Taxonomy & naming
Lacustricola kassenjiensis was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1913, with the type locality given as Kassenji, a settlement on the eastern shore of Lake Albert in what is now northwestern Uganda. The authority is written in parentheses — (Boulenger, 1913) — indicating that the species has been moved from the genus in which Boulenger originally placed it. FishBase, following Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), lists the valid combination as Lacustricola kassenjiensis (Boulenger, 1913); a 1924 redescription by Ahl noted in hobbyist literature does not alter the original authorship.
The genus Lacustricola belongs to the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeye killifishes, which are distributed across sub-Saharan Africa from West Africa through the Congo basin and East African rift-valley drainage systems. Within the lampeyes, Lacustricola includes a number of small, schooling species associated with the great rift lakes and their tributary rivers. The species epithet kassenjiensis is a New Latin adjective meaning 'of Kassenji', formed from the type locality and the standard Latin suffix -ensis denoting geographic origin.
Morphology
Lacustricola kassenjiensis is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum total length of approximately 1.5 in. The body form is characteristic of the lampeye group: streamlined, with a somewhat rounded snout, a dorsally placed and posteriorly set dorsal fin, and a caudal fin that is lightly rounded in females and may show mild extensions in displaying males. The scales are cycloid and moderately large relative to body size.
Colouration in the wild and in captivity is subtle by killifish standards. The body is translucent to pale olive, with a silvery-blue sheen on the flanks and a faintly yellowish or golden cast to the belly region. The diagnostic feature of all lampeyes is present: a vivid iridescent blue-green patch situated immediately above the eye, produced by a specialised light-organ structure beneath the skin. This patch flashes brilliantly under side-lighting and is the source of the group's common name. Sexual dimorphism is mild: males are slightly more intensely coloured and may show more pronounced iridescence, while ripe females are rounder-bodied.
Habitat
The species occupies Lake Albert — the rift lake shared between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo — along with the delta of the Semliki River, which feeds the lake from the south, and the Victoria Nile below Murchison Falls, where the river exits the lake to the north. This places the entire known range within a single interconnected hydrological system at elevations of roughly 2018 ft above sea level.
Lake Albert is a deep, ancient rift lake with relatively hard, alkaline, and well-oxygenated water compared to the soft, acidic conditions typical of West African forest streams. FishBase records environmental parameters at the type locality of approximately pH 7, 77 °F, and 5 dGH hardness — moderately hard, near-neutral conditions consistent with the lake's character as a productive open-water system. Hobbyist experience confirms that the species thrives in moderately hard and alkaline water, and it does not share the preference for soft, acidic blackwater found in many West African forest lampeyes. The fish is characteristically found in open, clear water with good oxygen levels, often in schools near the surface or among marginal vegetation at lake edges and river mouths.
Feeding
Like other small procatopodid killifishes, Lacustricola kassenjiensis is a micro-predator that feeds primarily on small invertebrates. In its native Lake Albert basin, the diet is likely to centre on zooplankton, small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and emerging chironomids taken at or near the water surface — feeding opportunities well matched to the fish's small size and schooling habit in open, shallow water.
In the aquarium, the species adapts readily to small live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro-worms, and finely ground dry foods are all accepted. The small adult size of 1.5 in total length means that even adult specimens require appropriately sized food particles; larger granules or pellets designed for bigger killifishes are unsuitable. Feeding in groups brings out the fish's natural schooling behaviour and reduces the stress-related competition that can afflict isolated individuals.
Mating
Lacustricola kassenjiensis is a non-annual lampeye that spawns continuously in permanent water, rather than depositing diapausing eggs in seasonal pools. The mating system follows the typical procatopodid pattern: males court females with lateral displays that catch the light on their iridescent supraorbital patches, and pairs or small groups move into fine-leaved vegetation or surface root tangles to deposit eggs individually or in small batches.
Hobbyist breeding reports describe a relaxed, extended spawning process in which eggs are scattered among plants over many weeks rather than deposited in a single concentrated event. Males are not strongly aggressive toward one another, and a small group containing multiple males can be maintained without the serious combat seen in annual killifishes during breeding season. The species is not cannibalistic toward its own eggs or fry under typical planted-tank conditions, which distinguishes it from more aggressive killifish groups and makes colony breeding feasible.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions, breeding is straightforward in a well-planted tank with clean, moderately hard, alkaline water. Hobbyist accounts describe a pair maintained in a small 3-gallon (approximately 11-litre) planted tank producing around 15 fry of various sizes simultaneously visible among the adults — the size variation reflecting an extended, asynchronous spawning period rather than a single clutch. The adults showed no aggression toward the fry, allowing colony breeding with minimal intervention.
Eggs are adhesive and are scattered among fine-leaved plants, java moss, or surface floating vegetation over the course of weeks. Incubation takes approximately 10–14 days at the recommended temperature range of 75–81 °F. Newly hatched fry are very small and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria, commercial fry powder, or Paramecium — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. The breeding mode is firmly non-annual: there is no need for peat storage, egg drying, or diapause interruption, and eggs should not be treated as annual eggs. Continuous, colony-style maintenance in a mature planted aquarium is the standard approach for this species.
In the aquarium
Lacustricola kassenjiensis suits a small species or species-community aquarium of 10–15 US gal or more, maintained with clean, well-aerated, moderately hard water at 75–81 °F and near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH. The species benefits from gentle current and good oxygenation, consistent with its origin in the well-oxygenated waters of Lake Albert. A tightly fitting lid is recommended, as small killifishes are capable jumpers.
A group of six or more individuals brings out the schooling behaviour natural to lampeyes in the wild and reduces stress on individuals. The species is peaceful and should not be housed with larger or aggressive tankmates. Well-planted aquaria with floating vegetation, fine-leaved plants, and some open swimming space best replicate natural conditions and also provide spawning sites if colony breeding is desired. The Paraa north collection (hobbyist code UGR 99-5) has been kept in the killifish hobby and represents a documented collection point from the Victoria Nile reach of the basin.
Lacustricola kassenjiensis is not widely available in the mainstream ornamental trade but is maintained by specialist killifish societies and aquarists interested in African lampeyes. Fish obtained through killifish clubs or society fish lists are the most reliable route to this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List lists Lacustricola kassenjiensis as Data Deficient (DD), an assessment that reflects the absence of adequate survey data for the Lake Albert basin rather than a demonstrated absence of threat. Lake Albert and its immediate drainage straddle one of Africa's more politically complex border zones, and systematic freshwater biodiversity surveys of the kind needed to evaluate population trends have not been conducted with sufficient regularity or coverage.
Lake Albert faces mounting pressure from oil and gas extraction in the Albertine Rift — one of the most biodiverse terrestrial and freshwater regions on the continent — as well as from artisanal and commercial fisheries, watershed deforestation increasing sedimentation, and agricultural encroachment on riparian habitats along the Semliki and Nile margins. For a small, restricted-range lampeye whose entire known range falls within a single lake system and its immediate tributaries, any significant degradation of littoral habitat or water quality could represent a meaningful population impact. Reassessment with modern survey data would be needed to determine whether the species meets criteria for a threatened category. In the interim, the Data Deficient listing should not be interpreted as reassurance.
