Nothobranchius microlepis is a small East African annual killifish described by Lothar Seegers in 1985 from seasonal pools in Tanzania. Like all members of its genus, it completes its entire life cycle within the span of a single wet season — hatching when the rains refill ephemeral pools, maturing quickly, spawning into the soft substrate, and dying as the pools evaporate, leaving behind drought-resistant eggs buried in the mud. Those eggs pass the long dry season in a state of arrested development, awakening only when rains return months later. Males carry the vivid reds and blues characteristic of the genus; females are smaller and cryptically coloured. The species occupies soft, acidic, tannin-stained water and is maintained in the killifish hobby primarily through the traditional peat-spawning and egg-storage method that replicates the natural diapause cycle.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius microlepis was described by the German ichthyologist Lothar Seegers in 1985. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the name as valid, placing the species in the genus Nothobranchius within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African annual killifishes. The genus Nothobranchius is the most speciose group of African annual killies and is centred on the seasonal pools of East and southern Africa, from the Nile delta region south through Tanzania, Mozambique, and Zambia.

The specific epithet microlepis is derived from the Greek mikros (small) and lepis (scale), describing the small or fine scales that distinguish this species from close relatives within the genus. Seegers was a prolific describer of East African killifishes and his 1985 contributions expanded knowledge of the Tanzanian Nothobranchius fauna considerably. The authority is cited without parentheses, as the species has remained in Nothobranchius since its original description.

Within the genus, N. microlepis belongs to a radiation of small to medium-sized annual killies that are endemic to Tanzania and the surrounding region. Taxonomic work on Nothobranchius continues; molecular phylogenetics has clarified species boundaries within the genus over recent decades, and the standing of N. microlepis as a distinct species is supported by both morphological and geographic data. The name Nothobranchius microlepidotus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Nothobranchius microlepis is a small killifish, reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1.5–2 in, with males attaining the upper end of that range and females remaining somewhat smaller. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded caudal fin and an upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding on small invertebrates.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as it is throughout Nothobranchius. Males are conspicuously coloured — the flanks carry bright iridescent pigmentation, typically incorporating reds, oranges, and blues in patterns that vary among populations and localities. The fins are coloured and often patterned, and the overall effect is one of the more striking displays among small African fishes. Females are uniformly drab — brownish or olive-grey with little patterning — an adaptation that reduces predation risk during the period when males are actively displaying.

The scales, as the name implies, are relatively fine or small for a fish of this size — a character that assists in distinguishing N. microlepis from related Tanzanian congeners. The eyes are large relative to head size, and the lateral line is incomplete, as is typical for the family.

Habitat

Nothobranchius microlepis is native to seasonal pools in Tanzania, East Africa. Like all members of the genus, it inhabits ephemeral or semi-permanent bodies of water — grassland and savanna pools, shallow pans, and floodplain depressions that fill during the wet season and contract or disappear entirely in the dry season. These habitats are characterised by soft, acidic to slightly acidic water that is often stained with tannins from decomposing leaf litter and peat.

Water conditions in the hobby are guided by the Seriously Fish parameters for the species and related Nothobranchius: temperature 64–75 °F, pH 5.5–6.5, and low hardness (2–6 dGH). The water is typically warm during the active wet season but cools as pools age into the dry season, and annual killifish generally tolerate a somewhat wider thermal range than their optimal suggests. In the wild the pools are shallow, exposed to high light levels, and heavily vegetated with emergent and floating vegetation along their margins.

The East African savanna habitat faces mounting pressure from agricultural expansion, drainage, and climate-driven shifts in rainfall patterns. Seasonal pools are among the most threatened freshwater habitats on the continent because they are not mapped as rivers or permanent lakes and are routinely drained, ploughed, or modified without ecological assessment.

Feeding

In the wild, Nothobranchius microlepis feeds on the small invertebrates that colonise seasonal pools rapidly after filling: mosquito larvae, small crustaceans (copepods, cladocerans), chironomid larvae, and other aquatic insects. The upturned mouth and mobile body are suited to hunting near the surface and in the water column rather than on the substrate. Diet flexibility is important in an environment where prey communities change rapidly through the wet season as the pool matures.

In the aquarium, N. microlepis and other small Nothobranchius species accept a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods without difficulty. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small tubifex are all suitable. Dry foods may be accepted but live and frozen foods produce better condition and colouration, and support natural feeding behaviour. Because the fish is small and has a relatively small mouth, food particle size should be matched to the fish's gape — oversized foods are refused or wasted.

