 3 in but most individuals are smaller. The body form follows the typical Hemigrammus plan: a fusiform shape, a rounded snout, large eyes, and a forked caudal fin. Scales are clearly defined and give the flanks a finely reticulated appearance in good light.
The coloration is silvery overall with a faint mid-lateral stripe that may intensify in certain lighting. The most distinctive marking is a dark spot on the caudal fin base, often paired with pale or reddish pigment on the caudal-fin lobes — the pattern that echoes in the closely related H. ribeiroi. The fins are otherwise largely hyaline. Sexual dimorphism is subtle at rest, though females are typically deeper-bodied and more rounded when gravid.
Habitat
Hemigrammus marginatus is a eurytopic species, occurring across a wide range of lowland freshwater environments. The IUCN assessment describes it inhabiting tributaries, main-stem rivers, floodplain lakes, and reservoirs across its range in Brazil and into adjacent Orinoco drainages — an ecological breadth that contributes to its stable population status. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic and tropical, with a temperature range of approximately 68–82 °F.
Across its range the species tolerates soft, acidic blackwater as well as more neutral and moderately hard conditions. Floodplain lake habitats and flooded várzea forest margins are typical, providing the fine-leaved and submerged vegetation, detritus, and insect communities that underpin its omnivorous diet. This habitat versatility — combined with natural resilience to disturbance — is why the species remains broadly distributed despite human alteration of many South American rivers.
Feeding
Hemigrammus marginatus is an omnivore. The IUCN assessment records its natural diet as insects, microcrustaceans, and filamentous algae — a breadth typical of the genus, taking animal prey from the water column and surface while also grazing plant material and periphyton from submerged surfaces.
In the aquarium it accepts most standard small foods: good-quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worms. A varied diet supports condition and keeps the fish active and well-coloured. As with most small characins, feeding small amounts two to three times daily is preferable to a single large meal, and live or frozen food in the diet helps bring fish into breeding condition.
Mating
Hemigrammus marginatus is a typical egg-scattering characin with no parental care. Breeding is concentrated in the rainy season across its natural range — the IUCN assessment notes this seasonality — likely cued by rising water levels, temperature shifts, and the abundance of floodplain habitats that expand dramatically during seasonal floods.
Males court females with lateral displays and parallel swimming. Spawning takes place over fine-leaved plants or among submerged vegetation, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered in small batches. The adults take no interest in the eggs after release. Batch fecundity recorded in Brazilian populations ranges from approximately 239 to 904 oocytes, with a mean near 480 — a moderate output that reflects the species' opportunistic, multi-spawn strategy across the breeding season.
Breeding
In captivity, Hemigrammus marginatus can be conditioned and bred using methods standard for small egg-scattering characins. A small, dim breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop, soft to moderately soft water, and slightly warmer temperatures (around 79–82 °F) should prompt spawning in conditioned pairs or small groups. The eggs are small and may be adhesive to the spawning substrate.
Because the adults will readily eat their own eggs, spawning adults should be removed or eggs transferred to a separate rearing container once spawning activity subsides. The eggs hatch in around 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures; fry become free-swimming a few days later and need very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp and powdered flake. The species is not widely produced commercially, and most aquarium specimens are likely wild-caught or obtained from specialist breeders.
In the aquarium
Hemigrammus marginatus is a peaceful, active schooling fish that suits a community aquarium with other small, non-aggressive species. A group of at least six to eight individuals is recommended to bring out natural schooling behaviour and reduce the wariness that isolated specimens show. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in or larger provides adequate swimming space for an active school.
Water conditions should reflect the tropical lowland habitats the species inhabits: temperature 68–82 °F, pH towards neutral to slightly acidic, and soft to moderately hard water. Good filtration and regular water changes keep the fish healthy; this is not a species that demands exceptional water quality but does best in stable, clean conditions. A planted setup with open midwater swimming space and subdued lighting suits its natural behaviour. Compatible tankmates include other small tetras, dwarf rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Maturity is reached at a small size — FishBase records a maturation length around 0.5 in — suggesting early sexual development and potential ease of breeding relative to larger Hemigrammus species.
Conservation
Hemigrammus marginatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2023 (assessed 2021). The species is endemic to Brazil according to the IUCN assessment, concentrated in the São Francisco basin and northeastern river systems, with populations also present in the Paraná, Paraguay, and Amazonian drainages.
The species' wide distribution, eurytopic habitat use, and natural resilience to disturbance underpin its stable population trend. The IUCN notes it naturally tolerates a range of river and floodplain environments, including modified habitats such as reservoirs. While ongoing threats to South American freshwater systems — including dam construction, water extraction, and land-use change in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes that border the São Francisco basin — may affect local populations, no range-wide decline approaching thresholds for listing as threatened has been documented. No specific conservation measures are in place or considered necessary at this time.
