Taxonomy & naming
Lacustricola usanguensis was described by Lothar Seegers in 1996, and the authority is therefore presented in parentheses indicating the species has been reassigned since first description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid name as Lacustricola usanguensis (Seegers, 1996). The genus Lacustricola belongs to the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeyes — a radiation of small, schooling cyprinodontiform fishes characterised by the iridescent light-organ patch above the eye that gives the group its name.
The species epithet usanguensis is a Latin toponym meaning 'from Usangu', referring directly to the Usangu Flats, the type locality and the only area from which the species has been recorded. The Usangu Flats lie in the upper catchment of the Great Ruaha River system in southwestern Tanzania, within the eastern arm of the East African Rift. This strict locality endemism is a recurring trait in the Lacustricola genus, and it is precisely what makes the species vulnerable to any degradation of its single known drainage.
Morphology
Lacustricola usanguensis is a miniature, slender-bodied lampeye, with a maximum recorded total length of 1 in (FishBase). Like all procatopodid lampeyes, it displays the defining character of the group: a conspicuous iridescent blue-green photophore-like patch above the eye, produced by specialised reflective cells rather than true bioluminescence. This luminous mark is visible at close range and becomes especially striking when the fish schools in shallow, lit water.
The body form is typical of the genus — laterally compressed, with a relatively large eye set high on the head, a subterminal mouth angled slightly upward to facilitate surface feeding, and a smoothly contoured dorsal profile. Colouration in life is pale to silvery-olive on the flanks, often with faint iridescent scales. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle; males typically show slightly more intense colouration and the characteristic lampeye patch may be more vivid than in females.
Habitat
The species is restricted to the Usangu Flats and the upper Little Ruaha river drainage in southwestern Tanzania — permanent swamps, slow-flowing streams, and marsh-edge brooks within a seasonally flooded wetland system. FishBase categorises it as a non-seasonal killifish of permanent water, distinguishing it clearly from the annual killifish that colonise temporary pools and depend on diapausing eggs to survive dry seasons. The Usangu wetland complex is a groundwater-fed system, and these permanent water bodies provide the stable base habitats that lampeyes require year-round.
Water chemistry within the drainage aligns with the East African Rift environment: FishBase records a pH of 6.5–7.2 and temperatures of 63–72 °F, reflecting the relatively high-altitude, cool character of the upper Ruaha headwaters. These are clear, oxygenated waters with aquatic vegetation and submerged roots providing both spawning substrate and cover — the structural setting typical of procatopodid lampeye habitats across the continent.
Feeding
Lacustricola usanguensis feeds in the manner typical of procatopodid lampeyes: a surface-oriented, opportunistic micro-predator taking small invertebrates — insects and their larvae, zooplankton, and small aquatic invertebrates — from the water column and surface film. The upturned mouth is well suited to intercepting prey at or just below the surface. In schooling formation, the fish can exploit patchy invertebrate concentrations efficiently.
In the aquarium, the species readily accepts suitably small live and frozen foods — micro-worm, Artemia nauplii, daphnia, and similar items — as well as high-quality micro-pellets and crushed flake. Feeding at or near the surface is preferred, and foods that sink quickly may be ignored. Multiple small meals per day suit the species' continuous foraging style better than a single large feed.
Mating
Lacustricola usanguensis is a non-annual, continuous spawner in the lampeye tradition. Rather than concentrating reproduction into a single seasonal pulse, the species breeds throughout the year when conditions are favourable — a strategy well suited to the permanent, stable waters of the Usangu swamp system. Males court females persistently within the school; courtship consists of lateral displays in which the male angles toward the female and extends his fins to present the lampeye patch and fin colouration at their most visible.
Spawning is pair-based and adhesive: the male aligns alongside the female and a single egg, or a small number of eggs, is fertilised and pressed onto a fine-leaved plant, submerged root, or other delicate substrate. The pair may spawn repeatedly through a session, depositing a modest number of eggs across multiple sites rather than releasing a large clutch at once. This scatter-and-adhere strategy disperses reproductive risk across time and space, protecting against localised predation events.
Breeding
Breeding parameters for congeners offer the closest reference point for Lacustricola usanguensis in the aquarium. A well-planted spawning tank with fine-leaved plants such as java moss, hornwort, or spawning mops provides the adhesive substrate the eggs require. Water conditions matching the species' native range — pH 6.5–7.2, temperature 66–72 °F — should be maintained; the species is from a relatively cool, high-altitude drainage and does not require tropical warmth. Gentle filtration through a sponge filter avoids drawing eggs or fry into an impeller.
Adhesive eggs take approximately 10–14 days to hatch at cooler temperatures, longer than many tropical killifish. The newly hatched fry are small and require infusoria or commercial fry food of an appropriate particle size before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Adults do not show intensive egg-predation behaviour compared to annual killifish, but removing the spawning mop or plants to a separate hatching vessel is still the most reliable approach. Because adults spawn continuously, a fresh mop placed every few days and moved to a rearing vessel creates a steady supply of fry at different developmental stages.
In the aquarium
Lacustricola usanguensis is an undemanding but delicate species best suited to a specialist killifish or nano-fish setup. A small, heavily planted aquarium of 10–15 US gal is ample for a school; dense vegetation replicates the swamp-edge structure of the native habitat and gives the fish the security they need to display and spawn. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as small lampeyes can clear the water surface.
Water conditions should reflect the relatively cool, near-neutral chemistry of the upper Little Ruaha system: pH 6.5–7.2, temperature 66–72 °F, and moderate hardness. The species is described by FishBase as not difficult to maintain, and an experienced fishkeeper familiar with small killifish will find it cooperative. It should be kept with similarly sized, peaceful species that will not outcompete it at the surface; other small lampeyes, small tetras, or Microdevario species make compatible tankmates. Its small adult size and the rarity of the species in the hobby mean it is predominantly a specialist fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Lacustricola usanguensis as Vulnerable (VU) in January 2006 under criterion D2, reflecting an extremely restricted area of occupancy that could push the species toward extinction rapidly if any qualifying threat were to materialise. The assessment records the Usangu Flats and the upper Little Ruaha drainage in southwestern Tanzania as the only known area of occurrence — a single wetland system with no other confirmed populations to act as a refuge.
The Usangu Flats wetland has faced significant pressure from large-scale irrigation abstraction, primarily for rice cultivation, which reduced dry-season inflows into the Great Ruaha River substantially from the 1990s onward. Permanent swamps that lampeyes depend on can contract or disappear when water is diverted upstream, leaving fish with no dry-season refuge. Deforestation within the catchment increases run-off variability and sediment loads, degrading the clear, structured habitat the species requires. The introduction of non-native fishes — mosquitofish (Gambusia) and tilapia — into East African freshwaters represents an additional predation and competition pressure on small endemics.
Given its single-basin restriction, any deterioration of the Usangu wetland complex poses an existential risk to this species. Improved management of water abstraction, enforcement of catchment forest protection, and targeted surveys to establish whether additional populations exist outside the known range are the most important conservation measures for Lacustricola usanguensis.
