Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus menezesi was described in 2017 by William Crampton, Cristina Cox Fernandes (de Santana), collaborators Waddell and Lovejoy, as part of a single large revision that split the genus Brachyhypopomus and described fifteen new species at once — a reflection of how much cryptic diversity had been hiding in this group of small, superficially similar knifefish. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. The species epithet honours Naércio Aquino Menezes, a Brazilian ichthyologist. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used for electrolocation in dark or turbid water and for communication with rivals and mates. They swim by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, move backward as readily as forward, and are entirely scaleless. None of this has anything to do with the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which merely share the word "knifefish" by convergent shape and are not related. Within Hypopomidae, B. menezesi is distinguished from close relatives such as B. bombilla and B. regani partly by sharing an unusual paired accessory electric organ in the opercular (gill-cover) region, and by large dark blotches across its dorsal surface.
Morphology
As a bluntnose knifefish, B. menezesi has the soft-bodied, blunt-headed build typical of Brachyhypopomus: a laterally compressed, tapering body without a dorsal fin or a true tail fin, propelled by a long ribbon-like anal fin along the underside. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 4.5 in in males and 4.5 in in females — a genuinely small species even by the modest standards of the genus. The body carries large dark blotches across the back, a pattern used alongside other features to separate it from its closest relatives.
The defining internal feature is electrical rather than visual: like several of its close relatives, B. menezesi possesses a paired accessory electric organ in the opercular region, in addition to the main electric organ running the body length, though the function of this accessory organ remains unclear. The species produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge — a brief, biphasic or nearly biphasic pulse lasting roughly 0.5 to 5 milliseconds, repeated at a rate that varies with activity and social context — rather than the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes. Like all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, with a smooth, sensitive skin covered in electroreceptor pores.
Habitat
The species is known from the middle and upper rio São Francisco basin in Bahia, Brazil, including the rio Sapão — a single major Brazilian river system rather than the wide pan-Amazonian range of many other knifefishes. As a Hypopomidae species it fits the family's general habit: a small, cryptic, nocturnal fish of leaf litter, root tangles and sandy or silted margins in slow to moderate flow, sheltering by day and becoming active after dark.
FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species, meaning it lives and forages near the bottom rather than in open water. Family-wide, Hypopomidae favour warm, soft, often tannin-stained or turbid Neotropical river water, conditions in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight. No specific water-chemistry data (temperature, pH) has been published for this species; its needs are inferred from the family.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been published for Brachyhypopomus menezesi; the cache and literature covering it are silent on stomach contents or direct feeding observations. What is known comes from the family: bluntnose knifefishes are nocturnal, benthic foragers that hunt small invertebrates — worms, aquatic insect larvae and tiny crustaceans — hidden in leaf litter and sediment, locating them chiefly through electrolocation rather than sight in the dark, turbid water they favour.
Given the lack of direct data for this species, any account of its diet should be treated as inference from Hypopomidae generally rather than as established fact for B. menezesi itself.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour has not been documented for B. menezesi specifically — this is a recently described, narrow-range species known mainly from taxonomic and phylogenetic study rather than field behavioural work. What can be said with confidence comes from its pulse-type electric organ discharge, which — as in other Hypopomidae and Gymnotiformes generally — is understood to double as a communication signal: species- and sex-typical pulse shape and repetition rate allow individuals to recognise potential mates and rivals in the dark.
Beyond that electrical signalling, the approach and spawning behaviour of this species is not described in the literature reviewed; data is sparse, in keeping with the family's generally poorly documented reproductive biology.
Breeding
Breeding in Brachyhypopomus menezesi is undocumented. Across Hypopomidae and the related Rhamphichthyidae, where reproduction has been studied at all it typically involves egg-scattering among leaf litter, roots or sand, generally timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward — but this pattern has not been confirmed for B. menezesi itself, and the species has no known history in the aquarium trade to draw on.
For the aquarist or researcher, the honest summary is that breeding biology here is data sparse rather than simply unremarkable: this is a fish described from museum specimens and river surveys, not from tank observation.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus menezesi has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby; it is a recently described, narrow-range Brazilian endemic known from scientific collections rather than the trade. Any care guidance must be extrapolated cautiously from its family. Like all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, which makes it sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications — treatments should be avoided or used at reduced dose. As a small, nocturnal, electroreceptive predator, it would need dim lighting, ample cover (leaf litter, fine sand, roots) to shelter in by day, and tankmates too large to be preyed on and unlikely to nip its sensitive skin or fin.
Given how little is known about this species' husbandry, water chemistry or long-term care, it is not a fish to recommend for the general hobby; it belongs, for now, in the realm of specialist or scientific interest rather than routine aquarium keeping.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus menezesi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. As a species described only in 2017 and known from a comparatively narrow range within the middle and upper rio São Francisco basin of Bahia, Brazil, it fits the profile of a species likely to be assessed as Data Deficient or of conservation concern once formally reviewed, simply for lack of monitoring data.
Narrow-range, single-basin endemics like this one are generally the most exposed members of the knifefish order to habitat degradation — damming, water abstraction, pollution and deforestation along the São Francisco basin are recognised regional pressures — but no population trend or direct threat assessment specific to B. menezesi has been published, so any conservation concern here should be stated as a possibility grounded in its narrow range, not as an established fact.
