The spotted lampeye is a small, schooling killifish native to the Ruvu river drainage of eastern Tanzania and neighbouring parts of Kenya — a freshwater fish of clear, permanent streams and river margins that owes its name to the iridescent blue-green sheen above the eye that characterises all lampeyes. Barely exceeding 1.5 in in total length, it is a non-annual species of quiet, well-oxygenated water that spawns continuously among fine plants, depositing a few adhesive eggs at a time rather than producing diapausing eggs buried in seasonal sediment. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2006, reflecting a distribution that spans two East African countries, though the Ruvu basin it calls home is subject to the same slow pressures of deforestation and agricultural encroachment that affect most low-elevation East African streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola maculatus was described by Wolfgang Klausewitz in 1957, and the authority is written in parentheses because the species has since been moved from the genus under which Klausewitz originally placed it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Lacustricola maculatus (Klausewitz, 1957). The genus Lacustricola belongs to the subfamily Procatopodinae within Poeciliidae (as the family is broadly circumscribed in some treatments) or is placed in the family Poeciliidae sensu lato; phylogenetic usage varies, but the procatopodine lampeyes of sub-Saharan Africa are consistently treated as a coherent evolutionary lineage.

The genus name Lacustricola is Latin for 'lake-dweller' (lacus, lake + cola, inhabitant), though many members of the genus frequent streams and river margins rather than standing water. The specific epithet maculatus is Latin for 'spotted', referring to the dark body markings or spot-pattern that helps distinguish this species. In the English-speaking hobby the species is sometimes listed simply as 'spotted lampeye', though no single vernacular name has become universal.

Morphology

Lacustricola maculatus is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the streamlined silhouette typical of the procatopodine lampeyes. FishBase records a maximum total length of 1.5 in, with a common length around 1 in TL — placing it firmly in the micro-fish category. The body profile is fusiform, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle, with the dorsal fin set well back toward the tail in the manner characteristic of its subfamily.

The defining feature shared by all lampeyes is the iridescent patch — a metallic blue-green or blue-white light-reflecting area situated above and behind the pupil. This structure, sometimes described loosely as a 'light organ', is in fact a specialised region of iridophores in the choroid layer of the eye that reflects ambient light with unusual intensity, producing the gleaming spot that gives the group its name and that functions in intraspecific signalling. In Lacustricola maculatus the body itself carries the spot patterning that the specific epithet references — dark speckles or blotches on the flanks against a pale or yellowish-olive ground colour. Habitat

The native range of Lacustricola maculatus is centred on the Ruvu river drainage of eastern Tanzania, with the distribution extending into Kenya according to FishBase. The Ruvu (also known as the Kingani) rises in the Uluguru Mountains and flows east to the Indian Ocean near Dar es Salaam, draining a catchment that includes both montane forest streams and lowland reaches passing through savanna and agricultural zones.

These parameters are consistent with the clear, well-oxygenated water of permanent streams and river margins — not the soft, tannin-stained blackwater of forest leaf-litter pools, and not the hard, alkaline conditions of the East African rift lakes. Like all non-annual lampeyes, Lacustricola maculatus inhabits permanent water bodies where it can reproduce continuously throughout the year rather than racing to complete its life cycle before a seasonal pool dries.

Feeding

Lacustricola maculatus feeds in the manner typical of small procatopodine killifish: an opportunistic micro-predator that takes small invertebrates, zooplankton, and insect larvae near the surface and in the water column. The upturned mouth angle that characterises many lampeyes suits a surface-oriented feeding posture, allowing the fish to pick off small insects and emerging invertebrates at the water film.

In aquarium conditions the species accepts fine-grade dried foods including micro-pellets and high-quality flake, but thrives best when live and frozen foods are offered regularly. Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and other small invertebrates are taken eagerly and promote better colour and breeding condition than dried foods alone. Because of its small size, food particle dimensions matter: items should be matched to the modest gape of a 1 in fish.

Mating

Lacustricola maculatus is a non-annual, continuous-spawning lampeye — the reproductive mode is diametrically opposite to that of the annual killifish of seasonal savanna pools. There are no diapausing eggs, no dry-season dormancy, and no race to reproduce before a pool evaporates. Instead, pairs or small groups spawn on an ongoing basis throughout the year, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or roots over an extended period.

Males court females with lateral displays that present the iridescent eye-patch and body markings to maximum effect, driving alongside the female and nudging her toward suitable plant material. The spawning act itself is brief: the male aligns beside the female, the pair quiver together, and a single egg or a small clutch of eggs is pressed against or among plant fibres. This scatter-a-few-at-a-time strategy is the defining breeding mode of the lampeye group and distributes reproductive effort across time rather than concentrating it in a single mass spawning event.

Breeding

Hobbyist reports collected by killi.co.uk confirm that Lacustricola maculatus can be bred in captivity using spawning mops — bundles of fine yarn or synthetic fibre suspended in the water column that mimic the fine plant roots or vegetation in which lampeyes naturally deposit eggs. Breeders report success at neutral pH (approximately 7.0) and temperatures in the range of 68–73 °F, which sits at the lower end of the range recorded for the species in nature, suggesting the fish tolerates some temperature flexibility. Sex ratios in captive groups are broadly equal.

Eggs adhere lightly to the mop fibres and can be picked out by hand or the mop transferred to a separate rearing vessel. Because the adults will eat eggs and fry if given the opportunity, separation is advisable. Incubation time has not been formally published for this species, but lampeye eggs in similar temperature ranges typically hatch in ten to fourteen days. Fry are small and initially require infusoria or other micro-foods before graduating to baby brine shrimp nauplii. The continuous-spawning strategy means a productive pair will deliver a steady trickle of fry over weeks rather than a single large batch.

In the aquarium

Lacustricola maculatus is kept by specialist killifish hobbyists, particularly those with an interest in African lampeyes, but it does not appear frequently in the general trade. FishBase notes its presence in the commercial aquarium trade alongside its use in local fisheries, suggesting it enters the hobby sporadically rather than as a regularly imported mainstream species.

The species is described as difficult to maintain by FishBase — a characterisation common to many small African lampeyes that require clean, well-oxygenated water, stable parameters, and live or frozen foods to thrive. A well-filtered, planted tank in the 10–15 US gal range is appropriate for a small group; the fish are peaceful schoolers that do best in the company of their own kind or similarly sized, non-aggressive companions. Water quality must be kept high: small body size means lampeyes are sensitive to dissolved waste accumulation. Temperatures of 72–79 °F and a neutral to very slightly acid pH (6.5–7.2) match the parameters recorded for the native habitat.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Lacustricola maculatus as Least Concern in January 2006, with the assessment reflecting the species' presence across two East African countries — Tanzania and Kenya — and a distribution spanning the Ruvu drainage and associated waters rather than a single restricted locality. Unlike many killifish that are single-spring or single-pool endemics facing acute extinction risk, this lampeye occupies a broader river system, which provides some buffer against localised disturbance.

Nevertheless, the pressures bearing on low-elevation East African streams are real and ongoing. The Ruvu basin has experienced deforestation in its upper reaches, agricultural conversion of riparian zones, and increasing water abstraction from the river system that supplies Dar es Salaam. These changes affect water clarity, flow regime, and sediment load — conditions that matter for a clear-water lampeye. The 2006 IUCN assessment predates nearly two decades of subsequent land-use change in the region, and a reassessment with updated distribution and population data would give a more current picture of how the species is faring across its range.
