The Ruaha lampeye is a diminutive non-annual killifish endemic to a single river system in the Tanzanian highlands — the Little Ruaha drainage in the Sao Hills southwest of Iringa. Reaching barely 1.5 in, it is a schooling lampeye of cool, extremely soft, clear upland streams and swampy seepages, named for the iridescent blue-green light organ that arcs above each eye. Its restricted single-drainage range and the ongoing pressures on highland Tanzanian freshwater habitats have earned it a Vulnerable assessment on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola omoculatus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Rudolf Wildekamp in 1977, with the type locality given as a small brook west of Ifunda village in the Sao Hills, draining into the Little Ruaha River in south-central Tanzania. The species has historically appeared in the literature and trade under the senior synonym Aplocheilichthys omoculatus, a placement within a broadly conceived Aplocheilichthys that has since been split into several genera; SHOAL's priority fish list retains the Aplocheilichthys combination as an alternative name (SHOAL FishBase taxon ID 61285), but the current Catalog of Fishes treatment places it in Lacustricola.

The genus Lacustricola is a group of small, non-annual lampeye killifish distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, occupying freshwater systems from coastal rivers and arid savanna streams to highland drainage basins. A 2020 taxonomic review by Bragança and colleagues (ZooKeys) examined southern African Lacustricola diversity, confirming the genus as oviparous egg-layers whose mode of reproduction — continuous spawning of adhesive eggs in permanent water — sets them clearly apart from the diapausing annual killifish of the same continent.

The specific epithet omoculatus derives from the Latin omus (shoulder) and oculatus (eyed), a reference to the conspicuous iridescent light-organ patch above the eye — the defining character of lampeyes generally, and particularly striking in this species.

Morphology

Lacustricola omoculatus is a slender, torpedo-shaped killifish with a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in (FishBase). The body is laterally compressed and relatively elongate, typical of the lampeye guild. As in all lampeyes, the most immediately striking feature is the supraocular photophore — a crescent or wedge of blue-green iridescent tissue positioned just above the eye, which catches and reflects light to produce the glittering 'lamp' effect that gives the group its common name and makes small schools of these fish conspicuous even in dim, tannic water.

Base colouration is typically a translucent olive-straw on the flanks, becoming paler on the belly. Males develop stronger iridescence along the flank scales in spawning condition and may show intensified colour in the caudal and dorsal fins. Females are plainer, more uniformly coloured, and round-bodied when gravid. The fins are rounded rather than pointed, consistent with the lampeye body plan.

Habitat

This species is known only from the Little Ruaha River drainage in the Sao Hills of south-central Tanzania — a highland area whose streams drain into the Great Ruaha River system. iNaturalist records characterise the natural habitats as swampy areas with outflowing creeks, and FishBase places it in permanent freshwater, consistent with its non-annual reproductive strategy.

Water conditions in the Sao Hills streams are cool and extremely soft: FishBase records a temperature range of 61–72 °F, pH 6.3–7.2, and hardness of 0–1 dH — far softer than most Tanzanian rift-lake environs. The highland elevation keeps temperatures well below those of lowland East African killifish habitats. These cool, oligotrophic conditions — clear water, abundant riparian vegetation, submerged root tangles — are typical lampeye habitat, providing spawning sites among plant stems and fine roots as well as zooplankton food resources.

Feeding

Like other small lampeyes, Lacustricola omoculatus is a micro-predator of zooplankton and small invertebrates. Its upturned, small mouth and streamlined body are adapted for surface- and midwater feeding on insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar prey in the water column and at the surface film. In the clear, soft highland streams it inhabits, the primary food resources are likely chironomid larvae, copepods, small cladocerans, and emerging aquatic insects.

No specific dietary study for this species is available in the literature. In aquarium conditions, lampeyes in general accept live and frozen small invertebrates readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and similar foods maintain condition and colour well. Very small dry foods formulated for nano or micro fish may also be accepted.

Mating

Lacustricola omoculatus is a non-annual killifish: it does not produce diapausing eggs and is not tied to the seasonal boom-and-bust cycle of ephemeral pools. Instead, it is a continuous spawner of permanent water, a reproductive strategy shared across the Lacustricola genus and confirmed for the group by Bragança et al. (2020). Spawning in lampeyes is a protracted, low-intensity process — pairs or small groups deposit only a few eggs at a time over extended periods rather than releasing a single mass clutch.

Male courtship in lampeyes typically involves lateral displays that maximise visibility of the iridescent supraocular photophore and any flank iridescence: the male positions himself beside and slightly below the female, flaring fins and angling the body to catch light. This display is brief before the pair align and deposit eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, or other fine structure.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and are deposited singly or in small numbers among fine aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and similar structure at the water's edge or among marginal vegetation — the typical lampeye spawning strategy documented for Lacustricola and its relatives. No diapause occurs; eggs develop continuously and hatch in one to two weeks depending on water temperature, with the cool highland conditions of this species' native range likely extending incubation relative to lowland lampeyes.

Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial micro-fry powders are suitable initially, with graduation to Artemia nauplii once the fry are large enough. FishBase notes that L. omoculatus is difficult to maintain in the aquarium, implying that its cool, very soft water requirements may be challenging to replicate and sustain outside its native range. Adults do not guard eggs or fry; because spawning is continuous rather than mass-event, separating all eggs from adults is impractical, but a well-planted aquarium with refuges for fry can sustain a self-reproducing colony.

In the aquarium

Lacustricola omoculatus is rarely encountered in the hobby, and FishBase specifically flags it as difficult to maintain — a warning that should be taken seriously. Its requirements depart significantly from those of the common aquarium trade lampeyes: the native habitat is cool (61–72 °F), extremely soft (0–1 dH), and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.3–7.2). Without access to appropriately soft, cool water, the species is unlikely to thrive or reproduce.

For those able to meet its needs, a species aquarium or a setup with other highland East African micro-fish of similar requirements is appropriate. The tank should be well-planted with fine-leaved vegetation and surface cover, with gentle filtration that avoids strong currents — lampeyes are weak swimmers that prefer still or very slow-moving water. Because schooling species are more confident and display better in groups, a minimum of eight to ten individuals is recommended. Live and frozen small invertebrates (Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro-worms) should form the core of the diet.

The species' very restricted natural range and its rarity in the aquarium trade mean that captive-bred stock is seldom available commercially. Dedicated killifish societies such as the American Killifish Association maintain studbook data and may connect hobbyists with breeders holding this species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lacustricola omoculatus as Vulnerable (VU), a status confirmed by FishBase, iNaturalist, and the SHOAL Conservation Priority Fishes list. Earlier assessments had classified the species as Data Deficient; the upgrade to Vulnerable reflects the narrow endemic nature of a fish known from a single drainage — the Little Ruaha system in the Sao Hills of Tanzania — and the documented threats to highland freshwater habitats in the region.

The Ruaha basin faces significant pressures: agricultural water extraction from the Great Ruaha system has reduced dry-season flows dramatically over recent decades, a well-documented problem that affects both downstream river health and highland tributary systems. Deforestation of the Sao Hills catchment threatens water quality and the streambank vegetation cover that lampeyes depend on for spawning and refuge. Additionally, introduced species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) and Nile tilapia — have degraded native freshwater fish communities across East Africa, and highland streams are not immune.

Given that no other populations of L. omoculatus are known outside the type-locality drainage, any further degradation of the Little Ruaha headwaters poses a direct extinction risk. The species is included in SHOAL's priority freshwater fish list, and its captive presence in dedicated killifish collections, however limited, provides a small insurance population.