Mating

Nothobranchius microlepis is a substrate-spawning annual killifish. Males compete intensely for access to females through colourful lateral displays that show off the bright flanks and fins to maximum effect. These displays involve circling, fin-spreading, and occasional brief physical contact between rival males; dominant males establish loose territories around favoured spawning substrates.

Courting pairs engage in a spawning drive in which the male positions himself alongside the female and the two fish press together and plunge into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — simultaneously releasing eggs and sperm. Each spawning act deposits one or a small number of eggs, buried in the substrate where they are protected from desiccation and predation. The sequence is repeated many times over the course of the wet season, with a single pair capable of producing dozens to hundreds of eggs across multiple spawning events. There is no pair bond and no parental care — after spawning the adults resume independent foraging and display activity.

Breeding

The breeding biology of N. microlepis follows the defining annual killifish pattern: eggs are buried in the substrate and undergo embryonic diapause — a phase of arrested development — that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of their habitat during the dry season. The eggs remain viable in dry or damp peat for months, resuming development only when re-wetted by the return of seasonal rains. This diapause mechanism involves three distinct developmental arrest points (DI, DII, DIII) identified in Nothobranchius species generally; eggs may pass through one or more of these phases depending on environmental conditions.

In the aquarium, spawning is induced by providing a deep layer of peat moss or coconut coir as a substrate into which the pair will dive to deposit eggs. After 4–8 weeks of spawning, the substrate is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess moisture, sealed in a plastic bag or container with a small amount of air, and stored in a warm location (typically 72–79 °F) for a drying period of 4–8 weeks before re-wetting. When the peat is re-wetted with soft, aged water, fry hatch within 24–48 hours and are immediately free-swimming and able to take micro-foods.

Fry are small at hatch and require appropriately fine first foods — infusoria, commercially produced fry powders, or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii — before graduating to larger foods. Growth is rapid: N. microlepis, like most small Nothobranchius, can reach sexual maturity in 6–8 weeks under good conditions. Wild fish complete their entire life cycle within a single wet season of roughly 6–9 months, and captive individuals are similarly short-lived, typically surviving 1–2 years at most.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius microlepis is a manageable species for killifish enthusiasts familiar with the annual group's husbandry requirements. A small tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or trio; a dark substrate and floating cover plants (Indian fern, Salvinia) reduce stress, intensify male colouration, and keep the fish calm. A tight-fitting lid is necessary — killifish jump readily. Filtration should be gentle, as strong current is not typical of the still seasonal pools the fish inhabit.

Water should be soft (2–6 dGH) and slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5) at a temperature of 68–75 °F. Regular small water changes with pre-conditioned soft water maintain water quality without stressing the fish with sudden parameter shifts. Because wild fish often experience seasonal cooling, a slightly wider temperature range is tolerated, but sustained temperatures above 79 °F shorten lifespans and reduce spawning success.

N. microlepis is not suited to a community aquarium: it is small, easily stressed by larger tankmates, and males in good condition may be aggressive toward each other. A species tank or pairing with very small, non-competitive dither fish of similar water requirements is the most practical approach. The peat-spawning workflow is the central husbandry task and the species should not be kept without the infrastructure to collect and store eggs — without it the line will be lost when the adults die.

Conservation

Nothobranchius microlepis carries an IUCN status of Not Evaluated (NE), meaning no formal Red List assessment has been completed for the species. This is not unusual among the smaller or more recently described Nothobranchius species — the genus is large and assessment resources are limited — but the absence of an evaluation should not be read as an indication of security. The seasonal pool habitats of Tanzania that N. microlepis depends on are among the most fragile and least protected freshwater environments on the continent.

The threats facing Tanzanian Nothobranchius habitats are well documented across the genus: conversion of seasonal grassland and floodplain habitats to agriculture, drainage of ephemeral pools, introduction of invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia species), and the intensification of dry-season water abstraction. Any species restricted to a small number of localities in a single drainage is inherently vulnerable to local extinction if those pools are drained or destroyed. For single-pool or single-basin endemics, the window between first description and local extinction can be shorter than the time required to complete a Red List assessment.

The killifish hobby plays a direct conservation role for species like N. microlepis. Active hobbyist strains maintained through the annual peat-spawning cycle constitute the only living ex-situ population for many obscure Nothobranchius species. Maintaining clean, well-documented strains with accurate locality data and sharing them through killifish associations preserves options that may eventually matter for recovery efforts.
