Nothobranchius elongatus is a small annual killifish native to the coastal lowlands of south-east Kenya, where it is known only from seasonal floodplain pools in the Manjema and Kombeni river drainages. Like every member of the genus, it races through its entire life cycle — hatching, growing, spawning, and dying — before its shallow, rain-fed pools evaporate each dry season, leaving the next generation sealed inside drought-resistant eggs buried in the mud. Described by Wildekamp in 1982, it remains a specialist's fish in the aquarium hobby and is assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with its single-county range and dependence on temporary wetland habitat making it acutely sensitive to land-use change.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius elongatus was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Rudolf Wildekamp in 1982, with the type locality fixed at approximately 3.883°S, 39.733°E in the coastal lowland region of south-east Kenya, near the Tanzania–Kenya border. The species is placed in the genus Nothobranchius — the largest and most studied genus of African annual killifishes — within the family Nothobranchiidae (formerly grouped within Aplocheilidae). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name as Nothobranchius elongatus Wildekamp, 1982.

The specific epithet elongatus is Latin for 'elongated', referring to the relatively slender body form that distinguishes this species from the more deep-bodied members of the genus. The genus name Nothobranchius derives from the Greek nothos (false or spurious) and branchia (gills), a reference that early workers applied to the modified gill apparatus characteristic of the group, though the full biological meaning of the compound in this context has been debated.

Morphology

Nothobranchius elongatus reaches a maximum total length of approximately 2.5 in (FishBase), making it a mid-sized representative of the genus — compact enough for small specialist tanks but noticeably slimmer in profile than the stockier N. rachovii or N. furzeri that are more commonly pictured in hobby literature. The body form that gives the species its name is visible in adult males: the flanks are elongated and less deep-bellied than in many congeners, contributing to a somewhat streamlined silhouette.

As with all Nothobranchius, males are conspicuously more colourful than females. Males display iridescent scaling on the flanks with a pattern of scales edged in contrasting colours; specific colouration varies with collection locality. Females are cryptically brownish with few markings, a typical pattern in annual killies where females must survive inconspicuously in shallow, exposed pools long enough to spawn. The caudal fin of males may show banding or lyrate extension. Sexual dimorphism is strong and immediately apparent: female drabness versus male spectacle is the rule in Nothobranchius.

Habitat

Nothobranchius elongatus occupies temporary, seasonal pools and floodplain swamps in the coastal lowlands of south-east Kenya, with the type locality in the Manjema and Kombeni river drainages. These habitats are shallow, warm, and highly seasonal: they fill with the rains, persist for weeks to a few months, and then dry completely. The substrate is typically soft mud, peat, and detritus — the medium into which spawning pairs deposit their eggs and into which the eggs must retreat to survive the dry season.

Water temperatures in the pools the species inhabits run broadly in the tropical range, and FishBase records 75–82 °F as the thermal envelope for the species in the aquarium. The pools are often turbid, sun-warmed, and carry moderate dissolved organic material from decomposing vegetation, giving the water a soft, slightly acidic to neutral character typical of seasonal savanna floodplain habitats along the East African coastal strip. The species shares this wetland type with other coastal Kenyan Nothobranchius but is restricted to a very small geographic range, which is the principal reason for its threatened status.

Feeding

Nothobranchius elongatus is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, feeding primarily on small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates available in the seasonal pools it inhabits. The short lifespan of an annual killi drives rapid growth, and feeding is accordingly intense from the moment the fish hatches — young fish must grow to sexual maturity within weeks.

In captivity the species accepts a variety of live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: daphnia, artemia nauplii, frozen bloodworm, tubifex, and grindal worm are all suitable. A varied diet maintains colour and condition in males. Dry prepared foods are generally accepted once the fish is established. Overfeeding in the small tanks often used for specialist killifish breeding should be avoided, as water quality degradation in a confined space shortens the already brief lifespan.

Mating

Nothobranchius elongatus is a substrate-diving annual killifish, and its mating behaviour is centred entirely on the act of depositing diapausing eggs deep into the soft muddy substrate of its temporary pools. When a female is receptive, the male courts her with lateral displays — presenting his flanks to show colouration — and drives her toward the pool bottom. The pair then plunge together, partially or fully burying themselves in the soft substrate, while the female releases a single egg that is fertilised as it is pressed into the peat or mud.

This substrate-spawning embrace is repeated many times over successive days. Each dive produces one egg; a productive pair may deposit many eggs per session across multiple bouts. The eggs are large relative to the female's body, hard-shelled, and designed to survive burial in dry substrate for months. The mating system involves no pair bond: fish spawn opportunistically, and in the wild multiple individuals share the same pool.

Breeding

The breeding biology of Nothobranchius elongatus is defined by diapause — the capacity of the buried egg to arrest development and withstand total desiccation of the surrounding substrate. After spawning, the adults die as the pool dries and water becomes unliveable. The eggs remain sealed in the dry mud through the rainless season — a period that in the coastal lowlands of south-east Kenya can last several months — in a state of suspended development. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs hatch rapidly, and the new generation must complete its entire life cycle before the next dry season ends the pool again.

In the aquarium, this biology is replicated using a peat-spawning setup. A container of moist peat or coconut coir is placed on the tank bottom; the pair spawns into it over several weeks. The peat is then removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag or container, and stored in darkness at room temperature (typically 72–79 °F) for two to four months — the incubation window FishBase records for the species. After the resting period, the peat is tipped into warm, shallow water and fry emerge within hours to a few days. First foods are infusoria or commercial micro-fry food, followed quickly by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Fry grow fast and reach sexual maturity in as little as six to eight weeks.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius elongatus is assessed as difficult to maintain in the aquarium (FishBase), a rating that reflects not aggression or disease susceptibility but the specialist knowledge required for annual killifish keeping. The fish is inherently short-lived — even under ideal conditions it will not survive much more than a year — and the keeper's focus is less on longevity than on completing successful spawning cycles and banking eggs. For hobbyists already familiar with annual killifish keeping, the species is a rewarding subject; for those new to the group, it is advisable to start with a more forgiving annual killi before attempting this species.

The practical setup is straightforward: a small, covered tank of 10–15 US gal, soft to moderately hard water kept at 75–82 °F, a peat or coir spawning medium, and a diet of live and frozen invertebrates. Males can be aggressive toward one another and may also harass females relentlessly; keeping one male with two or three females reduces stress on any individual female. The American Killifish Association and specialist groups such as the Nothobranchius Maintenance Group document the species' requirements and hold fish-of-the-month events that help circulate strains among keepers. Because the wild range is very restricted, captive populations maintained by killifish societies provide an important ex-situ presence for the species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nothobranchius elongatus as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii) in an assessment dated 31 October 2018 (published 2019; assessed by Nagy, B. and Watters, B.). The B1 criterion flags a restricted range of extent of occurrence, and the ab(iii) qualifier indicates that the area and quality of its habitat are declining. The species is known from a narrow coastal strip in south-east Kenya, limited to the Manjema and Kombeni river floodplains — a single-county range that makes it intrinsically vulnerable to any local environmental change.

The principal threats are habitat loss and the alteration of seasonal water regimes. Drainage for agriculture and development, abstraction for irrigation, and changes in land cover that affect the timing and depth of seasonal flooding all reduce the availability and quality of the temporary pools on which the species depends. Introduced species, particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.), which have been widely released across East Africa for mosquito control, are an additional pressure in seasonal pool habitats, where they compete with and predate native annual killifish. Captive populations maintained by killifish hobbyist organisations represent a meaningful conservation buffer and have historically preserved strains of Nothobranchius species that subsequently became difficult or impossible to collect in the wild.
